what Mozart did here is amazing. He was already a master of polyphony…but he added counterpoint in such a tasteful way. Pure genius.

I loved watching the 1st violinist’s bow arm, the way he used so little bow and played so clearly (last movement). They all played beautifully; it’s just that the 1st violinist’s arm could be seen so well. What a tight, cohesive group of performers.

Agree with the bow technique of the 1st fiolin. Excellent sense of the chord motion and grasp. And the sound is there. Almost a model.

Agreed. I do hate when a panning or zooming cameraperson tries to impose his/her/its idea of what we should watch.

An excellent performance of a "myriad minded" work. The combination of resignation and questioning subdued anger in the 2nd movement was very skillfully brought to life for me. Bravo!

Great performance with one of the finest string quartets around today. The dynamics and timing are so carefully thought out!

Mozart the super genius of Salzburg after a talk with "late" (aging) Beethoven! Total genius! Superb string quintet playing by the wonderful performers: BRAVI TUTTI! (what a cello part by Mozart, wonderfully played by Carol Ou!). Let's take note of these wonderful players: (I hope they play together many more times!): Carpe Diem String Quartet ( Charles Wetherbee, Amy Galluzzo violins; Korine fujiwara - and the olther violist, JAMES BUSWELL? - viola; Carol Ou, cello)

Charles Rosen demansrtated that the entire qurtet was built on a cycle of thirds. This explains the unity that can bre perceived in this work. The rendering is a masterwork.

Much is made of Mozart's 'Haydn' Quartets, and rightly so. Well, this Quintet and the last one, K614, are surely Mozart's 'Haydn' Quintets. Both are full of wit and great artistry.

Look it up, 95% of everything Mozart wrote AFTER his father died is a masterpiece or close. He got more serious after he died. That was a major turning point in his life.
@LachlanTyrrell2003

shame Mozart had to die so early. Perhaps one of the greatest shames in history. He was just getting started...
@gprengel
@gprengel Год назад
why AFTER his father died (1787) ? I would say 95% of all he did since he went to Paris and his mother died around 1778 were masterpieces!
@justinnoble6506
@justinnoble6506 Год назад
yes his father was a pedagogue… never let his real talent shine. Wolfie by today’s standards would be a jazz piano player…pushing the limits of composition and improvisation. And can you imagine the operas and musicals he would have written?

This is not a bad rendition, the only thing that bothers me, and in many other recordings of quartets in quintets in general, that the first violin is to prominant and push the rest to the backround, and thus it becomes often like a miniature violin concerto...

@michaels7889

This often caused by the recording technician, here apparently not since there are probably only two microphones, but I think here cello and viola are well able to hold their own when needed. It also depends on how one listens. Headphones absolutely necessary for lower frequencies!

Man..I hear at least one Beethoven "melody" he stole from every Mozart piece. Yea I know, Beethoven didnt write Melodies, but Motif designs. But even though he revolutionized what he did with Motifs, you can hear his strong Mozart influence. And Haydn a little.
@LachlanTyrrell2003
@LachlanTyrrell2003 4 года назад
Yes, Beethoven borrowed a lot from Mozart. However, I like to use the analogy that Mozart planted the seeds and Beethoven grew the forest.
@beethovenlovedmozart
@beethovenlovedmozart 4 года назад
@@LachlanTyrrell2003 read the story on how Johannes Brahms felt later in life about Beethoven. He thought people were so caught up in the newness of some of Beethoven that they lost sight that Mozart and even haydn in some aspects were better composers. Beethoven couldn't write a melody or anything significant with dissonance like Mozart and Bach could. He simply was an average composer that spent years struggling with music.
@beethovenlovedmozart
@beethovenlovedmozart 4 года назад
Beethoven was above average in heart, but average in composing.
@LachlanTyrrell2003
@LachlanTyrrell2003 4 года назад
@@beethovenlovedmozart Beethoven? An "average" composer? How dare you. Of course, Beethoven could write melodies. Take a look at the second movement of his Pathetique sonata or the second movement of his 27th sonata. Brahms can have his opinion, however, don't hold it as truth. There are plenty of other composers that have had negative opinions on other composers. Tchaikovsky called Brahms a talentless bastard and labelled his music an utterly empty wasteland. Does that make him one? What average composer revolutionises the purpose of music and has such a profound effect as to heavily influence the next century of composers? If he was an average composer, he would not be rated among the greatest by musicologists and his music wouldn't be as widespread and symbolic as it is today.
@beethovenlovedmozart
@beethovenlovedmozart 4 года назад
@@LachlanTyrrell2003 I love Beethoven..But Brahms brought up a lot of great points that people don't think about. For one, all of Beethovens commissioned works were below average. The reason? Because commissioned works meant he had to produce them more quickly. His 9th symphony literally took him over 10 years to write. I'm just saying, it better be good if you have 10 years to write it. Imagine if Mozart spent even a year on something. With that focus and time, Mozart would've produce even greater works. Beethoven didn't write these works overnight. It wasn't natural for him but also it's the reason they are so good..
