The work (K. 515) was completed on April 19, 1787, less than a month before the completion of his stormy G Minor Quintet, K. 516. This would not be the last time that a great pair of C major/G minor works of the same form would be published in close proximity and assigned consecutive Köchel numbers. The following year, the 40th (G minor) and 41st (C major) symphonies would be completed within a few weeks of each other.
This quintet inspired Schubert to write his own string quintet in the same key (his scoring involves two cellos rather than two violas as in Mozart's quintet). The opening theme of Schubert's work retained many of the characteristics of Mozart's opening theme, such as decorative turns, irregular phrase lengths, and rising staccato arpeggios (the latter appear only in Schubert's recapitulation).
Performers : Gábor TAKÁCS-NAGY · Takács Quartet · Károly Schranz · Gábor Ormai · András Fejér · Dénes Koromzay
1. Allegro 0:01
2. Menuetto. Allegretto 9:15
3. Andante 15:11
4. Allegro 24:24

The coda theme at 26:45 is something only Mozart could write. It really displays the playful and almost childish character of his music; it's so simple but so catchy and almost sounds like Mozart is mocking the listener. It reminds me of the coda theme in the first movement of the Jupiter symphony. This man was able to pass from complicated contrapuntal passages to these stupidly easy motifs with no effort. What a genius he was.

It's a little bridge back to the main theme..some call it a bridge, transition, or even just a third theme. Sounds like a bridge to me. Reminds me of the little 10 second melody right at the end of the first act of Don Giovanni that Mozart tosses in there for Giovanni to sing that his courage will never break. Totally agree that it's so simple it sounds like a joke lol

@@ItsManana Yeah, it's even called cadence theme sometimes. I've always been calling it "coda theme" because it's after the two main themes of the exposition, and besides it's more like a motif than a true theme since it somehow lacks the solidity of the two themes. We might even call it "the Mozart move"

With all that anticipation of the end of the Exposition I was disappointed that we didn't get to hear the repeat (ie C major) but instead got C minor. I wonder what in general goes into deciding whether to do a first movement repeat?
@marcus8258

Sometimes it's probably just that they wouldn't have the space to fit several works on 1 CD if they played all the repeats!
@timothythorne9464
@timothythorne9464 3 года назад
The Exposition isn't repeated in this recording, although I have a recording whereby, in true Classical period fashion, it is repeated. It is unusually long for a Classical period exposition, longer even than those of Beethoven's Eroica Symphony and his Archduke Trio op. 97. So here the decision is made to segue directly from the exposition to the development, which begins in C minor.

The omission of the 1rst mvt repeat is really too bad, indeed, without mentioning that the intonation of two violas remains more than approximative... (OMG) With such a "mainstream" interpretation, this recording is not we could call a gratifying musical experience...

They both found reached their greatest creative and spiritual heights with their respective quartets. I discovered Beethoven's decades ago. I'm recently giving Mozart's a listen - I wasn't expected the invention, the utilization of each member, these pieces are mind blowing.

@@angusmcmillan8981 Not superior to Beethoven's later output, but utter genius nevertheless. I thought Mozart only truly shined in his opera. These later quartets proved me wrong, and I'm overjoyed.

Beethoven is far better than this noise pollution, don't compare him with Mozart, music scholars know there is no comparison.

I love this piece and am really appreciative of the effort it took to produce this video, but I’m shocked at how unsatisfactory this performance is. It sounds like they’re impatient to finish it and go home. I only got through the first movement but not only did they skip an essential repeat but they rushed through the coda, with no sense that it’s a written-out cadenza. And the intonation and ensemble is sloppy throughout. It feels like these musicians don’t like Mozart and are just doing this to fulfill a contract.
