The String Quintet No. 4 in G minor, K. 516 was written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Like all of Mozart's string quintets, it is a "viola quintet" in that it is scored for string quartet and an extra viola (two violins, two violas and cello).
The work was completed on May 16, 1787, less than a month after the completion of his grand C Major Quintet, K. 515. This would not be the last time that a great pair of C major/G minor works of the same form would be published in close proximity and assigned consecutive Köchel numbers. The following year, the 40th (G minor) and 41st (C major) symphonies would be completed within a few weeks of each other.
The mood of the piece is dark and melancholic, typical of Mozart's G minor works. The work is in four movements:
I. Allegro
II. Menuetto: Allegretto
III. Adagio ma non troppo
IV. Adagio - Allegro
The first movement is in sonata form with both the first and second themes beginning in G minor. The movement does not resolve to the major key in the recapitulation and has a minor-key ending.
The minuet is placed second and is a minuet in name only as the turbulent G minor theme and heavy third-beat chords make this movement very undancelike. The central trio is in a bright G major.
The third movement in E-flat major is slow, melancholic and wistful, furthering the despair brought forth by the previous movements. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky said of this movement: "No one has ever known as well how to interpret so exquisitely in music the sense of resigned and inconsolable sorrow."
The start of the fourth movement is not the typical quick-tempo finale, but a slow cavatina back in the home key of G minor. It is a dirge or lament that is even slower than the previous movement. The music wallows in this dark area for a few minutes before reaching an ominous pause. At this point, Mozart launches unexpectedly into the ebullient G major Allegro which creates a stark contrast between it and the movements that preceded it. Critics have often questioned how such an insouciant and carefree finale could be tacked on after three-plus movements of intense pathos.

as far as minor key string chamber works, check out K421, espc the one by the Mosaique Quartet. First movement is one of - IMO- Mozarts' best melodic ideas, very wistful, elegiac.

This quintet is sometimes used to show that Mozart was a preromantic. I do not think that this is a corrct approach, but this is not an issue. The fac is the tonality of G minor is used by Mozart to evoke a dramatic feeling - see for instance the two symphonies in that tonality. Here, we have a classical construction of all movements, with themes that are marked with that feeling of drama. In the first movement, one of the themes is expanded to cover a minor ninth. The expression of drama is quite direct in the first movement, while it is expressed by complex harmonies and counterpoint in the slow movement. The minuett/ scherzo uses odd harmonic extensions under the form of brutal exclamations. The finale brings to a "happy end" to resolve the tensions of the three first movements. This quintet is indeed one of the great masterworks of Mozart.

Perhaps the 1974 date is a clue to the pitch controversy - I must admit, I have good relative pitch and it does sound higher than I recall. "Authentic" performance practice was still being explored at that time - perhaps this is a "modern" tuning and our ears have become accustomed to lower pitched "authentic" ones... it's a mystery, that's for sure!

Listen to the last movement - it's ridiculously fast. That's the solution to the pitch controversy - the "playback speed" of the recording has been accelerated, resulting in a raised pitch. Yes, no? Perhaps the gentleman who identified the recording could verify this. I only have good relative pitch, not perfect - but it is indeed very jarring and unmistakably higher than I recall. As for the supposed cheerfulness of the finale - context is everything. Mozart knew exactly what he was doing and we need to dig a little deeper. The movement seems childlike, but I believe it is a glimpse of former innocence seen at a distance, through the veil of adult experience - which is ultimately the experience of death (the death of his father, a famously tortured relationship). It is a heartbreaking reminiscence: of what we were, of a carefree, blissful time that can be recalled, but which has been irrevocably lost. "et in Arcadia ego..." It's as though Mozart is recalling the period in his life, his extraordinary childhood, when he and his father experienced complete happiness together. That's the measure of his grief. That's how I experience it, at any rate.

Apparently Edvard Grieg shared Eugene Oneguine's judgment of Mozart as not quite up to snuff. Grieg, therefore took one on Mozart's piano sonatas and, for a better term, dubbed on top of it, a similar sonata of his own invention. The result: DEFINITELY NOT up to snuff. Worse yet: UGLY! I for one--as a non-expert avid listener--enjoyed the quartet AS IS a lot.
