First movement of Mozart's 40th symphony, accompanied by a scrolling bar-graph score.
FAQ
Q: What do the colors in the bar-graph score mean?
A: Each color corresponds to one line in the orchestral score, and therefore to an instrument or group of instruments; here's the key:
www.musanim.com...
Each family of instruments (flute, clarinet, double reed, brass, string) also has its own shape (ellipse, octagon, inverted ellipse, rectangle, rhombus).
Q: Where can I see the score for this piece?
A: Here:
tinyurl.com/moz...
Q: I appreciate the animated graphical scores you make; how can I help?
A: There are many ways you can support my work:
free: watch my videos, like them, and share them with friends
¢¢¢: buy me a coffee ko-fi.com/musanim (one-time)
$$$: become a Patreon patron: / musanim (per-video/per-month)
!!!!: underwrite the production of a video: www.musanim.com...
Q: Didn't you already do a video of this piece?
A: Yes, I did, but it turned out that the recording was pirated, so I licensed another recording. I did two versions of the new video, this one ...
• Mozart, Symphony No. 4...
... which follows my normal conventions, and this one ...
... in which I compressed the violoncello and contrabass parts into a single part (since they play the same notes, an octave apart); this allows the rest of the score to be bigger.
Q: What can you tell me about the performers?
A: Not much, I'm afraid. I licensed this recording from Premium Beat, but "Wilfred Symphony Orchestra" is not a public orchestra, and Premium Beat does not release information about them.
Q: How do you align the animation with the music?
A: Here's a description:
www.musanim.com...
Q: What can you tell me about this piece?
A: You can read about it here:
en.wikipedia.or...)
Q: Could you please do a video of _______?
A: Please read this:
www.musanim.com...

I'm a total beginner in listening to classical music, and these animations are a brilliant 'way in'. They allow me to hold my attention completely on the music and become far more immersed than I would be if I were just trying to listen without any visual stimulation, or indeed watching a performance. Although I must have heard this piece (or the first few bars at least) hundreds of times in my life, this is the first time I've actually listened, and it was an incredible experience. I would much prefer to listen to whole pieces than single movements though, but you can't have everything you want all the time, can you? Many thanks for your brilliant work!

It's so gratifying to hear that I've given you a 'way in' for classical music. I would like to do whole pieces too, and sometimes I'm able to. If you're feeling a little more adventurous, you might want to check out Prokofiev's Classical Symphony (the whole thing!): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FCWlOjZs5a4.html

This is the first ever classical piece i've listened to, 11 years ago i listened to it on an LP and i still have it! This is my personal all time favorite, i love the weight and contrast of the cellos (Something somewhat characteristic in Mozart's symphonies), and i also love the well worked winds of the entire symphony. Listening to this piece animated like this is actually what i hear (I have Absolute Pitch), all the colors of the different instruments... Ah, it's magic. I love classical music because i'm really sensitive to it (Yes, i cry listening to some pieces [Specially Chopin]), and i feel it touches my soul, and gives me an indescribable peace. Classical music has become the only genre that i actively listen to everyday, no matter where i am.

This is a brilliant visualization of the complexity of a symphony... Allows to hear every single note from every small faint instrument, plus the way they all come together and then split apart... And from reading the older comments, I see that you have made great improvements on the graphical details. I just love this. You are a genius. Thank you... thank you... thank you.... I've viewed this video a dozen times so far, and each time I discover few new things...

Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, John Williams, et al. More talent in any one of those prolific geniuses than in all of pop, rock, and rap combined over the last ten years. Even my 13 year old asked me why modern music was so "shallow", as he put it, compared to "old" music.

+Viola Da Gamba-GNY When you say you like the old one, are you referring to the recording or the graphics? I tried to keep the graphics enough the same that teachers could use it in the same way as the original. If there is something about the graphics that make this less usable pedagogically, please let me know, and I'll consider making an alternate version. (I can't do anything about the recording without spending hundreds of dollars to license a better one.)

@smalin 8 лет назад
If you wanted to get 60 fps in the 2006 Windows MAMPlayer software, you'd probably want to do something like this: create MIDI that's slowed down by some factor (at least 1/2 speed, but could also be 1/4 or 1/6 or 1/10 to get a smoother result), play the slowed-down MIDI through the MAMPlayer and capture the video, then speed up the playback by the appropriate factor when assembling the video.

Its really hard to find a better musical metaphor for inevitable fate than at 5:03 In my opinion Not even in beethoven's 5th (which took many ideas from this symphony)
@RalphDratman

+Verlenzius That is very interesting, so I am trying to understand what you are referring to. Could you explain further, please? Thank you very much.
@123Joack
@123Joack 8 лет назад
It is of course just my opinion, but to me the combination of the dominant pedal in the bass, the repetitive rythm and the slowly and chromaticly decending melody give a feeling of trying to escape the re-entrance of the main theme. I was referring to beethovens 5th because it is often described as being about fate and the struggle of fighting against it, wich it definitly achieves. i just think that mozarts attempt is much more poetic and pin points this idea better. (I am not a music scholar, im just very passionate about these little details)
@RalphDratman
@RalphDratman 8 лет назад
+Verlenzius I think I see what you mean, but you mentioned only one time, 5:03. Where is the chromatic descending part you are talking about, and where does the main theme re-enter? I hear the latter at about 5:20, but I'm not sure if that is what you are referring to.
