I used this setup recently when i played a show for Analogue Haven in Southern California. I actually had a ton of fun with it and im probably going to start slowly converting a lot of my Octatrack things to this!

It's really satisfying how the MPC is about the same size as the modular, they just look right together.

Behind all this there's one important thing: you have a gig. :) That's a huuuuge factor that naturally puts many things in place, makes you separate the important from the unimportant, what is really required, what works or not, etc. There are many people out there who try to start making music, a little bit of this and a little bit of that, they get gear, make something, but quite often, ultimately nothing coherent comes out. Because they don't have a gig. I feel that the biggest possible favor anyone could do is, organize a time and a place where people can perform for an actual audience. The water starts flowing! It can be something as small as a family get-together, a birthday party, something in school for kids, anything. Even the existence of gigs somewhere can serve the same purpose - if people can _dream_ of having a gig, it can guide their music-making and their whole future.

MPC1K or 2.5K with JJOS is basically endgame for hardware midi sequencing/sampler. It's an incredible production tool that has not lost its utility over the years. Sold my pyramid awhile back, still on the Cirklon list, but past those it's still top in my book.

Hey! You said something profound. 15:18 "That's where creativity lives--in struggle." I keep getting reminded that having limits to push up against and struggle with is good, and keeping all your options open is often actually a bad thing, which seems counter-intuitive but it keeps getting proven true. It's like... having limits gives you a structure that you can use almost like scaffolding for your creativity. A finite, well-understood space of possibilities, versus a limitless space where everything is possible, is your friend. I think that, as much as anything else, is why a lot of people like to get away from their DAW. The DAW is too powerful. The space of possibilities too vast. Often a selection of a few well-understood, dedicated-function tools is better. "Creativity lives in struggle." That was well-said. Very succinct.

I love what you make, including the beat in this video, and whatever you find helps you make the stuff that's just what fits for you. You even mention using instruments where you have to creatively overcome the limitations, which some people aren't able to do so well. Keep it up! Loving all of this.

You'd be surprised how unlimited this is, though! It's a midi sequencer with almost unlimited tracks, it's got inputs and audio recording for recording midi tracked instruments, etc etc. It's 90% of a DAW! Just no really long form recording, which is not a huge deal unless you want to add a vocalist or something similar

Quality video as always Ricky :-) I used to own an MPC1000 and I stupidly sold it. After really missing it I thought long and hard and ended up buying the MPC Live. I still miss the 1000 lol. The Live sounds awesome and the effects are amazing, it’s really good. You can power 2 x USB powered synths from it and run them through the internal FX, this means I can have the MPC and my Bass Station 2 fully portable. I do miss a few of the immediate functions of the 1000 and I think the 1000 still looks really cool, thinking practically though, the Live wins for me.
@NickHchaos
@NickHchaos 5 лет назад
I know a few other people also doing something like this, seems like it makes sense. Although it’s not a sampler, as far as sequencing goes, the five12 Vector does everything you pointed out and a whole lot more (probability, internal and external modulation, sub sequencers, as many different programs within a song per track as you wants), has tons of both cv out and midi out, and very logical functionality, hi res displays. I think it’s one of the best sequencers ever made. I was on the Cirklon waiting list for a year, but got off it once I got my Vector.

I’ve been on the MPC1k JJOS2XL for the past 6 years. I’ve been looking for a new killer sequencer for the past 2 years and doing constant sight unseen comparisons with every sequencer available thinking I needed something new. All the other products left me wondering how I would actually finish things or get them to a “finished working state.” I asked myself what I really wanted and at the end of the day it was some sort of x0x style drum/melody sequencer. So I just paired a beatstep pro with my 1k and couldn’t be happier. Well, I wish the probability function in it worked like Elektron stuff but we can’t seem to have it all, can we? /ramble

MPC 1000's are an absolute steal for what you can pick them up for second hand. I'm seeing most of them on the market for around $350 these days and that's quite a deal. Functionally there's not much different between this model and the 2500. It's just tighter and more compact. But, as always, the best thing about an MPC is the DACs. The machines just sound polished and pro. The drums here being an excellent example of that. Do you use the master compressor and EQ?

I actually wish the MPC Live had dedicated buttons for Mute/TrackMute/NextSequence like the mpc1000 does. Gotta go into the touch menu to do that; which isnt very intuitive live. There are still things I believe the mpc1000 does better than the live. Another thing w/ the MPCLive; It cant have a Program playing a bass sample melody + send the same program midi out to another instrument. Like ive seen you do with the circuit for example. Its still a great machine tho. I do have good things to say about the Live but this comments getting long. Point is. The mpc1000 is a great machine; i wouldnt get rid of it for a Live. Love the video! :D

I’ve had two MPC 1000’s, and a 2500. They are great machines, turned into phenomenal machines with JJOSXL. That being said, I sold my 1000’s for things I can’t remember and sold the 2500 after I bought my MPC Live. After the first 30 minutes of updating it and registering it with my computer, I haven’t had to hook it up to my computer once. Yes, switching tracks can be kind of annoying using a touch screen or navigating with the Q links but it’s really not that big of a deal and given everything else it can do that the 1000 and 2500 can’t, it’s trade offs are really minor. I love my MPC Live; my biggest learning curve was dealing with the lack of a flip up screen. That’s about it. I also had a Deluge, the archaic screen killed it for me. Browsing was a chore. Lovely instrument too, but it always felt like the next version they make will be the one to own.

Not sure why more people don’t utilize the MPC in relation to Eurorack especially folks performing live music. It’s an awesome tool for marring Euro with your other midi capable hardware synths. I’m at the point where I feel I have the perfect set up for me. I have mpc midi A out going to an RK004 that branches to 6 hardware synths. Midi B out goes to a Polyend Poly where i can run up to 8 channels out of cvgate, pitch, and modulation to euro. I run all kinds of sequencers through the 2 mpc midi ins. Apps, hardware sequencers, midi controllers. This allows you the flexibility to bring just about any kind of sequencer to eurorack. By running it through the mpc you can build full tracks recording midi data and modulations. Thats in addition to being able to add samples to the tracks as well. Gone are the limitations of rack space for sequencers and all the $$ needed to buy them. The negatives, you sacrifice the ability to modulate the sequencer and you have to toy with the transpose to get the pitch right to euro. An MPC, RK004, and Polyend poly is an awesome studio set up.

What'd you think of mutable instruments? Thinking of starting a modular build and the plaits, stages, and tides all look good to me
@jc3drums916
@jc3drums916 5 лет назад
Mutable Instruments modules are awesome. They're very well thought-out, easy to use, and very capable. (The discontinued early modules are perhaps less so, but still really good.) However, a lot of people know that, so a lot of people have them - in particular, sound sources such as Plaits and Rings - so there's the risk of sounding like everyone else. One other thing I find with modules such as Plaits and Rings is that, if you're really into sound design, they take some of the fun out of it, because your sounds come out of the module almost fully formed. There isn't quite the same feeling of having multiple modules working together to create a sound. Part of me wishes I were doing Rings's modal and inharmonic string syntheses entirely from scratch using analog modules instead. But I imagine that would require a lot more money and HP. But I expect I'm in the minority here.

Ooohh yeah!! Nice one !! I been playing has "drummer"(fingerdrums) and DJ/electronic guy on a flamenco fusion band for a looooong time now....MPC 1000 it's been my main tool. And you are right with limitations and gear. I like to use hardware for a concrete function. Sometimes I think "this machine can do much more tricks...I should try do this or that on stage next time" but at the end live performing it's about (in my opinion) been comfortable and transmit.... I meet connect with the people .... And if you are playing a very complex setup you lost your connection with your audience. Good work! Nice video!!

Yo Ricky (and anyone else who own a 1000) you should try playing around with the multi-outs on the back. You've got four separate mono outs (which can also be 2 stereo pairs) plus the main stereo out. Running vocals/synths/drums through my guitar fx sounds reaaaally cool. Great video bro!

Been doing a similar thing but with modular and Deluge, tend to use different drum kits on tracks as well though. Love the modular for the interesting glitchy precussion and use of filters etc. Nice videos!

I agree 100% with what you said about struggling to create out of limitations, I mean historically we are tool-making problem-solving creatures, although we are also the root of so many problems I guess.

Awesome mate. So glad you made this. I seem to be on the right track with my mpc1000 this just stamps im doing things correct. I’ve been having a ball with the se02 and mpc1000. Just trying to figure out some reverb options live for drums and synths. Maybe a pedal?

Not sure if I'd ever go for a vintage MPC vs. the Live/X I got now... but I just did pick up an rs7000 and mc-909, for what it's worth... ;-) (this video was a nice re-assurance that I am not going crazy adding more and more vintage sequencers and also analog synths when I already have an over-the-top computer setup also with Maschine, tons of plugins, controllers, the works)

I like the 1000 better than the Live as well for that exact reason. After two years with the Live I sold it, bought a 1000 and pimped it out with the difference in cash. The Live does a lot of things but it's too dependent on the screen which makes it harder to do the simple stuff (like sequence the rest of my gear). Couldn't be happier now...

how could you do smoother and more free choice or improv/random transitions with the mpc1000? perhaps somehow with the sliders and layers? have you send DMX KREW's live set video on FOLD youtube? seems like he's pretty much scrolling from one seq to the next in a predetermined order, and so not necessarily free to change up the selection/order of the next track/song/composition to a completely different one in a live setting, if you understand what i mean? perhaps somehow with layers or layered patterns or midi cc programmable controllable stuff?

Hey man, great videos! I'm curious if you would take this over the Digitakt? You can also monitor audio through the Digitakt but it would be mono? Considering if I could hook up an MPC 1000 for more or less the similar price second hand would do you think has more value? (I am wanting to sequence external synth)

Makes a lot of sense about filter, release and mutes being readily accessible in the same place always, and I felt the same way about the MPC Live when I tried it though your command of these machines is on another level. Out of curiosity, since almost all your jams are pretty much house, what would be your top recommendations for essential house recordings or artists to check out?

I'm wondering I can use a midi splitter box with the mpc 1000, like can you assign midi notes to certain midi channels and use more than 2 channels? If so a splitter should work. Only wondering because I just picked up an mpc 1000 fixer upper

Nice vid, and explains why you've never reviewed an MPC One or the like. Funny you say you're confused by it though and then use an Octatrak, which scares the crap out of me when I see it on your vids ;). I know what you mean by complexity as I have a Push2, which is great, but has sooo many options! Thanks to you, I'm definitely going DAWless with some modular and an MPC One as from what I've seen, it seems way simpler than a Push2. Keep up the GR8 Vids :)

pfftt, i'm STILL learning it haha. but to get the basics down, give yourself a week and you can start making some tracks. I recently got the newer MPCs and its a little trickier, but far more flexible and "up to date" maybe look into an MPC One if the MPC 1000 is crazy overpriced (i never pay more than $500-600 for an MPC 1000) but times are a changin'
@Airhaert
@Airhaert 3 года назад
@@RickyTinez Thanks man! I was looking at the MPC One today actually! It looks insanely loaded with features! And like you said "Up to Date" Yet... is it too much? I mean I thought DAWless jamming was to be with out a screen but now with the MPC One, the DAW seems to be in this device as a smaller screen? I guess the plus is that there is no mouse clicking involved tho.
