Can you make one bout Gerald? I’m writing an essay about whose the most impactful character in the play and I’d say it was Gerald but I have nothing to back that claim🤦‍♂️

Hi, if you are writing an essay now, it's unlikely a future Gerald video would be posted in time, so here are a few points you can include to argue your point about Gerald being the most impactful character: - He is the character with the most money and highest social standing in the play. As I mentioned in this video, even Mr. Birling tries to suck up to him as he is the ideal that he wants to reach. Money = power in this society and therefore, he has the potential to have the biggest impact on the characters. - Gerald's actions concerning Daisy Renton (Eva Smith) are possibly the most heinous as he continued to keep her on the side, knowing that she was in love with him and that he had no intentions of ever having a real relationship with her. This probably affected her the most out of any of the characters as she had real feelings for him, so to be cut off so suddenly would have been devastating. - Gerald is the one who discovers that Inspector Goole is not a real police officer. He does his own investigating on the side and reveals that no one on the police force knows anyone by that name, which allows the Birlings to start absolving themselves from any responsibility or guilt they might have felt. He also makes the phone call to the morgue, learning that there was no girl brought in recently who had died from suicide. Without these actions, the Birlings (or Arthur and Sybil at any rate) may never have had the opportunity to show their true colours and how little they actually care about the lessons the Inspector had come to teach. - Although he initially seems shaken and guilty when the Inspector forces him to reveal his affair, Gerald is sneakily one of the worst characters in this play, as even though the audience expects his attitude to be similar to Sheila and Eric, he ends up being more like Mr. and Mrs. Birling in his views and morals. He is very quick to absolve himself of guilt once he feels he no longer has to take responsibility and even goes so far as to offer Sheila her ring back, in a way which implies that he expects her to come crawling back to him with her tail between her legs, even though he had just admitted to cheating on her the whole summer. His money and social status makes him believe that he is above reproach and can get away with just about anything. And sadly this may be true, as if he was to distance himself from the Birlings, they would be deeply affected, much more so than he would be. These are just a few quick points that I can think of, hope it helps, and good luck writing your essay!
