They had a three album deal and this is the last song, so it's the Bungle apocalypse. They blow out the sun, set aflame the sea and roll up the sky on their way out and get drunk as it all ends and vanish into the heavens.

@@neonskepetunije I just rewatched it and my memory lied to me. It's pretty much the last album with one song from the first album and nothing from the avant guard second one. It's still good, but not as representative as I thought it was when I recommended it. The second album,Disco Volante is well worth the initial 'what the hell is this this hell'!

'Pin my ear to the wisdom post Hang me up and drain me dry Mend my shipwrecked spirit Lift the veil from my eyes' Odin was hung from a the World Tree and gained enlightenment and Christ was crucified on a cross and ascended to heaven, so this may relate to that. There are themes from different religions in some Bungle songs, even getting as obscure as the Peacock God.

A odmah zatim, prepoznala si tehno-pop ritam i sanjivu molsku pratnju, gde Paton cvrkuće nešto svojim dubokim glasom (ono "okači me i osuši, prikucaj na itd." deo...).

Fun fact: 'Goodbye Sober Day' is another UK colloquialism in the English language to describe 'Sober holidays' 🤣 You've a lot of influences from all sub-genres with Mr. Bungle California is hideously deceptive on many levels. A casual listen to the beginning of most of the tracks here will call to mind a tribute to the Beach Boys, complete with harmonized vocals, lazy surf tremolo guitar lines, and an overall sense of glimmering pop. Mr Bungle pays careful attention to crafting songs of a much tighter sense of theme and timberal color, as riff after riff moves from a 50’s surf-pop ballad to anywhere else imaginable, like a perverse musical version of ‘6 degrees to Brian Wilson’. Mr Bungle is often characterized as unclassifiable. They make music of an incredible range of styles that cannot be grouped into any genre; one second they are playing a riff that sounds like a 50’s band playing classical music and the next sounds like an orchestra of toy zylophones playing atonal death metal. ‘Disco Volante’ would be the clearest example of their transitive chaotic casserole of styles, heavily influenced by the work of avant-garde composer John Zorn. California is quite different, and if it had to be said that it was influenced by another composer/arranger, it would certainly be Brian Wilson. MP's vocals are spot-on. MP has a versatile voice, no matter what he does, he fills the spot perfectly. Incredible for the range and clarity of high notes. Alternates between high pitched falsetto singing and low baritone vocals, and very rarely screams (something the band employed into the majority of their early material) and also doesn't rap a single line on the whole cd. All the genre's the band previously attempted, most notably funk, are gone (exept for Death metal, which appears in a handful of songs), instead replaced with jazz and pop and basically anything soft. There are still heavy moments, but they're in small numbers, unlike the first albums which would typically have songs that featured metal as their main focus. I'd say I can see "Golem II" being on "Disco Volante", as it reminds me of a more serious version of "The Desert Search For Techno Allah", and I can see "None Of Them Knew They Were Robots" fitting on the debut, as it's one of the noiser songs (with all the samples and with the genre changing every 10 seconds), and it features Patton at his most diverse, as part of the song contains death growls and high pitched screaming. 'Goodbye Sober Day' is the monumental closer and perfect way to finalize an album. If there is one song that hits back to their older days. 'Goodbye Sober Day' sample of Traditional Folk's 'The Ramayana Monkey Chant (Ketjak)' It is much better to experience live. 'Goodbye Sober Day' is the definitive Bungle song and a definite highlight of 'California'. The album takes influences from doowop to trash metal, from funk to middle eastern music. The whole album is a journey. We go from this hybrid of the Beachboys and metal song called "The Air-Conditioned Nightmare" from the doowop track "Vanity Fair" to the avant-garde jazz rock inspired "Goodbye Sober Day". In some tracks, the whole history of heavy metal is portrayed (NWOBHM). Mr Bungle maybe lived in the shadows of 'Faith No More', the band that would always be Pattons most successful and the band that had the most commercial value. However this obviously didn't stop them as the band actually outlived 'Faith No More' and produced an album that is arguably better than anything 'Faith No More' produced. And the interesting thing is, in our post genre world, this record has become oddly prescient. Mr. Bungle is a metal band at heart but they really can't help but to stretch out here and there. 'California' comes across as progressive metal/island vibe fusioners w/ more than just a little talent to back that up their way through an album's worth of just about every sonical landscape imaginable. The strange thing about this all is they managed to put this all in a popfriendly package. It's somehow both their most technically sophisticated and most accessible album. (Sweet Charity, Retrovertigo, Pink Cigarette, Golem II: The Bionic Vapour Boy, Goodbye Sober Day). Golem II is the coolest concept for a album. Probably more tracks, come to think of it. If, like so many others, you need the music you listen to to match your mood, then 'California' has at least music for whatever you need. Many bands are praised for incorporating a lot of genres into their songs but in some cases, the influence is so small that you struggle to hear it at all. In Mr. Bungle's case however, there are a million influences everywhere, and the transitions are so smooth and effortless that you can't help but be amazed. It also displays their amazing musicianship and songwriting skills, and also makes it a little more interesting than your standard album. Amongst all the genres, there is also a lot of chaos and a unique 'sound' present that unifies all of these different influences. Mike Patton is incredible on this album, demonstrating his abilities in a variety of styles, though there's not much of the Fantomas or solo project style sound effects. This is to contemporary experimental rock what 'Reign In Blood' was to thrash; 'Sgt Pepper's' was to sixties music or 'was to punk: the album that defines that era. These are the ones that set the bar and by which these genres are defined. Imagine Pet Sounds era Beach Boys and Frank Zappa but schizophrenic lol. This is an especially good analogy, because "Goodbye Sober Day". That song is a perfect closer, This album is the shortest of the three Mr. Bungle albums, mixes Beach Boys style harmonies, doo wop, rockabilly, bossa nova, swing, Ennio Morricone, Burt Bacharach style pop, as well as metal, albeit much less than on their previous releases. This is the Mr. Bungle equivalent of a “mature” album, without the goofiness of the debut or the rampant experimenting and wanton sonic exploration of Disco Volante. All the tracks are very distinct from one another, yet, despite the constant fusion of different genres, the album does manage to hold together. All the tracks here are interesting: the majority are wonderful and memorable as well, such as the Beach Boys- esque “Sweet Charity”, the sci-fi rockabilly epic “None of Them Knew They Were Robots” the incredibly normal sounding (yet still brilliant) “Retrovertigo”…in fact the only less than stellar song here is “Vanity Fair”, which sounds far less inspired and well-written than the rest of the album. Apart from that, the songs are consistently glorious. Just like all the other Mr. Bungle's albums, "California" mixes several other music styles such as surf rock, folk, metal, Western etc. etc. The whole album reminds of The Beach Boys and Faith No More. "Retrovertigo" sounds very much like Faith No More if you ask me, because of Patton's serious singing voice and the enormous drums. "Mr. Bungle" and "Disco Volante" had several long "silent", artistic moments but unfortunately "California" goes straight to business and keeps on rocking almost all the time. The only problem is that the album feels like it ends surprisingly fast. There arent' that many brass solos either. Of course, there are still a lot of styles to be found in the mix, but this time the fusion sounds tighter and much more melodic. There are a lot of different sounds but supported by a phenomenal, tasteful jazz/rock rhythmic base, whose elasticity provided a great range of sonic possibilities. The different sections are well constructed and tied together, and the great variety of instruments and soundscapes makes the whole listening a very rewarding one. By 1999 Mike Patton was no longer focused on Faith No More, and so he had more free space to merge his particular ideas in a better way both in his solo work, and in his side-project, Mr. Bungle. They had published 2 LP's since 1985 and took really long breathes between releases. While their first LP was somewhat reminiscent of the 'Faith No More' funk-metal sound. n this world there exist bands whose ambition exceeds their talent. Contrarily, there are bands not interested in experimentation, opting instead to stick with the sound they’re most comfortable with. Mr. Bungle, on the other hand, seem to find comfort in experimentation while simultaneously having the talent to back it all up. The comparatively conventional song structures and occasional mainstream leanings of Mr. Bungle's self-titled debut album with the bizarre laundry list of musical genres, was without one of the most refreshing musical experiences I had ever heard upon first listen and continues to be one of the most, if not the most, fascinating album I've ever heard. None of this should mesh well and be this revisitable yet it is, much more than their still stellar discography. The most idea pushing project Mike Patton has ever been apart of. One of the best comparisons I can give to Mike Patton's persona as an artist is that of an evil Bugs Bunny, or the devil as drawn by Tex Avery. An incredibly animated and mischievous character that has a sinister twist laying underneath. Mr. Bungle is able to accomplish what eluded them before; the ability to create a song with a story, and allow the experimentation that defines the group be an accessory to the music and not be the music. In 1999. The 90s saw a return of the Brit-pop aesthetics, Stereolab channeled Bacharach, and Mr. Bungle channeled those brief few years where Mike Patton and company obliterate and reconstruct just about everything that was good about pop music in the 60s and assembles it in their cockeyed image.
