An elderly British schoolmaster is upset when a new teacher comes to the school and is an immediate success with the boys. The older man thinks he isn't getting the respect he deserves. www.imdb.com/title/tt0040615/?...
Once again my opinion is proven right that one needs, at least 90% of the time, to watch an old film to find a real story about more than fluff, with interesting characters who actually have good qualities. A fine movie.

@@JohnSmith-dr9vlSeems you have issues John Smith and want everyone to be as miserable as you. Unfortunate that your education was lacking. Write down the corrections you feel are needed throughout the country and send them to parliament. With your imagination for statistics I am sure they will get right on it.
Humans are the same no matter where we’re from. Good, evil, prideful, hopeful and wonderfully made in Gods image. I love the classics and yes, especially British ones. You Britain’s are Brilliant!! Thank you so much for sharing this gem.
Thank you Canada ….I am English, I immigrated to B C in the late sixties ,I loved your country and very polite people .My son and grandchildren are Canadian….Best wishes to you….
Thank you so very much for making this lovely film available. It's 2024 and it's near impossible to find film that isn't filled with violence , nudity and poorly written scripts. I was able to escape into a world long past. The acting and the music were excellent. I hope to find more films such as this.
This film explains much of the fusty atmosphere of my old school, most of the masters were pompous old gits who just pushed us through the curriculum like we were in a sausage making machine. My favourite master was Peter Matthews, our Latin master, who dealt adeptly with a difficult subject, and brought it to life. He was also an excellent form master, with great empathy for his kids. Helped me through a very difficult time in my life. Masters with these qualities are rare.
Teachers the world over with these qualities are rare, not just those in the British upper class school system. Those are the ones one never forgets, who make their subject come alive and often change the course of a student's life.
I remember the "sausage machine" teaching at the three grammar schools I attended (through a series of house-moves) in the mid-'60s. This was at sixth-form level, with teachers dictating material from their notes rather than involving the classes in discussion and debate.I got more out of working alone in a public library.
I had an English master in Australia who came from Britain. He had been teaching in an English public school and could no longer stand the atmosphere of that system. He was the high point in my education as it was he who made his subject interesting and compelling. After 60 years I still owe John Street my admiration for doing what others could only aspire too.
Was in an all boys Grammar School in the early 1960's the teachers and Headmaster almost all served in the war, including a bomber pilot who taught chemistry the respect for them was enormous!!!
@ Kevin Martyn- Made 71 years ago is why you really enjoyed it so. Thank GOD theres countless hours of these old B&W movies on here or we wouldn't have any movies to watch.
One of the reasons why there were so many fine actors in those days was the scripts they had which brought out the best in their talent, not the asinine stuff we see so much of today.
An acting tour de force from Marius Goring, David Farrar & Raymond Huntley. Marius Goring as the `old` Mr Perrin was 35 & David Farrar as the `young` Mr Traill was 39 when they made this film. Outstanding entertainment.
David Farrar didn't get many good parts (as happened to so many film-actors, like Robert Ryan) but actors can't be choosy. They should have tried harder to make Perrin less of a cartoon figure, and Goring's "old man" make-up just didn't convince.
I've been watching this great little film a lot lately, courtesy of the British channel Talking Pictures TV. Despite the age of the picture (and, by the way, the novel was written in 1911), the story deals with some profound and somewhat modern themes. You can't help but feel sorry for Perrin though - he's Mr Chips without the luck.
I absolutely love these older British movies with school boy schools. This was a great film by great Actors. Exceptional story and filmed so well with a wonderful musical score. The ending was so unexpected! So sad in many ways. Actions of the pompous! The British certainly have the know how on great films. Thank you for finding this gem and posting !
It reminds me of that other classic, "Goodbye Mr Chips" (1939), with Robert Donat, Greer Garson, Paul Henreid and others. A true British classsic. Catch it if you haven't.
and there it is…I came looking for the idiot that thought those were the good old days and there you are, close to the top. If god likes average boys then he must love idiots more because he made more of those. It was schools like that which made our current corrupt politicians and the pedophiles that are the scourge of society. A breeding ground for pathological narcissists and liars, bullies and war mongering business men. The motto of the men who were products of this environment should be… *_”never kick a man when he is down unless he appears to be getting up again”_*
I’ve watched this a few times since it was first posted. Reminds me of grammar school days, which I loved, apart from the forgettable teachers of course and some ridiculously silly rules. I think we all remember the odd few staff members who shaped our lives for the future, not forgetting those dear classmates and friendships forged that remain embedded in our memories. Bless them all wherever they may be.
I read the book a couple of years ago and have wanted to see the film ever since. Thank you very much for making this available - it deserves to be more well known. An excellent production.
Thanks so much MANSAISTUFF - yet another absolutely perfectly uploaded gem of a movie! About two months ago I watched "Take My Life" (1947) accidentally, and it has since become one of my all-time 10 favorite movies, and I've been watching it, at bedtime, once or twice a week. This one, too, is another excellent British-made movie! Some of the very, very best B&W movies ever were made in England from the '30s through the '60s.... However, although we've had Turner Classic Movies (TCM) continuously on our Cable subscription since 1991...my, goodness, there are far, far more (many of high-quality, professionally uploaded) British, American...classic gems (esp. my favorite Sherlock Holmes, and FILM NOIR genre) on RU-vid, thanks to these most diligent, generous contributors, e.g., MansaiStuff.
Unusual and well-acted drama. The British public school system was certainly unique.I was not familiar with any of these actors but will look for them again. Many thanks for posting.
TY very much for the upload, a brilliant film, fine ensemble acting & a truly great performance from Marius Goring. Check out 'Take My Life' another excellent drama which also starred Greta Gynt & Marius Goring.
+Mike Jackson Yes, Farrah and the rest of the cast were all good. Even the headmaster despite his dastardliness and the compulsion to dislike him strongly
I wish all movies on RU-vid had a similar description as yours, a very brief description telling you only a general overview that doesn't give away the entire plot. I also appreciate the IMDB link quickly accessible as you have it, so I can see the list of actors-actresses and watch the trailer with just one click without searching for it. So simple it's perfect, yet rarely done by most RU-vidrs. That alone deserves a thumbs up. Great job, thank you!
@Brian Barcus - Here here ! well said my good man , capital , capital ! .... Speaking of "doesn't give away the whole plot " , I could never understand why those old Columbo "detective" tv series reruns are so popular with my fellow americans . Right from the start you see the perpetrators , crime they committed , etc . What is the point ? Even the great Dostoevsky failed with that chronology in his novel "Crime and Punishment" . imho , Agatha Christie is the gold standard of whodunits and mystery fiction .
@@anonfrank546 For me, Colombo's series are about quite perfect crimes, that only him could prove, by logic, by caring about details, by psychology and by common sense. And by neglecting all outside his profession and credo, which turns into humor. Also, the actor is outstanding - in other films as well. As about Dostoevsky's "Crime and punishment", it is about more of the punishment, and about getting aware why even what seems the most approvable taking off of a live is in fact not to do. Also, that a crime usually leads to another
The two leads played in several of the Archers' films. Farrar had a terrific part as the gone-native doctor whose good looks discomfits the nuns in Black Narcissus.
A very agonizing and intense character, that Mr. Perrin. What a sad life he led. This movie was hard to watch because of that. But an excellent movie..!!
@@lilasmurray2425 Yes, the picture is premised upon multiple layers of of thematics. One of them revolves around the psychology of sexual repression and it's ramifications.
The "elderly" schoolmaster is not in fact as old as he appears. He looks old because many people, even in their 40's, in those times seem old to us now.
Brilliant movie - the claustrophobia, the fustiness, the faux pas, the embarrassment, the cringe-making, the tension, the cruelty, the bullying of men by men, the pathos. The novel was published in 1911 and is also excellent. Amazing that this movie from 1948 was able to reproduce the atmosphere from nearly 40 years earlier.
Whenever the 'new' upsets the 'old', sparks fly. I love old traditions, but you have to adapt and be flexible, or break like Perrin. TY for a good movie.
Interesting public-school movie with an unexpected twist. Maybe the media has a prejudice, but I've never seen a movie that presents them as much more than rather creepy, abusive and isolated institutions. Never seen it before; many thanks for sharing.
It was also suggested to watch, "To Serve Them All My Days." The entire Series is on RU-vid. Personally, i can't conceive of a reason to pay for a tv service while there is so much to watch on the free access RU-vid. Thank you, RU-vid. I truly appreciate you.
Yes. It could have been any other headmaster - Perrin would've been the same person. His upbringing probably had something to do with the adult he became - perhaps he missed out on the joys of boyhood: chasing girls and so on ...
Marius Goring(Mr Perrin) was approximately 38 years old and David Farrar(Mr Trail) was approximately 40 years old at the time filming. The makeup artists really new their business.
Smarmy new master "why don't you play for safety and put his leg in splints?" Modern woman from 2020 "Why don't you stop interfering in my work or I'll put you in splints mate".
Just a bit into this very fine film BUT I must say.... as well as looking to be very enjoyable.... it has all the earmarks of being the inspiration for director Lindsay Anderson's monumental achievement ".....IF" starring Malcolm McDowell, at his finest, but even more so an inspiration for the terrific BBC series "To Serve Them All My Days". Check them both out. PS - After watching... this is a wonderful film. Thanks for posting.
Read the book. They made a fine movie out of it but they didn't really capture what the book was about. If the style of writing gets in your way just grit your teeth and bear it, you will be rewarded with moments of insight and beauty along the way to a really worthwhile end.
Not many movies adhere to the true subject of books. Books are written by authors and movies are brought to life by producers. Stark difference between the two. Books are also the creation of man and his ability to tell a story if not truths while movies are made by man that capture the whims of fantasies and imagination. Good movie as movies go. I admire an old British movie.
@MansaiStuff I really enjoyed watching this film. Little has changed since this was made. Thank you very much for sharing and Happy New Year 2020 to everyone :)
Can you imagine what this film took just to make? It starts with the finest British orchestra, of course. Then, we have the huge cast, the script, the rehearsals, the buildings, the furnished rooms, the clothing, all the technicians and cameras, the coast and the sea, and all the boys and their uniforms. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. The pace was so fast, everyone rushing into the next scene. So much going on, left right and center. Were these actors paid well, I wonder? It would have been a costly film to make. And some mean-spirited lines spoken by strange looking actors. All individuals lost in their parts and acting to the hilt. It left me speechless, and now I'm not. I'm sitting here shaking my head. What on earth was that? An amazing ending where that poor man's morning bathing routine with all the stretches and cold water baths readied him for just such an occasion demanded by the script. I got quite caught up in it. I used to go to the "pictures" every Saturday morning starting in 1949 but I missed this one because I was only 5 and we hadn't moved to near the Gaumont yet. We children saw all the films during the afternoon that would be playing that evening. I paid my sixpence and watched whatever was on the screen. Enough rambling.
A good movie. The name Perrin reminded me of peregrine wax and Traill reminded me of an outdoors lover and stout person -- the one malleable the other not. Traill was also perfect for the James Bond role but too early. The last thing seen of Perrin was his teeth, almost school boy teeth, or teeth of Piggy in Lord of the Flies. I think Richard Attenborough, though maybe too young at the time, could have played Perrin too.
Loved the great wing mounted camera shot as the Lancaster streams in, tail and canons blazing pursued by both messersmits. It makes for an incredible end. Perrin turning out to be the spy and double agent. Wow! Just Wow. Can't say much so as not to be a 'Spoiler'. So 'mums the word'.
This turned out to be much darker and deeper than I expected. I was expecting a pedestrian walk through an old British boarding school and got much, much more.
Well over 23,000 views/viewers, but only 99 THUMBS UP; I'm the hundredth, of course. I wish far more viewers would click on the THUMBS UP whenever they found a very professionally uploaded video, such as this one. If more viewers spent a moment to praise the good-quality videos and criticize the butcheries on RU-vid, hopefully RU-vid/Google would reconsider its lax policies on the quality of uploads and, instead, show more concern for us viewers.... Again, thanks for this excellent-quality video!
