During her first week of kindergarten, Beth Usher had a seizure. As time passed, her seizures worsened. At the lowest point, Beth would have 100 seizures a day. Her family was frantic, searching for answers but coming up empty handed.
Yet in the chaos, there was a brief moment of relief each day. Miraculously, when Beth watched Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood, she wouldn’t seize for the show’s duration.
Eventually, her family found an answer. Beth was suffering from a rare brain disease called Rasmussen’s encephalitis. The disease only affects one hemisphere of the brain, for Beth it was her left. After much consideration, they decided the only way to get relief for Beth would be to undergo a surgery to remove half Beth’s brain, performed by Doctor Ben Carson at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland.
As Beth faced the fight for her life, her mother reached out to her hero, Fred Rogers for an autographed picture. They had no idea the lengths he would go to provide true friendship to Beth.
