Mr Straw-man declares a delusional victory

Believe in Jesus Ministries asked me to speak with this guy, MrBatman. I said I would. Then they wrote back to say:
"i just heard Mr BATMAN speak with an atheist, he didn't behave well, which i was unaware of"
To which I replied, "That won't matter. I'm used to it."
He showed up 40 minutes late, thinking he was several hours early, and (as you can see) BelieveInJesus Ministries was right about him. So I wrote back to say so:
"You were right. It didn't go well. He kept asking where the laws of the universe came from when the universe began. I repeatedly told him the universe never had a beginning, that material energy and universal wave function are both eternal; that an absolute nothingness is impossible. So something has to exist, and anything that exists has to have to have properties, and these are the properties it has to have in order to exist. Then he said, but where did those properties come from? Again I said, if it is eternal, then they didn't "come from" anywhere. After a few rounds of this, I told him that I had already corrected the first error in his premise four times yet he keeps going back to it. I told him I'm not going to correct the same error indefinitely. So there's no reason to continue.
As I was closing the browser, he said something along the lines of "turn or burn". So yeah, he didn't behave well. All he did do was cite the question-begging fallacy and tu quo quee fallacy (trying to paint my rationality as an opposing "belief system") on top of citing the already famously disproved arguments of irreducible and specified complexity. It was a nothing sandwich, a creatard 101 novice interaction of nothing but empty assertions without him having any idea of what he or I was talking about."
I went on to explain to BelieveInJesus Ministries that I was not going to make it public. The reason being that there was nothing to show. It was him saying, "you believe everything came from nothing when the universe began", and me saying, "No, I don't believe the universe began or that everything came from nothing".
This was repeated four more times over 25 minutes with a lot of other false assertions mixed in too. Since he couldn't get past the failure of his straw-man premise, there was no further we could go.
However, he seems to have recorded part of our interaction himself and uploaded a nine-minute segment of that here,
• Aron Ra vs Mr Batman
Wherein he claims to have "destroyed" me. Amazingly he thinks he somehow scored a point! He even declared victory in a discussion where one could not even have a "victory". So now I have to upload the whole discussion just to show what a nothing sandwich it really was.

"Mr. BATMAN" is an outright liar. If you do some background on him, he was never an atheist. He was swayed back into "church" by his uncle. He had stop going to church, like most teens, from 16 to 19. He also knows that his apologetics have been disproven. He refuses to accept that. I also am a substitute teacher. As a substitute, you really don't have the choice of subjects; you're given a list of preferences, but are not guaranteed placement. Substitutes are also, generally, not as educated as proper teachers. I have a B.A. of Education, with a concentration in Language Arts. I have taught biology, Math, English, Earth Science, Geography, American History, Phys. ED., Driver Ed., and a few others. I am experienced in the sciences however, I would not presume to teach physics, as my background in this subject is limited to high school Introduction to Physics. This guys "reasoning" is flawed to the point of lunacy. He should not be allowed to teach science.

This is just more of the same basic argument. that you get from all religious people. they pose a law, or theory, or a fact. but when you try to give them the answer to any of the these things. they change the subject. what they do is so predictable, that just a few minutes into the conversation, or debate, or a discussion. it circles back around to the god faulousy. without any solid, tangible, bona fide, evidence. Just a heaping helping of word salad. and the only thing you can depend on, is that they will prove nothing. it's really quite disappointing because you are hoping that they will make a point. that will give you something to ponder, but instead it's nothing again.

@Teflon Don Good strawman. Whats a nothing, and who's invoking it? Because what you described isn't even the same ballpark as what the theory to account for the current state of things existing. I mean, I agree, you are comparing a story with magic and wizards and talking animals to be on the same page as a reasoned explanation to account for the data, but sure, call scientific theory (which has competitors worthy of the name theory) something on the same page as a fairytale. Find me a scientist that asserts 'nothing' is possible and you'd actually have a point. How would you show the possibility of a 'nothing', since you're invoking it?
@MINDYOUROWNBUISINESS
@MINDYOUROWNBUISINESS 4 года назад
@Teflon Don perhaps you're not to grips with propositional logic, Don, thats something that can be remedied with some reading, its not a flaw, who wants to read boring old logic, but theres so much problematic with your statement! You're using an 'absence' to define a substance. We define things by the properties they HAVE, not by what they lack. Whats a property of a nothing? How can you have a 'prior to everything beginning'? Interestingly, I don't 'accept' the big bang model, cosmologists have alternatives, but that doesn't matter here, with the BB model, theres T(ime increments), and when it = 1 we have the inflation event, and when t=0 , there could effectively be one fragment of approaching T=1 that extends to infinity due to the nature of the singularity... or an infinite amount of 'time' in a single 'moment', paradoxically, stretching. To put a Genie (which is about as good an example of an 'intelligent supernatural agent' as any other) at the top, and without showing his magic to us but claiming that a genie 'explains' everything is the opposite of making things clear. You need to produce the genie before anyone would be justified in saying 'ok, a genie did it'. (The competition model to the 'Big Bang' includes essentially multiple 'big bangs' like bubbles at the bottom of a pot of boiling water, but you didn't ask about that) Nothing is a placeholder for a HUMAN CONCEPT of emptyness. Its not a THING we can point to that exists. This genie of yours may be in the same category?
@MINDYOUROWNBUISINESS
@MINDYOUROWNBUISINESS 4 года назад
@Teflon Don I'm sorry Don, I don't mean to insult you but you have missed my meaning entirely, and that may be my fault. First, I don't believe in the big bang, 2nd there are alternatives (essentially multiple singularitys) but I'm saying you don't quite get the meaning I meant, and you are putting what I called a genie at the top in a way that ISN'T justified. Its begging the question, its putting the cart before the horse its wishful thinking, its saying you WANT a genie to be at the top when pressed the only answer for how the supernatural works will be to abdicate responsibility in demonstrating a mechanism how. Its a NON explanation and raises more questions than you claim to think it answers. >"Life cannot arise from inanimate objects by itself naturally ..... " that is not supported by evidence. In fact we can, with water heat and sometimes light, essentially disprove that one. You appear to have difficulty believing simple life can form from chemical compounds in ideal conditions, but you're on shaky grounds to declare it impossible.
@MINDYOUROWNBUISINESS
@MINDYOUROWNBUISINESS 4 года назад
@Teflon Don Short version: No you're using a different meaning of no-thing, which I would never invoke; I'd say that to talk about a time 'before time' is non-sensical, and NO ONE can talk about that time coherently. You get it now?
@MINDYOUROWNBUISINESS
@MINDYOUROWNBUISINESS 4 года назад
@Teflon Don That doesn't work to a methodology specifically made for removing bias (science) where only what is INDICATED can be allowed. The very obvious accusation that can be that you WANT there to be a magic genie at the top of the pyramid so you're willing to jump through hoops to 'let' there be one there. You have to show there is the possibility that a god/genie/non-sentient universe creating toaster in the first place before the premise of invoking one as causal agent has any ground to stand on, and that remains an issue, possibly because there is no toaster/genie/god. > Wouldn't the supernatural fit at the top by default? I don't think you're using the same meaning of the word supernatural as me, so that could be worth discussing, but this leap isn't supported by POSITIVE data, and this moves it to the realm of fancy. It underpins the issue inherent in all other logic derived from this premise. Until you show that there IS a supernatural, and I don't think we can agree on what that word means, as I equate it as 'impossible nonsense magic' for all its power to explain things, then you have no justification for slotting it into an explanation for other things like the origins of matter. >I mean......No one has ever proved life arising from inanimate object naturally This idea is interesting! Did you know that medieval thinkers/doctors actually thought that was how mould and insects emerged? Obviously false of course, but there you go. But I can actually lead you though the concept in a way that you can understand. From the looks of it, the most important thing for life is water and energy (heat). If you want a manifestation of god, 'water' is the form most pleasing to 'him', it would seem. What life IS is a series of repeating, replicating chemical strands, in a series of stable containers that appear to have developed consciousness. Wild, I know, but not impossible to map or graph. Theres a LOT I'd have to lead you through, but if you can grasp the science of how a plant 'works', drawing energy from the sun, you're getting close to what you need for the rest of the process. Plants are TECHNICALLY very complex, just incredibly simple compared to us, so its not EASY to understand, but I think you could when you look at how clorophil cells work (taking energy from the sun), you can't deny the process at work that evidently seems to be a 'stable chemical reaction that uses (and SEEKS) reagents to maintain the ongoing reaction of converting energy and water into a slightly different form/compound. If you can grasp how plants 'work', although we are orders of MAGNITUDE more complicated, we are very inclined to see the chain that leads from plants and single-celled organisms to more mobile and complicated beings. Edit: yes you had heard of spontaneous generation, apologies. The current model has DNA emerging as a byproduct of RNA, which is self-replicating. BECAUSE although it is not alive/living, but it IS a self-replicating compound, this IS sufficient to reasonably conclude as the 'most likely' culprit of lifes origins, since once it begins to self-replicate, the chances of 'copying errors' become inevitable. No need for magic at all!

It's a storybook. a picture of the mindset of men of that time displaying their lack of understanding regarding the world around them. And a picture that clearly shows that the book is not divinely inspired by any stretch of the imagination. The men who composed the writings that collectively make up the Bible could not see beyond their little corner of the world and could not Envision that in the future people would learn these unfounded assertions had no discernible basis and that their written claims about the natural world are easily proven to be laughably false. @@Simon.the.Likeable Hi, there's a few things I want to clea rup here regarding thermodynamics: Regarding thermodynamics in general: The laws and equations in thermodynamics are homogenous and subject to superposition only in isolated systems, NOT closed systems. As a rule of thumb: Open systems allow interaction with outside matter, aswell as energy exchange with outside systems. Closed systems do not allow for matter interaction, but does allow energy interaction. Isolated systems do not allow any of those. Regarding the first law of thermodyn: The law itself doesn't really state anything about energy being "eternal" or anything, and Aron got that one a bit wrong aswell, but that's a very common misconception. The law simply states that the total inner Energy of a system remains constant and is the sum of Heat energy and Work Energy. This is because isolated systems do not allow for energy exchange, so the energy can't go to or come from anywhere. Regarding the second law of thermodyn: This one is a bit trickier since it introduces a new variable; Entropy. Generally, entropy is understood as a value for the "disorder" of a system. Now, while it sounds a bit mystical, all it really says, from a statistical standpoint, is that in macroscopic thermodynamical systems, the chance of finding a large number of particles in the exact same spot is *extremely* small. This is further affected by the amount of heat and work energy within the system. This rule does NOT apply to microscopic systems. Regarding the beginnings of the universe: While the exact mechanics are unknown, the singularity hypothesis is a bit outdated. Statistical mechanics offers a superior explanation by showcasing that massive fluctuations in entropy in local microscopic systems can spontaneously trigger a spacetime expansion, which would explain the initial low entropy state of the early universe.

Interesting. That's something to ponder... is Atheism something that must be arrived at, or is it a default position? In the future, if Humanity (hopefully) finally and fully rejects mythology, will those people be Atheists by default or are they something else? Does someone have to be presented with the concept of a deity and reject that deity before they're an Atheist?
@dienekes4364
@dienekes4364 4 года назад
@@ejcarter9 It depends on where you start. Children make up all kinds of fanciful things, but that's just the mind developing and trying to figure things out. Once a person gets past that childhood phase, it depends on their mindset and level of indoctrination growing up, so it covers the entire spectrum. I suppose I could claim to have been a "believer" when I was growing up but, thankfully, had next to no indoctrination, so it was very easy to arrive at atheism. I accepted the general concept of a "god", but wouldn't say I was a 'true christian', so hadn't really bought into it at such an emotional level that finding out I was wrong was so traumatic that I couldn't accept it. Others get so emotionally tied up in it, or are so resistant to learning critical thinking skills that it's hard for them to abandon what makes them feel good. _"Does someone have to be presented with the concept of a deity and reject that deity before they're an Atheist?"_ -- That all depends on your definition of atheist. When theists argue that they "used to be an atheist", I don't believe they are using this definition. I think what they mean is that they used to be indifferent to the concept, or they used to reject organized religion, but they never actively examined the concept of the supernatural and determined that the evidence was lacking. They try to use their indifference to religion as a false comparison to someone like us who actively seek out the pros and cons and make the conscious decision that there is no compelling evidence to support the claims. Then, once they get emotionally attached to the idea of being so special that the creator of the universe personally cares about them, or some "moral authority" just happens to have the same bigotries and prejudices that they want to embrace but are too self-conscious to openly hold on their own, they fall deeper down the hole of delusion.

"I don't understand, therefore god." Could I possibly have a hole in my argument? Naaaa, it's rock-solid.

Batdude here actually made my brain hurt. Between his smug smile, condescending "oh", and latching on to random words you said just to prompt his trite christian claptrap, I'm amazed you could keep your cool. He clearly wasn't listening but was just waiting for a chance to speak again. That is, until he got to gish galloping, at which point, he wanted you to just let him rattle off a bunch of long debunked bs without interruption, as if that would prove anything. So frustrating.
