Mr. Wong in Chinatown is a 1939 American mystery film directed by William Nigh and starring Boris Karloff. The story is about a pretty Chinese woman, seeking help from San Francisco detective James Lee Wong, who is killed by a poisoned dart in his front hall, having time only to scrawl the name "Captain J" on a sheet of paper.
---
Directed by William Nigh, produced by William T. Lackey, written by Hugh Wiley and Scott Darling, starring Boris Karloff as Mr. James Lee Wong, Marjorie Reynolds as Roberta 'Bobbie' Logan (reporter), Grant Withers as Police Capt. Bill Street, Huntley Gordon as Mr. Davidson (bank president), George Lynn as Capt. Guy Jackson (Aviation Corp. president) as Peter George Lynn, William Royle as Capt. Jaime (captain, Maid of the Orient), James Flavin as Police Sgt. Jerry, Lotus Long as Princess Lin Hwa (murder victim), Lee Tung Foo as Willie (Wong's servant), Bessie Loo as Lilly May (Princess Lin Hwa's maid), Richard Loo as Tong chief, Ernie Stanton as Burton (Davidson's butler) and I. Stanford Jolley as Hotel clerk.

Thanks for posting this classic old film. The idea is to suspend your dis-belief and just sit back and enjoy! These films were made at a simpler time in the history of cinema. If you try to pick them apart because a Caucasian is playing the role of an Asian, or the Chinese all are speaking in English, than your are missing the point. This is 1939 Hollywood. Just enjoy the old cars and San Francisco "way- back when". It's quaint and funny. Don't take it seriously. Just enjoy!

The more comments I read on these old films the more glaring is how many viewers have NO IDEA of the history of film and the circumstances of their making. And for goodness sake stop trying to apply today's standards to films that were made 70 to 80 years ago -- if you apply those same ridiculous rules to history in general you wind up with the kind of political bullshit that we are experiencing today. Grow up, PLEASE.

I have loved old movies since I was 7. We didn't always have a tv back then. I remember on Friday was when mom and dad got grocery and always a gallon of ice cream, choc syrup and we would crush chips on top. You could get a gallon of ice cream for 99 cents back then. Turn the tv on watching Charlie Chan movies, and Sammy Terry and George his spider. Sammy showed horror movies. One movie was the Screaming Skull, I could hardly watch it, even today. I don't ever remember watching Mr. Wong. I'm glad I found him on RU-vid and have watched them several times. thank you Timeless Classic Movies

For those commenting on this film's plot being reused for Charlie Chan in The Chinese Ring. They are almost identical. Karloff's Mr Wong was based on Hugh Wiley's character and the screenplay was done by Scott Darling. The Charlie Chan version was altered slightly to conform to Earl der Bigger's character: SAME screenwriter, SAME studio, poverty-row Monogram, Eight years later. Warner Bros. and Columbia did the same by reusing plots and stories, sometimes only a year apart.

Does NO ONE turn the lights on when they enter a dark room? I understand the "bad guys" wanting to stay in the dark, but even the police do not turn the lights on until after finding a body-in the dark-and stepping over the body. I see this in many of the movies. Were utility bills THAT expensive back in the day? lOL Good, fun film that uses the same script used in Charlie Chan's "The Chinese Ring". Did anyone else see the shadow behind the dwarf when he made his exit from the Princess' apartment?

these comments are soo funny lol! i've been reading tons of comments and between comments about the detective and the reporter, about half of them complain about the obnoxious loud interfering female reporter, and the other half complain about the obnoxious loud incompetent detective. look y'all, this is a 1940 cheap b movie, made for inexpensive fun entertainment and not for any type high-brow intellectualism! also, back then in movies, and later in tv, it was quite common to recycle scripts and use them as many as 4 times by simply changing a few names, locations, and minor details. folks should either just enjoy this movie for what it is or else skip it completely! personally, i love it and most movies like it. i'm an older individual and, since there was no such thing as netflix, cable, etc., when i was young, i remember this type movie being on tv at midnight fri nights or noon on sat. just for everybody who wants to complain, all the charlie chans were played by non-asians (even a swiss guy), but all asian secondary parts were played by asians (who sometimes played a different asian ethnicity than what they really were, so why don't you fuss at them for a change?). in all but the last of the mr wong movies it was the same, but in the final movie keye luke played mr wong (charlie chan's # 1 son, later had a part in 'flower drum song' - almost all asian cast btw, and shalan priest in tv's 'kung fu'). finally, peter lorie played mr moto, but actors of asian ethnicity played secondaries there as well.

I ask only because in other films and images, Marjorie Reynolds hardly resembles the amazing reporter in the two, I think, Wong films featuring Logan. Interesting movie but a disappointing one dimensional performance by Karloff. so different from the multi-layered, inspired work of Peter Lorre as Mr. Motto. Even though Lorre came to hate playing Motto, his portrayals have a depth that Karloff does not even come close to. While Karloff was a wizard with make-up, Lorre was a true genius of the actor's art.
@inurafacititia7352
@inurafacititia7352 10 лет назад
I agree with you completely except for your "true genius" description of Lorre. Although I can see perfectly what you mean by that description, and Lorre often did show an unique grasp for the "Craft" (not Art) of his acting, he tended to drift in and out from one scene to another. Lorre also drifted more Out as he aged, unlike many who seemed to grow in their craft. But I do think you're basically right and I only can complement your observations. I seldom see such well thought out ideas here on RU-vid.
@inurafacititia7352
@inurafacititia7352 10 лет назад
If you read the Wong stories you'll see that Wong and Moto were described completely differently. Karloff WAS Wong (all but one film where Keye Luke stepped in) and Lorre did the part of Motto. Wong was a 6 foot Chinese where Moto was closer to Lorre's height. Wong was a US Treasury guy where Moto was an International Cop (like Interpol).
@whiskeyriver4322
@whiskeyriver4322 9 лет назад
Although Karloff possessed a fair amount of skill as an actor, he was consistently limited by his physical attributes, and his speech impediment. Add a skid row studio like Monogram, and poor writing, and you come up with novelties like this; not to say there is not a great deal of charm and enjoyment with these popular obscurities. I actually love them; although it's hard to beat Warner Oland as Chan, or Lorre as Moto.
@michaeldanello3966

Joseph Schufle: Karloff did NOT do his own makeup. And he did a lot more than just horror films. You are so poorly informed it's not worth anyone's time to even try to educate you. But you're entitled to your own "opinion" -- good luck with it.

How odd. This is almost identical to a Charlie Chan story. Hmmm. lol

You'll find the Charlie Chan Chinese Ring story was 1947 while Mr Wong's is 1939.

Boris Karloff was nearly six feet tall, which for the time would have been an extraordinary height for a man of Chinese descent. This may explain why he stoops so much in this film; he's trying to appear shorter to make his character more realistic. On the other hand, his genteel British-inflected English seems completely out of place.

People from northern China can be quite tall.

according to the books upon which these movies are based, wong's a chinese-american (and that might mean not full-blooded chinese), 6' tall (another indication that he's probably mixed race), and yale educated. therefore, a 6' english actor's not a terrible stretch. in the final movie in this series, wong was played by keye luke. i loved that one, too, however, his physical description and speech were even less fitting than in these other movies.

I wonder why real Chinese people were not used. There was an active cinema in Shanghai with real Chinese actors.

The 1930s and 1940s didn't normally do that for these Charlie Chan, Mr. Moto, or Mr. Wong movies. Only 1 of the Mr. Wong movies has an actual Chinese man in it for the lead, Keye Luke as Mr. Wong. But that's 1 out of 58 movies (44 Charlie Chan, 8 Mr. Moto, 6 Mr. Wong) from 1931 - 1949 that actually has an Asian Lead Man in an Asian Lead Role.

A post states that Karloff had Indian heritage. That is total nonsense His father was with the British Consular Service in India. You can't get any more British than Karloff and his brothers. Try reading a bit, you'll be suprised by how much you don't know.

Per the biography "Boris Karloff: A Gentleman's Life" and other sources, his father Edward John Pratt, Jr. was Anglo-Indian, from a British father and Indian mother, while Karloff's mother also had some Indian ancestry. Try reading a bit, you'll be suRprised by how much you don't know. ;)

The plot as written above is written with very bad English composition. It indicates that Wong was killed in his front hall. Bad English and composition can be - and often is - misinterpreted by most. The next time I hope people will pay more attention in English Classes and see how a simple mistake can lead to confusion. Wars have been started by such confusions. It is better to be voiceless than to be unable to say the correct words (old Chinese saying)...

What The Hell is a Punch Board Hole?
@alvinphilmlee51
@alvinphilmlee51 2 года назад
A punch Board is (now) an antique gambling device that at one time was found in nearly every typical local bar in the '50's when i grew up. The device consisted usually of a 12" square card board about an inch or two thick with hundreds of tiny holes drilled in it. each hole was filled with a rolled up piece of paper that was either a winning ticket or a looser. The patron would push a thick pin into a hole on the board to get to the ticket creating a tiny "Punch Hole".

As hind-sight is perfect, set aside the idea of a Caucasian playing an Asian. Remember that orientals and black peoples did not get leading roles, even if the role was for them. This practice persisted into the 1980s... be glad it is presently over. Roles in continuing characters have the ability to destroy careers, think of Bond and those who have played the character.

The actor Parnell Roberts was one of the ones that fought to force the business to use Asian and black actors to play those roles.
