What are your tips and tricks to get through your MRI? And what is your MRI story?

Went in for my MRI yesterday, everything was god until I opened my eyes and saw that cage up against my face. I started to hyperventilate and began yelling for help. I kicked my legs like an upright cockroach and was able to get that pillow from underneath my legs and got out of the machine. The technician had not seen me hence they were on the other side of the glass, when they saw I was out they ran to me and asked me what happened and how I got out. All I said was I can’t do this, I need more time…they said okay and I waited in the hallway. 5 minutes later the technician said to me are you ready to try again….all I said was no way I can’t do this I need my wife. Never have I ever experienced such anxiety of being trapped and suffocated. It was a horrible moment and I don’t even recommend this to my worst enemy…that’s how bad it was. Currently looking for open MRI but seeing that the cage is used I am hesitant to try. Worst experience EVER😃

I didn't think I was claustrophobic until I went into the mri tunnel I started to freak out because the thought of not being able to sit up or move made me feel panicked I had a panic button in my hand and wanted to press it but I held my nerve enough to get through it, being told about given the injection of the drug that speeds up my heart rate also made me nervous until it kicked in and it wasn't bad at all

I can relate my experience and testify one thing as I had my first time MRI today. I went in without realising the horrer awaiting. First few seconds were horrible as I entered into the tunnel, my heart beats went sore high.. tried to call the technician to get out of it, to get mentally prepared. But by that time he had left the room. I didn't know any way to contact him. Then I realised a wonder happened to me as soon as I appealed for help, to JESUS whom I love... I became calm and was in perfect peace throughout the 30 minutes of my scanning. Then I remembered the promise of Jesus. "...and the peace of God, which surpasses every understanding, shall guard your hearts and your thoughts by Christ Jesus." Phil 4:6-7

I had mine today for my shoulder. I told myself not to think about it going in. I go into the table, they got my shoulder ready, they gave me headphones and asked what station. I said 98.1 and in I went. It was snug. I saw how close my face was to the machine and the anxiety kicked in. I immediately worked on my breathing then focused on the music. Wiggled my toes to the beat and kept saying short prayers. I tried to count minutes at first but kind of felt dizzy so I just kept on wiggling and praying. The nice tech lady said I had 9 minutes to go. I breathed and then started counting to 60. After 60 I said it’s now 8, then 7, then 6.... Before I knew it I had like two minutes left and said to myself, I got this. It was then finally over. I eased out, she helped me up. She asked if I was ok. I said that I got reacquainted with God. God said, there you are my son. I haven’t heard from you in a while.

It is reassuring to know so many others have had the same reaction. Years back I got stuck in an elevator for about 20 minutes and had an anxiety attack, but I could move, chat with others. Unfortunately, I had no idea what an MRI entailed and assumed that it was similar to a PET scan....slide in slowly, then back out, done in a few minutes. I had been given 'zero' information on the procedure. Within minutes in the MRI tube, I had a full-fledged panic attack. It was unlike anything that I've ever experienced and the feeling, hours later, was still with me. Since then I've found many ways of coping with the problem and plan to use a tranquilizer, eye mask, music and Yoga breathing techniques. Plus several people suggested lying under a bed (if it's high enough) or even using a cardboard box over your head, to practice getting used to the close space. It is as close to 'torture' as I ever want to get!
@EvenSoItIsWell

Lying under a bed! What a great idea! I had not thought of that one. And I love the box idea too. Sometimes I think just my breath hitting the walls of the machine makes me feel the confinement even more.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I had a brain tumor removed last year and have had about 3 MRI's since then and have an annual one every year that must be completed. My MRI's on average last about 45 minutes each. I too have claustrophobia and the first time I went into the machine I started to have a panic attack and squeezed the ball in about 3 minutes of being inside. To help me get through the first time, I had to really control my breathing ... taking deep breaths in and out. Another thing I did that I should not have done was I moved my chin up a bit and when my face hit the brace that was holding me in ... I realized how little space I actually had to move. An of course my arms were already rubbing against the side of the machine. This began to freak me out as well. The second MRI I did not squeeze the ball. I started to have a small panic attack but was able to control it with my breathing techniques and meditation. One of the things that really helped me was I told them to cover my face with a towel. I did not use a blanket. And the most important tip ... do not move my head so I don't accidentally touch the bracket holding me down. As long as I didn't move my head everything went well. I just had my 3rd MRI yesterday and using all of my techniques I managed to have a panic free experience. I made sure to keep my head still the entire time and I had motivational mindset youtube videos playing in the headphones. (ie: Les Brown). I hope some of these tips are able to help you all in the future.

Thanks so much for sharing - you helped me immensely! My tips are gathered from researching videos like this one (plus one of my own :) 1. Do you research on claustrophobia and realise that you are not actually in any danger - it’s just a temporary inconvenience 2.take a sedative 30 mins before your scan - definitely helps to calm your nerves 3. Wear an eye mask - put it on as you are laying down (and keep your eyes closed) 4. My suggestion - pretend you are in a nightclub and the buzzing, beeping, alert type sounds are actually DJ samples playing just before the music kicks in! Add your own drums, bass, guitar and the like. My first MRI was a disaster, but with the above tips the second MRI (2 days later) was a breeze and they made the time fly by!

@@jesseaguinaga2789 PLEASE!!!! Don't feel ashamed. I didn't think I was gonna freak out either. I went for a 2 hour MRI. I had a contraption over my face that was about one inch from my nose. I wasn't even given headphones or a button to push if I needed help. Everything was fine when I started. I was not even thinking about being afraid of being claustrophobic. All of a sudden, about 30 minutes into my session, I started to feel hot and short of breath. The feeling came from out of the blue. I said to myself, "You're fine. You can breathe." I kept saying that to myself, but my brain screamed, "GET OUT NOW!!!" I had to yell to the technician, who was in the next room, to get me out. When she came into the room, she asked what was wrong. I told her that it felt like I couldn't breathe. She said, "Yes you can. You're alright." She said that I only had about 25 minutes left of the first MRI of the 2 that I was getting. After a couple minutes, still being in panic mode, I said ok. When she left back out and resumed the test, I tried to tell myself that I was ok and to think of something pleasant. Didn't work. Then I started singing songs in my head. Didn't work. Then I started praying. Didn't work. After about 5 more minutes, I started yelling for her to get me out!!! She came in and released me. She seemed mad at first. I told her that I was sorry for wasting her time and that I had no idea that I would panic the way I did. She relaxed and said it happens a lot. She said that I needed to take doctor prescribed sedatives. I had to reschedule. I made sure to call my doctor for meds trying to reschedule. He prescribed me 2 Valium tablets. I was to take one 40 mins before my MRI and then the other 5 mins before. I did as my doctor said and made sure to cover my eyes with a small dark towel so I couldn't see how close the machine was too my face. I was still afraid, but about 10 mins after my second Valium, I fell asleep on the table and was able to complete the MRI's.

Same. Writing this in 2020, now a face mask DURING the MRI is required and I can’t bring a ‘support buddy’ to help hold my ankle - double whammy of facing fears. What works for me is - no additional cloth over my eyes, and I don’t like the blanket (I don’t want anything on me in case I need to manually escape this machine, lol but seriously :/ ). I find videos on how MRIs work, others sharing their experiences and even listening to the sounds of MRIs via RU-vid videos help prepare me. While in the machine, I count. Counting seems to be more calming then trying to force myself to think of puppies and happy thoughts. Part of me considers becoming an MRI tech to help people not feel so alone or embarrassed when they have a hard time.

Just know that feeling claustrophobic during an MRI scan is normal and the radiographers know what to do if you feel unable to continue. You won't be made to feel stupid. I had to have a 40 minute scan last week and survived the experience. Remember that being asked to stay still during the scan does not mean that you should not breathe normally.

Thank you for sharing your story. I had my first MRI on Monday. I had no idea what to expect, never had any signs of claustrophobia before, zero history of panic attacks and I was almost in tears when they stopped my exam 10 minutes in. I'm going back next week with some valium but, I'm worried the trauma from my first experience will override the meds. I feel lots better hearing that it helps you enough to get through it.

Blindfold! Blindfold! Blindfold! I just had my first MRI. 30-45 minutes. I thought I was going to be fine. Never has an issue with claustrophobia, but I’ve never been forced into a small space before either. As soon as the tech started to slide me into the machine I opened my eyes and saw how close I was to the machine walls and started to get anxious. Luckily the tech needed to make an adjustment, change pillows, and he slid me back out. I started to take deep breaths to calm myself down. The tech noticed that I wasn’t looking too good. I agreed and told him I’d need to keep my eyes closed during the entire process, so he offered me a blindfold. It made a huge difference for me. For some reason there was also a fan blowing on my head which made me cold and dizzy. I ended up getting the cold sweats, so I just concentrated on the music and my breathing and I stopped feeling dizzy and stopped sweating. I actually almost feel asleep after the tech turned the fan down. My hands got extremely numb from having to stay still. I think for me it was more a fear of not being in control of myself than a fear of enclosed tight spaces.

I went for my first MRI yesterday. I have a strange painful “lipoma” on my left shoulder that the doc wants to look at. I’ve had ct scan and other tests before so I didn’t think that an MRI was a big deal. I was WRONG! I had to have an IV for contrast dye as part of MRI. I lasted about 4 minutes in that tube. I absolutely could not do it. I called the doc and they gave me an prescription for diazepam and upon reading and hearing of side effects I am refusing to take it. I have to go back 7/17. I think I would rather live with the pain in my shoulder , and better than that it seems like I’m having the identical issue in my right shoulder. I’m not good as the patient. I don’t like IV’s or needles or feeling claustrophobic as I am very much so with learning my reaction to this situation. Your video Wes really good. You’re obviously a kind and understanding lady. Thank you for sharing your experience. I don’t think I’m going to go through with it. I’ll deal with the pain.

I am so grateful for that I have found this channel. I have to get annual MRI due to my Medical condition (Multiple Sclerosis). And like many of you I am also struggling with getting them. I remember my first time getting a MRI I didn’t even know what to expect. All I remember was hearing the noise and the vibrations I began to cry and panic. I panicked so much that I almost caused my stomach to activate (if you know what I mean) so I had to stop in middle of the test and left crying. The following year I told my doctor if I had to take the test I need to be on something to help my nerves. So I was given a prescription for the same medication. So up until now I no longer take the medication but how prepare for the test I listen to the sounds of the very medicine, I started to recall the sound when I am in it, I as ask for a blindfold to help cover my eyes. I have a test coming up in a couple of weeks I going so if I can get earphones that can play music. One thing I get really early in the morning so I can go back to sleep. 😂 I want to thank you all who commented on this post because it helped me to know I am not alone.❤ take care🙂

I don't have a problem with the MRI as far as claustrophobia. It is the noise and not moving for so long. The place I go now does have music even for the brain part. I just close my eyes and sing along in my head. I do have issues right after from lying for so long. I tend to fall backwards if they pull me up too fast. Vertigo is the culprit. Great to see you 😊

I had one or two panic attacks in 2020, and I'm very new to them. And yesterday night I took a bus to travel between cities and it's a sleeper bus. So you have tiny beds. Unfortunately I got the last row and the window was blocked by a poster from the outside, as well as my bed was super small in height because it was the last row just above the rear wheels of the big bus. One hour into the journey I could not breathe, I felt I was trapped inside a tiny tube made of rock, I poked my head out of my seat to see others but everyone had curtains to their seats and all I could see were white curtains. I lost it then and there and I ran to the driver and asked him if I could sit in the assistant seat next to the driver compartment area. He understood that I was having a panic attack and we were in the middle of no where and even if I wanted to go back there are no towns in this route. He tried to calm me down and I rode next to the driver in the assistants seat and I somehow made it home. This was the worst panic attack ever and Ive only started having them since last year. I don't know why and I don't know how to control them.

So, I built a small tube at home with outside half circular foundation covers. I lay in it some. I will take meds this time. 10 mg diazepam. I have pre-planned anchor thoughts and music to hum through. I may put cloth over my eyes. Was told not to sing because of movement. I have delayed this but its time. Thank you for sharing. This machine makes someone who is NOT claustrophobic become claustrophobic. I took my very first MRI yesterday and it was horrible. I'm sure most people that open their eyes and see the ceiling at 12 cm from their face would panic....and for the cervical spine they add some sort of plastic cage on top of your face. I don't understand why hospital don't automatically buy the semi-open MRI. I'm average size and I felt squeezed so it must be even harder for men. This machine was build by engineers without considering the patient.
@EvenSoItIsWell
@EvenSoItIsWell 3 года назад
I know right? I wish it could be different. The reason they add the cage is that it is actually a coil to get a better images which in the end is better for us. I did also consider the open MRI too until my doctor explained that the T3 machine also gives better images and she will be better able to see my lesions (or lack there of) on the results to be able to treat my MS better so I struggle through them. Thanks for commenting!

I have mild claustrophobia and hate getting MRIs. Ugh, especially the longer ones feel like they take forever. And we only have the tubes here, no other options. I've tried meds, but they don't really work on me. So, I just basically pray my way through it and also try to laugh (inside, of course) at certain things. Just listening made my heart start racing. I am about to have another MRI. I have had several and used relax and meditate that have worked. However, I had a TIA last month and when I was put into the machine I totally had a full blown Panic attack. I tried to tell them and no reply, I had no ball, no air was blowing, and it was a closed machine. I started screaming and hitting the machine. Still no reply I actually had to start moving my head and thought if I'm not still they can't get the MRI. That worked!!! The man came in turned on the air and pulled me out. I was shaking he pushed me down and held me down. Started telling me I wasn't going back upstairs until I got back in the machine and got it finished. I was now crazy shaking and crying. They wanted to drug me up. I said NO. The nurse that took me to the test came back and helped me out of the machine and told me I didn't have to continue!! The guy that had (abused) me was like "No No it is all up to you it is your choice" He changed his toon. I couldn't even look at him. I just wanted out of that room. I've been calling around looking for a place to get the next one done. I think I found one. The lady was very nice and explained everything they will do to help me. Both ends are open. I will also have some drugs to help with a panic attack. this was good to hear. Thank you for sharing.

I just had my MRI a couple of days ago and like all of you, I thought I was brave and "had this." The tech asked me if I needed to pee, I didn't but once she brought it up, my bladder would not let me forget that 'I refused' after I was in the machine and strapped in, of course haha. 17 minutes seemed like an even loooonger time after that!! Actually 20 because they had to do the last 3 minutes twice. The ladies were nice, they knew I was somewhat claustrophobic because that's what I wrote. This machine confirmed that yes, I am....claustrophobic. I was not looking forward to it but the whole time I was in there, my anxiety kept trying to crawl in, and like some of you, I spent this precious time praying to God because I was doing everything in my power to not squeeze that little ball. The MRI in itself was torturous so I did not want to have to go through the entire process over again so help me God, I was not squeezing that little ball. And great news, I made it! I survived my first MRI. And also while laying in there, I was also thinking to myself in between praying, "now wouldn't that be great if the amber lights were just as long as these seconds?" (HAHA) However, I hope do not have to ever do an MRI again and I just wanted to share my experience and tell you that I think you are very brave to have to do one annually. And I never thought that I would ever be so happy to hear these words ever, "you are done." Also maybe if they had a timer in there counting down, that would help ease the anxiety for some because at least then you can focus on that and it is something that we know and comforting that may make it seem like we are in somewhat partial control, because the woman giving me the countdown helped calm me a bit when she let me know of 17 minutes to go, 12, 5 mins to go, 3 minutes. etc. Blessings! Take care and stay safe everyone!

I had an MRI done and I almost panicked when I was at the end. The machine was so close to my body and in my face that I felt like I was trapped. I started to panic but I try to get myself to calm down. The only thing that got me through was I seen this very small little hole on the right side of my head and I focus on the small window saying that I was OK that got me through the MRI. I thought I was the only one but I See hundreds of comments. I’m never going back into the closed ones. Either they sedate me or go on an open ended one.

I went in yesterday... They put the IV in... Then informed me no sedation was ordered. This was somewhat of an emergency, and I could not back out. I had to be face down with my right arm up in a vice. I cried uncontrollably the entire 40 minutes. I entered some kind of other world... I don't know how I made it without passing out. I have anxiety disorder and moderate claustrophobia. When the two get together, they can morph into a full-blown panic attack. For those who do not suffer from panic attacks, there's no way to explain what happens. For those who suffer from severe panic attacks, no explanation is needed. I have had several MRIs over the past ten years and early on they had the old green machines with a tube just big enough to squeeze me in. I had to be inserted all the way into the machine even for a brain scan and had to be sedated to endure the procedure. As the years went by, the machines got larger and truly open MRI machines were introduced. No more tubes - except for me because of the type scan my neurologist wanted. But the tube is larger, and I only have to be about halfway in the machine. But I still have to be mildly sedated.

I have both claustrophobia and cleithrophobia. I came across a nurse who lacked empathy. he shouted at me next to my wife telling me to either get in the mr machine or get out. I was so stressed that I couldn't say anything. I was just staring into the hole of the machine with blank eyes. The mr shoot took 50 minutes. They didn't give me any headphones or something. I lasted for 20 minutes, after which my hands, arms, and whole body began to tremble. Then I couldn't stand it anymore and I started crying. But I managed to stay 50 minutes until the end. When I got out my body was shaking even more. Myr hands trembled so much and my jaw trembled and locked. After I walked out of the room, I cried in the open air, took a fresh air and relaxed. I suffered a lot.

When I get an MRI I make sure to close my eyes as soon as I lay down on the table. I keep talking to myself and breathing. I make sure not to open my eyes at any time. I just recently had some strange symptoms, heels were numb, arms and legs were very weak and heavy. Anytime I walk, do dishes, take a shower...I would have to rest.when I look at MS symptoms, I see a lot of similarities, even things I have dismissed over the years. I am 52 now. I can't get into a neurologist until November. It is going to be a long 5 months.

I had my first MRI scan today and although i don't generally get claustrophobia in small rooms, anything that restricts my movement, particularly when laying down makes me very anxious. (i got stuck in a sleeping bag, in a small tent once after i tied it shut with my head etc inside and i've never been the same since) They gave me some medication to sedate me but apart from that i just had to press through. I was a bit dizzy from the anxiety as i initially went in and was starting to panic, but i closed my eyes and just imagined i was on a beach, laid down looking at the sky listening to the waves and it took the edge off enough for me to complete it.

I have the same issue. The small space does not bother me as I can rationalize to myself that I am not stuck but I cannot lay on my back for 30-40 minutes and not be able to move. I actually have the same anxiety if I'm on road trip or in a plane. I don't like being restricted on my ability to move around. Plus, MS and pregnancies have wrecked my bladder so add nerves on top of it and I can't get through the MRI without taking a restroom break. Before adding the contrast they usually let me break for the restroom. I had to do all 3 MRIs this year and still haven't managed to get in for the brain scan. I may need my Dr. To prescribe something before I go

I sent you a comment by email response. But I finally did get my 3T MRI. The second time I was able to do it. Meds helped a little. I built a smaller model at home to practice and that helped since the real machine was larger and I was better prepared. I also had anchor thoughts of large areas like a lake with geese flying in from afar! I listened to my own music from my CD which helped distract me. Thank you for all of your thoughts and comments. By the way I built my model using those half circled metal foundation vent covers available at construction stores. I built them up about 7 inches on each side. Just put my head in, not my whole body. Got 3 vent covers. Good luck.

The Dr was concerned I had a stroke because I woke one morning that my left side of face felt droopy. I could hardly talk or eat but went away after 2 days. I’ve had MRI’s years ago before & never panicked but this time I did & went in 4hrs ago. Im a big guy & my back hurts. I’ve had 2 back surgeries. The cage over my face was tight & in the tube was tight. I couldn’t stay there for 20 minutes & squeezed the button as fast as I could. I came out sweating & I’m still panicking right now. I would of been fine if it wasn’t for my back hurting or the tightness I felt on my face & sides. They told me to contact my Dr & he might subscribe something to relax me while having it done. I called & the nurse will tell him. Only way I can have it done is with a bigger machine.

I had no idea about the noises which sounded like machine guns... I had no idea about how small and cramped I would be because no one explained it to me.... I just went like a lamb to the slaughter and the ironic part of it is I am not claustrophobic, so I thought well it's tight in here but I'll be okay.... 10 minutes into it, I started getting nervous and I had taken a Xanax pill before I went in.... when I get nervous I have to move and I knew I could not move at all... So I started to say the rosary.... Then came the machine guns.... that's when the Panic started to mount... I managed to stay in without squeezing the ball but as far as the rosary goes, the only thing I could think of was Jesus Jesus Jesus Jesus Jesus Jesus.... it was torturous and when I finally did get out I asked the technicians if Hitler invented the MRI and I made them all laugh and I swore I would never get in one of them again.... but I had to get in then because I did and still do have MS but now I can go in one that's a little wider but I'm used to them by now but I never ever look forward to them! Luckily, the dog started barking not long after and my mom pulled me out. After that, I always avoided restrictive spaces I couldn't control the exit of, and repressed the memory, feeling crawly skin watching people crawling in tight spaces in movies, etc. I would have an occasional nightmare of being trapped in a dark box half-filled with water with just my tinnitus for company for eternity, I would wake up always in a split second when they happened. I was diagnosed with MS in 2019 and had MRI’s in the hospital, but not as many as my doctor had me do this year. I went this year for the brain, C-spine and T-spine. The doctor asked if I could lay still for 3 hours and I bawked and said no. I divided them into 2 appts. The first one was the brain and I had taken 1.5 of my own anxiety medicine so I wouldn’t need a driver, like I would for taking Valium. I wasn’t able to have headphones cause the cage and everything didn’t leave room enough. But I talked myself through it and did fine. THEN fast forward a couple of days later…I felt accomplished so I only took 1 anxiety pill thinking I was a pro. Well, they pushed me into the machine and I realize that my arms are scraping the top and I felt much squished. I felt like I was going to be stuck, and panic set in. I had a cough drop in and I felt like I was going to suffocate on the cough drop…I had the rush of warmth and started squeezing rapidly to be taken out. The technician was very kind. I was like I don’t understand why I’m in there so much more cramped. She explained that I was propped up more so they could get the spine images and she had put extra cushion around my head. She removed the extra cushions and just having the knowledge of “why” it felt smaller helped. I was in there for an hour and a half after that. I had to remind myself that I was OK, I was NOT stuck, and I could ask her to pull me out again at any time. I had to remind myself over and over, but I made it. Next time I think I’ll go for the wide boar and pop the Valium!

upright open mri is good option for brain mri and for all other lay flat mri a blindfold is key (practice wearing one at home). you may need to travel to another state to find upright mri.

At age 23 I was in the emergency department for trouble breathing (had a blood clot at the time, have a clotting disorder and they wanted to rule out a PE) so they had me go for a CT scan and 2 days later I get a call that they found a thyroid nodule and a rather large (6.6cm x 5.2cm) lesion on my liver and that I'd need an MRI for further diagnosis. Fast forward a month I got one, it was the same closed kind you went in and I did okay for the most part considering I have panic disorder and panic attacks are a part of my life, but I did squeeze the ball once and was told we only had 10 minutes to go so I tried my hardest to get through it and I did. Didn't help that they had to lay something on my abdomen and chest area which made it harder to breathe but whatever. 2 days later I got the results that it was likely what is called an FNH (Focal Nodular Hyperplasia) and that a repeat MRI with the contrast Eovist was reccomended to confirm the diagnosis. My first thought? Oh no. Not AGAIN. But at the time I was told it was a small chance of it being a hematoma and that would be dangerous so I just HAD to do it. I take xanax for my anxiety and panic attacks and let me tell you, 7 months later when the repeat MRI came around, they did NOTHING to calm me. I took 2!!! I was even told that I'd be scanned in an open MRI and that it would help my anxiety, so I was less hesitant coming in for the scan. Low and behold, I walk into the scan room and it's a standard MRI :) it was "Open bore". I was not happy. But no turning back, I was here so I might as well just get it done. I was 24 at this time. This one actually wasn't as bad as I didn't have the heavy thing on my abdomen like last time and my head was outside of the back of the scanner so I could see the ceiling compared to me being totally inside the first time around. My heart rate rose but I didn't feel a total panic attack. I was proud of myself. But that didn't last long, I'm on a beta blocker because I have POTS and also tachycardia from my panic disorder, and unfortunately a side effect of beta blockers is nightmares (I'm on atenolol). Later that night and for the next 4 months straight I had constant nightmares. I have no idea why I developed such a phobia of MRIs. I never considered myself claustrophobic until I had them, and if anything what bothers me the most is the noise! I'm a tonally sensitive person and always have been, to where even as a kid and to some extent even now, things like emergency alerts send me into a panic attack. They along with the MRI noises are just downright creepy!!! I have no idea how anyone can call them relaxing nonetheless fall asleep in them 😭 I'm now 25 and I have to go for a brain MRI now as I have suffered migraines since kindergarten. The 2 MRIs I described were not my first either, I had one in middle school which creeped me out a bit at the time but I didn't have panic attacks at that age (I'm guessing I was 11?) and another I had in 2017 which I don't even remember having, but that's the basis for why I'm due for another. Apparently they found what they think is a cholesterol granuloma and my neurologist just decided to tell me a few months ago about it and how he wants me to get another MRI to follow up on it. Today he ordered an MRI with anesthesia because I told him about my nightmares and panic attacks from the previous ones so hopefully that will help... I hope it's not just sedation via pill because that NEVER helps me. I would assume anesthesia means being totally knocked out. But we shall see. Sorry for the long story, it feels good getting this out there and I really really sympathize with you and your story so thank you for sharing it!

Thanks for sharing your story! I am proud of you too for being able to make it through your MRIs. I am totally with you on the noise. I do not understand how people fall asleep in there. I recently had a comment from another viewer where they shared that the sounds reminded them of an 80s or 90s rave! Lol! I am so glad they have ordered anesthesia for your next one. Definitely call ahead of time to find out what kind. You might just get that lovely nap yet!

So this one is a bit counterintuitive, but it helps me get through these types of moments: So normally, when you are on the brink of a full panic attack, or on the brink of fainting somewhere, or going through a painful procedure, or going through severe pain because of something else, often you start thinking "O it's only a few more minutes. Just hold on a few more minutes". But that, for me, has the effect of sprinting and being really close to a finish line: by the time you're almost at the finish line, you are /done/. Instead, I make myself believe that it is not going to be over yet for a long time. It will be over at some point, but I've just gotten started. There's still hours/days/weeks to go (depending on what I'm trying to push through). And somehow that tricks my brain into believing that I'm just at the start of it. And because usually the bad part is the end, if I make myself believe that the end is actually the beginning, I'm more likely to be OK. And I'll even have moments that, when the thing is actually over, I'm like "oh already?". After that I'll be completely exhausted, but it works. At least for me.

Epic fail with Open MRI yesterday. I've had 9 MRI's in the last 14 years due to spinal issues, all regular machines. I'm closterphobic, currntly about an 8 on a scale of 1-10 but used to be alot less severe. Yesterday, I tried a open-lying down MRI to look at my neck area. NOPE! I lasted 2 mins and pressed the button. I felt like such a woose as this was an open one! I rescheduled as this company has a stand-up Open MRI 😊 and I'm going to take something to relax me. I truly believe my claustrophobia has gotten worse with age and I don't know if I can ever do a regular MRI ever again. 🙃

It was crazy and just the thought of counting the minutes.....was crazy ..!!! For my last MRI I was in my sixties in age. I honestly feel it's silly not to be able to just sit still & get the MRI done, but..... something in brain takes over and I get so anxious I have panic attacks really severely. So for the last MRI my doctor wanted to make sure I felt nothing anxious at all about being in the MRI machine, so he gave me 2 Ativan pills about 45 minutes before the MRI was to start. Then about 15 minutes before the MRI he had me take 1 more Ativan, I am overweight so maybe that's why he went to 3 pills total. I remember getting on the table, and don't remember one thing after that, I kind of went to sleep I guess. ha! I tried an open MRI machine once & even it was horrible for me. I can't explain why it bothers me so much but I will never get into a MRI machine without plenty of medication. ha!! Hope things get better with you. I see the word Multiple Sclerosis listed next to your name, based on your age it appears you are one of the lucky people that can handle the disease pretty well. It affects people so differently from person to person. My brother died of MS at the age of 56. His disease was terrible, he was bed ridden the last 5 years of his life, I hated the day he passed but I was so glad he didn't have to endure the pain anymore. I know other people with MS much older than him and they do very well, you keep that up too! Take care.

Thanks for watching and commenting. I use medication for each MRI now too. I get them at least once a year. Yes, I have MS but I am doing well still. I am sorry you lost your brother to the disease. It can be such a difficult disease.
