Your enthusiasm for this book is contagious. Unraveling this multi-layered story sounds like a wonderful way to spend several hours. (Haha! When I saw the title, “Mrs. March”, I thought someone has written a novel about Marmie March, the mother of Little Women.)
I really enjoyed this book, and I really loved the "timelessness". At times I felt that it was set in the current, day, but then other moments (the gloves, the cigarette case, etc.).
I just finished Mrs March based on your review. I loved it. I was on the edge of my seat. I can’t recall a book I have read that takes place entirely in the character’s mind. Like you, I was having trouble placing the time of the book. The closest I came was she was playing music at her party that included Anna Maria Alberghetti who was popular in the late 1950s-early 1960s. The inconsistency was that Mr March’s older daughter admonished her for not working which was very common in that time frame. This book read like a Hitchcock movie. I could not put this book down! Thank you for bringing it to my attention or I might have missed it! I can’t believe the author lives in Spain. She certainly has the New York sensibility.
I had lost my reading "mojo" for a long while now; however, NOW after your review of this book - I'm totally back to craving "words". The way you review books and the words and emotion you use to describe situations is amazing! I'm going back to watch the podcasts that I missed during my "dark" period. Now I feel like I definitely have some catching up to do. Thank you, Thank you! As always, you are an amazing book reviewer!! Hugs!
I already had the audiobook on hold at the library but then I watched your video followed by a virtual event with the author being interviewed by Samantha Irby & I had to order a physical copy of the book. I can’t wait to get to it!!
I saw your goodreads star rating and review to follow and thought I was going to have to wait to hear what you thought. So happy this popped up in my feed. This book sounds just amazing. They were talking about it on All The Books podcast this morning and I was hooked. Now I’m doubly hooked. 10 week wait at the library though. Ah well, good thing I’ve got a huge pile of books here. Have a lovely week.
I picked up the book when I saw the thumbnail for the review ( perhaps I should have watched the video before purchasing but after watching your trash your fiction book shelf series, I perceived I would be interested in something you were interested in ). I loved the book, and the review provided was bang on.
Thanks for the excellent, thorough review! I am somewhat intrigued/repulsed by the book description (repulse is too strong a word). But first, I have a non-fiction on my TBR that you recommended; the one about the octopus! Cheers!
Hi Olive, Great review as usual. I guess this book would be termed psychological fiction. I’m not sure I can handle the subject matter but I’m very tempted. I also wanted to say that your Eloquence is quite breathtaking. I stumble over my words and believe it or not, I used to act on stage. Your review exudes clarity . Aloha
I just finished this book and felt frustrated because I wanted to know more. Like you I wished they gave us more about the book and the son. Looking forward to the possible movie though.
