This is such a perfect movie moment. After years of utter neglect and abuse, Celie gets the most beautiful song sung to her and she finally feels like she exists! Wow. Powerful moment
+PoshMillyT truly a shame that Whoopie didnt contiue this level of acting - she was just stunning in every moment of htis film...Speilbergs team truly out did the casting of this
This scene made me tear up. Shoutouts to Shug for putting some respect on Celie’s name. This was the most love Celie has gotten since Nettie left years ago. Shoutouts to Sofia as well. She acknowledges Celie’s presence and she was the admiration Celie needed to get the guts to read Mister for filth.
She was was in complete need she combed her hair cared for her well she was down and counted out almost died and She came to her aid and helped her I don't have any sisters but obviously you don't have any good friends because you would know
Theboss 4402 lol you’re a little rude. It’s called Ebonics hunny.. and she explained it, if you need a better elaboration then asking would be better response. To reiterate what was just said... “ailing” she was referring to when she would tend to her. Combing her hair, “leaving scratches”
sang this to my lil sister at her bridal shower.... she helped me when I didn't believe in myself. i wanted her to know she is strong and beautiful like our mother raised us.
This scene always gets me! It’s deeper than 400 years of oppression, of systematic genocide, and of hate, of a system always putting us against each other. No matter what period in time, it all comes down to this, you will always be my sister.
My love goes to you. My best friend Carmen Hendrix died in murder suicide in Miami. We had a relationship like Kim porter and ebony. I’m heart broken was never the same! I pray!!! It’s not good a good feeling at all. Hole in my heart. Death after death pray for the darkness to go away!!! Praying you we will get through this!!!
A special woman once sang it to me and I've left it too long to listen to again...I'm sorry you lost your sister and I hope you have a wonderful year this year.x
Sister, you've been on my mind Sister, we're two of a kind So sister, I'm keepin my eyes on you I betcha think I don't know nothin But singin the blues Oh sister, have I got news for you Im somthing I hope you think that you're somethin too Oh, Scufflin, I been up that lonesome road And I seen a lot of suns goin' down Oh, but trust me No low lifes gonna run me around So let me tell you somethin sister Remember your name No twister, gonna steal your stuff away My sister We sho ain't got a whole lot of time So shake your shimmy, Sister Cause honey the shug is feelin fine🎶🎶
I think it was more of an apology for being so mean to her in the beginning. Shug just didn't realize the true nature of Celie until this point & this was her way to say "I'm sorry & you are worth somebody"...all imo
My favorite part is when everybody turns to look at her in the beginning and she feels so extremely uncomfortable about fainting her chair so the singer turns to the side to look the other way so everybody can look back at her for a little bit. I'm telling you this is the best scene in any movie I've ever seen. The detail that goes into it that most people would miss. And what a sweet thing to do for someone That never felt an ounce of value their entire life
my grandmother god rest ger soul use to watch this movie all the time with me when this part came on we would sing together now every time I hear this song I sing and cry with a joy makes me think of all the good times
Just watched this film for the first time ever yesterday, and I was so taken aback by how beautiful it was. The women just... glowed. They shined. It made me feel so many things, and it gave me such an empowering perspective on African-American women. So strong. So beautiful. I wish my culture appreciated our women in general, but colorism and sexism still exists in my country. I am trying to just absorb the power African-American women went and continues to go through. You women are so beautiful.
The only nice thing my mother ever did for me was show me The Color Purple when I was 8 years old. I cried so hard when it was over, even hours after we watched it. I really understood it, and it touched my soul
Same here I was 7 and I even knew the meanings and felt them in my soul as a black female. It was the 80’s. We took my grandma to the movies to see it for her birthday. About 10-15 of us. One of the main memories I have of my grandma. coming from the deep south even a child could feel this in their soul especially a black child. That oppressive spirit is passed down unfortunately. The 80’s was a unique period just a few decades since civil rights but a new found freedom. The grandmas and pawpaws were still worn down from the past and we got to see it. We are in our 40’s now. So when they try to tell me anything about get over it. I just 😒and call em a 🤡
It would seem so Daniel. Although 'Out of Africa' was a wonderful movie and did very well at the academy awards that year.... 'The Color Purple' had really tough competition. But I have always maintained the film should have received the recognition it deserved. My only criticism was the watering down of the love affair between Miss Celie and Shug ..its was far more intimate in the book.. Again..Hollywood shying away from something they considered too controversial for the majority of cinema goers back in the 1980s.
+Darren--many people don't even realize the relationship between Shug and Miss Celie. Kudos to you and anybody else who actually read the book! Although the movie was beyond excellent, it did shy away from certain subject matter simply because it made mainstream America uncomfortable at that time. The Broadway version currently playing does not shy away from the relationship between the two women. For some who haven't read the book or picked up on clues in the movie it came as a bit of a shock. One woman behind me even gasped and got up and left during the performance I saw last night. SMH at such closed minded people.
Darren Curtis-Small But you also have to keep in mind that many great scenes in many movies end up on the cutting room floor. Not because they don't like the scenes, but because they couldn't fit in in, or felt it was redundant, went on too long, etc.
@@aces985 no they're not. I think when Shug was calling Celie "sister" and serenading to her, she was basically calling Celie her friend and telling her she's worthy of being noticed and being strong. In the book, they actually become lovers. The filmmakers didn't include that part of the story in the movie since they were already "pushing boundaries" as it is. Such a shame, since it adds so much more to the story. After this scene it's implied that something happened between Shug & Celie, as Celie says herself, "Shug like honey, and now I's just like a bee. I's follow her everywhere. Want to go where she go." Shug (besides Nettie) has been the only person to show her kindness and love.
Lately I've been feeling a bit down because of the way some people have been treating me. Whenever I get too upset, I remember Celie's strength and perseverance. It never fails to make me feel a little bit better.
@@mzmissy9591 sister.what other people think about you should be ignored, they are not aware of your story. And what they think doesn't matter, do the best you can with what you know and when you know more do better, words hurt so prove them wrong Je3es a big Ole hug your okay cause God don't make no junk
This has to be the best scene in that movie I think. Mature bonding between one very strong woman who wishes she could give some of her strength to this other gentle lady.
I agree Whoopi should have recieved an Oscar for this movie as it shows how broad her range of believability reaches - i cry everytime i see it... I am not much for comedies, but I have watched and enjoyed many of whoopi's movies Would be nice to see her in more serious movies like the colour purple
@@c.a.greene8395 I don't care for the comedies much, just like with Robin Williams, who was an excellent dramatic actor. Drama is where Whoopi shines, as did Robin.
This movie is by far my favorite of all time. I love the way Miss Celie and Shug came together. Shut taught her to value herself and dream beyond her situation. Very powerful movie. Amazing actors. Love it!
I wasn't paying attention when they said it in "20 Feet from Stardom", I thought Tata was just singing "God Is Trying to Tell you something" to demonstrate her own voice. I didn't know they were saying she was actually singing voice for Shug Avery. Although for the record, Margaret Avery can sang!!! So I don't know why she wasn't allowed to actually sing in the movie
As many times as I’ve watched this when I was younger, I didn’t understand it until I got older. Ms Shug was so sweet to do that for Celie.....imagine how important and loved she felt in that moment! It just warms my heart. And it also shows you how much Mister was fixated on making her miserable and low because the look of disgust on his face in this beautiful moment shows what kind of person he is.
I’m a 41 yr old man and I often cry when I see this movie. How on earth it didn’t win one of the 11 Academy Awards it was nominated for is a criminally negligent cinematic homicide! 🤬
@@devvywevvy222 I haven’t seen the new one. Once I saw the first few tidbits of the new one, I was shocked to see the cast. Shug really makes the movie what it is. Everyone is drawn to her like bees to honey. She’s the life of the party. I’m not a casting director, but the original Shug, Margaret Avery, was perfect for the part. When she was in character, she walked and talked like a woman of the night who sang the blues and drank her heart away. You really have to find the character and stay in character to make the movie work.
lol I am pretty sure Color Purple is officially a high school movie. A long with Glory and The Great Gatsby and some of the best american hollywood films
+Valarie Greene my brother actually named me...when I was born he was 6 and my parents used to sit down and watch this with my siblings. I'm truly blessed
This scene just makes me cry every time - after years of feeling like a nobody, that has nobody, Shug becomes her friend and her ally and sees her for the strong and great person Celie is.
The tables really turned; In the beginning she insulted Celie, called her names and by the end of the movie, Shug had become her Angel and they became so close! Can Never get tired of watching this movie!!!!!!!
I love these two comments for blatantly pointing out their romantic and sexual relationship 💀 I see a lot of people trying to casually not mention that part of the story
This was the last thing my sister and I watched b4 she passed in 2001. I always come here to reflect. I feel like she speaks toe through this song. Rip TELA bug
My younger sister passed suddenly two years ago, and so many things in the relationships between women in this moving make me think of her. We think of them all the time because we love them so much, and just like Nettie was with Celie in her mind and heart the whole movie, they’re with us too 🫂💜
This scene in this movie which may I say this movie is phenomenal but this scene Shug her singing is just so Soulful and this is to me where she shows Whoopi that she appreciates her and the bond between those two is unbreakable at that point even Danny Glover shut his mouth and quit laughing
So uplifting. That's true sisterhood keeping our eyes on each other and making sure we are each doing alright. Wish I felt more of that in this busy isolated world of comparison, judgement and disconnection. Used to spend ages in the bathrooms of bars and nightclubs drunkenly encouraging, pep talking and complimenting other gals to give them a boost to their esteem. Hilarious, but I always wanted my 'sisters' to feel good and enjoy themselves along with me.
+H Boogie I know I hadn't either until I had my second daughter this past may and I found myself singing it to the girls at bedtime. It seems sweet, low and blueslike...oh and instead of singing 'low life' I sing 'low light'....and 'shake your shimy' I sing 'shake your pinky'
This is one of my most favorite parts of this movie. Love Love Love this song. And who doesn't love when Celie sticks her tongue out at the women at the end?!
I’ve watched this film on and off for 20 years and it never fails to make me laugh and sob. A truly powerful film with some of the greatest actresses of the 20th century.
This movie - always stirred something in my soul. And this song - the way it is sung, the huge interplay between two seemingly different women - stupendous. Thank you for sharing
I watched The Color Purple for the first time last week and was blown away by this song. It had me tear up because of the message. Powerful song!!!! "I'm something, I hope you think that you're something to!" That line gets me every time!!!!! I feel like she singing to me. People keep your head up! We are stronger than our problems!
This is one of the best parts of this beautiful movie. The Color Purple has got to be one of the best movies ever. Great actors, great songs and music, and of course, great pictures. Whoopi, Oprah, and Dany Glover: amazing acting!!!
My sister and I watched this movie all the time when we were younger & still living at home. My mom always made sure we saw the classic movies of all time and this one one of them. In fact, my sister just sent me this link to remind me, it made me smile and tear up because we always sang this song when it would randomly pop in one of our heads :) Sigh. I'm so sentimental ♡ I love you Chay! Best sister ever.
I love you soooo much and I want you to always remember you are something and don't let anyone or anything stop you. You mean the world to me! Your little sister forevers I Shwuv to Wuv You wots!
I haven't seen my own baby sister since my parents kicked me out of the house. I was her best friend and she was mine until they bad mouthed me to her and rejected all my calls. This song really hits home for me. I hope anyone who has a sister calls and tells them how much they love them after hearing this song.
Such a beautiful scene so much love in her approach as a beautiful women seeing beauty in all not just what is perceived to society's eyes to see soul before flesh this represents Black Sista Love no negativity Just Love of self to another
