On this day 27 June 1975 at AM 11:30 New York Time the MS Kungsholm departs from Pier 97 for its last and final North Cape Cruise under the Swedish American Line registry. How many people knew then that it would be the very last time…? The crew members that had been hired over the summer season that year, like me, knew that the traffic would end later that year as the Kungsholm was going to a shipyard. It was written in our contracts. However, the North Cape Cruise Passenger List that was printed in the USA gave an impression of “business as usual”. It contained a complete 1975-1976 SAILING SCHEDULE filled with continued cruises around South America, the West Indies and the South Pacific & Far East, however with an added parenthesis in fine text stating “(subject to change without notice)”. And we all know what happened next… Nevertheless, many of us had a special feeling of adventure deep inside each time we departed from Pier 97, and obviously the silhouette of the rock of North Cape by midnight provokes a sense of solitude and eternity… Seeing is believing - so get onboard!

The Kungsholm was a beautiful looking ship-unlike the ones today. My mother did a North Cape cruise on the Gripsholm in July 1973

For those who are interested. Pier 97 was the traditional berth for Swedish America Line in New York. Pier 97 closed to regular passenger traffic in 1974. Between 1973 and 1975 Piers 88 to 93 were modernised and rebuilt. During 1975 all passenger traffic was concentrated on just the six remaining piers. The totally modernised and rebuilt Piers 88 to 93 with all of the remaining passenger Piers on the Hudson closed to regular passenger traffic. Piers 88 to 93 make up the present day Manhatten Cruise Terminal. The above footage of the KUNGSHOLM departing New York in June 1975 shows her departing from Pier 90 not Pier 97 which had closed by then. The KUNGSHOLM was sold by Swedish America Line in 1975 to Flagship Cruises. The KUNGSHOLM retained her name and itineraries under Flagship Cruises. Flagship Cruises were in financial difficulties in 1979 and the KUNGSHOLM was sold to the British company P&O Cruises. After a complete refit that certainly changed her exterior looks she re-emerged as the SEA PRINCESS. I won't go into detail regarding her career with P&O and her subsequent owners thereafter as all the information is easily accessible online.

I should just add Piers 88 to 93 after they were reconstructed in 1975 were renamed Berths 1 to 6. They have since been renamed back to Piers 88 to 93. The KUNGSHOLM is seen departing from Berth 3 otherwise known as Pier 90.
