On this day 27 June 1975 at AM 11:30 New York Time the MS Kungsholm departs from Pier 97 for its last and final North Cape Cruise under the Swedish American Line registry. How many people knew then that it would be the very last time…? The crew members that had been hired over the summer season that year, like me, knew that the traffic would end later that year as the Kungsholm was going to a shipyard. It was written in our contracts. However, the North Cape Cruise Passenger List that was printed in the USA gave an impression of “business as usual”. It contained a complete 1975-1976 SAILING SCHEDULE filled with continued cruises around South America, the West Indies and the South Pacific & Far East, however with an added parenthesis in fine text stating “(subject to change without notice)”. And we all know what happened next… Nevertheless, many of us had a special feeling of adventure deep inside each time we departed from Pier 97, and obviously the silhouette of the rock of North Cape by midnight provokes a sense of solitude and eternity… Seeing is believing - so get onboard!
