Today I take look around some of the new FREEWARE DEM Scenery being released for Microsoft Flight Simulator, on the popular and renowned flightsim.to
There are certainly plenty of options already - including Switzerland (which we take a brief look at in this video) and strangely, two different types of mesh too
- CGL Mesh (like this one made by SACrafters)
- Heightmap Mesh (apparently not as good)
Certainly if you're seeing some payware options (like Orbx's New Zealand) I would 100% check out these freeware terrain mesh options first - they look STUNNING for VFR Flying in MSFS.
Are they needed for high altitude IFR though? Probably not at really high altitudes, but if you like VFR around certain regions that have the CGL Mesh then I would definitely recommend at least trying it out.

It's the good old click & drag install - but I'd recommend reading through the page first to see what to expect. Some people have reported CTDs... and, it's all still very much experimental so bear that in mind too.
