With this being the only real disassembly video of a GT73/75 I was going to ask: "I have the MSI GT73VR which is essentially the same with generation older CPU. Where you put the heatsinks back on and put on new thermal paste did you get better thermals after doing so? My CPU runs really hot as well as my GPU and I think the easiest thing I could do would be to replace the old thermal paste."
@@mohammedyakob4451 I always have it plugged in, so I have all options maxed out. It gets hot no matter what, but I really haven't noticed any performance issues from the heat. I don't clean it as often as I should,.
Author, thank you for this video! I used it as guide when had to disassemble my laptop to replace card with headphone sockets (seems that switch responsible for reconition of headphone jackplug was broken and when plug my headphones the sound continued to go from speakers & headphones). Few remarks: 1) As other guys noted in comments, the first thing to do when just open the bottom cover - is to plug the battery off (my was not stiched, so was easily removed). And the last thing to do before put the bottom cover - is to plug battery in. 2) Be careful with trouchpad trail when remove the middle cover. Mine was stiched to the cover and when I remove the cover it was plug out from the socket of touchpad. I didn't note it timely and had to disassemble laptop twice to fix this. 3) As noted in video (but not shown), replace the paste on CPU/GPU. In spite of the fact that laptop just 1 year old, the original paste was quite dry. It didn't influence the temperature although: in stress tests hottest core was 85 deg. I applied Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut. 4) In my laptop I don't have this cooling radiator (shown at 13:02). Any idea what it for?
@@nawaazabd6352 if you going to touch RAM or SSD modules like M.2/MSATA then answer is yes, those 2 components acts just like normal board as the motherboard. While a HDD isn't required, since HDD doesen't shorten easily. But if you short a M.2/mSATA then it's risk that it could shorten rest of laptop due to battery is remained connected while you touching the m.2/mSATA and RAM modules.

Thanks for the video. I've been looking for a video this exact model & i guess i stopped about the time you guys made this. Thanks again guys! Glad to see the video now that I'm about to start back on this computer.
5 screws isn't too bad when you consider how some Asus ones have almost 10 on the bottom and then you gotta pry the freakin' top off with a flat head screwdriver just to get into it. I like it when you can just undo a couple of screws/switches and just open 'er up nice and easy like this :3
Hi, I have MSI GT75 Titan 8RG, i9 8950HK, 32GB Memory, GTX1080. Is it possible to connect the same GTX1080 graphics card, since there is one more slot provided. If yes, does another card fit into that available space? and also, where is the power supply small cable that connects the graphics card?
The 2nd gpu slot is made for the 1070 sli not the 1080 Since the 2nd slot doesn't fit the mxm card and the heatsinks that comes with. I did alot of research on this since I wanted to go 1080sli but it's impossible.
Is there any chance that you could make a video about how to apply the Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut on both GPU/CPU for this model? I have this exact mode and been wanting to do that task ever since I bought it...
The application of liquid metal on laptop's CPU and GPU kinda all the same in general, first you take off the heatsink then remove all the thermal paste on heatsink and CPU plus GPU. Cover the area around the CPU and GPU with formal coating and then with electrical tape. Then apply the liquid metal only on the die and on the contacted surface die on heatsink and it's done
Hi, Just an URGENT comment on your video. NEVER EVER disassemble the inside components with a screwdriver unless you UNPLUG THE BATTERY CONNECTOR FIRST! There is STILL power going through the mainboard. Not something that would cause instant magic smoke, if a screw fell in the case with the AC adapter plugged in (with the computer off), but there is still power and it is VERY DANGEROUS. Plus (unknown and untested), there seems to be an internal power button (almost certainly it is NOT a clear cmos button as clearing cmos=hold and depress the main power button for 60 seconds; also wipes date/time), by the slave MXM GPU slot (hidden under a heatpipe). So it's possible to even power on the system with the battery connected while disassembling stuff, which would destroy it. Please be careful. Always unplug the battery molex connector after opening the case!
Have you ever thinked that there is so called ESD kits? like screwdrivers and such that are made to not cause any ESD damage? This guy could be using one of these, then it's fine to use it inside a laptop. Since screw driver is made not to cause any ESD. If you used a normal screw driver from a plain store, then it's a no no, those screw drivers are not ESD secured.
@@RONIN114 that is not the point, if you keep the battery connected and you are ESD protected, it can still shorten something if etc one component connects to another one wrongly and it will shorten whole pc. So that's why battery must be disconnected first with ESD protection or not.
I see what you are saying, considering DC vs Ac, there is a load resistor to prevent you from being zapped when working on live equipment. I worked at Lam research testing live "tools" large and small. Both we would ground ourselves either to the tool itself or to esd or the tool lift. Maybe I'm wrong feel free to correct, but the machines passed test and worked for the customer. Also, thats not just during test but thought build process. Thats what they train everyone in Livermore, san jose and our Oregon location. I started building line 1 and worked my way up to line 16. Then to test.
@@RONIN114 Well if you read the maintenance manual/service manual from most computer manufacturers it always states on the first step to always disconnect the battery first. Even if you are ESD protected or are not ESD protected, if you are ESD protected, then you won't be zapped. But component can still gain damage since electricity is flowing through motherboard while the battery is still connected, so if you, etc disconnect/remove wifi card and then re-connect it, that could easily cause a small damage/shortage straight into the motherboard. So this is why battery shall always be removed no matter if you are protected or not.
Having owned this laptop for a year I adore it, but I would like to upgrade the GPU and this is the first definitive answer that the GPU can be removed. Where can I go for more information?
Hello , i have a Question in the round for the MSI GT75 8RG-035. The RAM is 16GB are the RAM banks dual channel? Which manufacturer is installed by MSI? Should it be a problem to install only 2 more RAM a 16GB on 48GB RAM?
Thanks for the tip about the ssd heatsink.... Also I have to do a memory upgrade so I'll be referring to this vid in future... And thanks for recording in 4k...
do you have this laptop? I bought it recently, but for heavens's sake i can't find how to control subwoofer level. Can you tell me is it possible to lower volume output for subwoofer on your titan? i try sliding subwoofer level slider in audio settings but nothings happens.. it seems woofer is tied to left and right speakers and it can't be controlled separately.
I know this is an ancient video, but is it possible to put the ram into the slot on the back side of the board? I see the two extra ddr4 slots and wondering if it’s the same? I’m trouble shooting ram slots and really don’t want to flip this again if the other slot doesn’t fix the problem….
Hi. I have MSI GT75 Titan 8rg Laptop (i7 8750H with GTX 1080 gb graphics). The guy who sold me the laptop told me their is empty slot where i can add 1 more graphics card. But will also require one more charger. I would like to know whether if it's possible to add another graphics card (same GTX 1080) or if not possible then can i upgrade my previous graphics card to GTX 1080ti. And also the screen is currently FHD, can i also replace the screen from FHD to UHD. Appreciate your response guys
Great video. Just a quick question.. that little rubber rectangle prism shaped thing. The one you mentioned regarding where the GPU SLI should be. Does it have a function? It seems mine is lose after attempting to clean the insides. Should I just chuck it in the bin? The glue on the bottom of the prism has completely dried up (probably due to the immense heat, and bumpy travelling) what should i do? Hope to hear back. Thanks 🙏😭
Hi is there a way for me to replace the keyboard of this beast? I have mine for quite some time now and I want to buy a replacement keyboard but I fear that without guidance its gonna be a waste of money. Hope to hear from you sir!
answer is no, laptop supports only 1 GTX1080, but you can add a 2nd gpu through TB3 and using exteneral GPU chassi. Update: After re-watching the video 5 times i actually see what you 2 are mentioning, but to get SLI support to work you need dual Chargers and i can see 2nd PCIe port similar to main one for main gpu. So yeah it sems it can handle 2 GPUS at once. Only thing you need to get is proper cooling heatpipes and dual chargers i guess.
Where can I find and order batteries for MSI GT75 TItan pro? I'm currently in Saudi Arabia and I can't find batteries for this laptop? Any information regarding batteries for this laptop which I can order online from anywhere?
Got any resources on popping open the screen and its connections? Got one [MSI GT73VR 7RE Titan SLI] with what seems to be a loose backlight cable.. can still see screen when you put a flashlight on it and its inconsistently on/off. Connecting to a second monitor is the current workaround. Thanks!
Can you tell me how onerous replacing the physical rj45 socket connector would be on this thing? This video doesn't focus on that part of the board very well/much so can't really make a determination myself at the moment. Ended up w/a CAT7 cable in the thing w/a particularly stout tab and w/the lip up where one would need to get a finger in there to collapse the tab and remove the cable, I couldn't do it. I tried to be careful and ended up going w/a screwdriver and ultimately breaking the part of the connector that retains the cable's latching tabs. Now no cable stays in the socket. A part # would be swell if you happen to have such data. TIA!
My msi titan LAN port has bent wires, would like to order correct port before breakdown, this LAN has a metal top and black plastic bottom over solder joints?? any idea where to get that port? Thanks for the breakdown super good video detail and explaination!!
From MSI's website, it states: 1x M.2 SSD slot (NVMe PCIe Gen3) 2x M.2 SSD Combo (NVMe PCIe Gen3 / SATA) They should all be NVMe, with one just being NVMe only.
@@empoweredpc If you referred about GT75 then 2x m.2 slots are NVMe which are ones under thermal pads, the non-thermal pads is the SATA only M.2 SSD slot which does not require any thermal pad becuase SATA SSD M.2 does not get hot like an NVMe M.2 does.
My model is GT72 2PE Dominator Pro. It's Nvidia GTX880M is stopped by Windows. There is an exclamation mark in Device Manager. I re-installed the driver but problem is still unsolved. Is the graphics card broken? Any solution? Thanks a lot!
I have the MSI GT80S Titan SLI-002 and all of a sudden my laptop has a black screen and the gpu fans run at max..... Not good for a laptop that cost almost 4K just 4.5 years ago. IDK what to do other than send it back for a RMA and hope they dont try to screw me on fixing it.
Answer to Computer Upgrade King, Reason why 3rd slot does not have any thermal pad, it's because 2 M.2 slots there with thermal pads supports NVMe while 3rd slot is only a M.2 SATA SSD slot. That's why thermal pad did not cover the 3rd slot.
that measn the 3rd "M.2 SATA SSD" doesn't over heat just like M.2 NVMe ?? and please what are the difference between NVMe's and SATA SSD? I think NVMe's are faster right?
@@awesomebishek2530 yes SATA M.2 SSD works at the same speed as plain SATA3 2.5 SSD drives that is around 500-550MB/s while PCIe can do 1-2GB/s and NVMe can do faster like 3-5GB/s or something like that. The faster it is the more heat will be generated. Which is why NVMe drives have to have thermal cooling to keep it from getting to hot.
Hi i hope you can answer me this, whats the thickness of the heatpads on that cooler? I want to replace some because there not in a good shape anymore. I mean the heatpads you see on 4:55
Just curious could I apply liquid metal cooling to the GPU and the CPU? I noticed that it came with copper heat sinks, but will it void the warranty in the US?
No idea about warranty, but I did this application successfully to my MSI GT75 TITAN 8SG. Works really well. But now I have to do the teardown since I'm replacing/upgrading the memory.
Question , I have exactly like this laptop msi titan gt75 but while I was carrying this beast inside a bag I accidentally smashed my laptop onto a metal door , the impact wasn't so powerful though . Had a little scratch but my question is (( will the compartments inside the laptop get damaged when my laptop hits any tough objects no matter how impactful the hit is ? ))
it depends where it get the impact hits, if it's on plastic area then answer would be plastic would mostlikely crack, aluminum side would start getting small pushed in forms and that could start damaging TN/LCD panel.
there's no difference in them, if yours is black then it's only because pips and heatsink are sprayed with black color, but pipe and heatsink is the same color in default as in the video, before it got sprayed black.
I doubt it I looked into it a bit... It's almost impossible to find a 2080 mxm msi card.. This was the only model that had this type of card.. There weren't many made as it is.. Add to that there are 2 versions of the 2080 laptop a mxm and bga.. The mxm is very rare and I suspect wasn't made for very long... and the 3080 eliminated the MXM all together... So the 3000 series isn't even an option... Also the heatsinks look different not too different but different enough it may not fit or have to be modded...
I have the same question. System came with 16GB module. I just want to add a second 16GB to get 32GB. Must I flip the board and install it in the second slot of the first bank, under the board? Or can I just install it in the first slot of the second bank, facing up. Does this impact the whole single/dual channel thing or do I get the same results.
Slots 1 and 3 are on the top of the board and have to be filled for dual channel Slots 2 and 4 are the easy access RAM slots but are a separate channel
I’m worried about the M2’s overheating issues. Even if I use them only for the OS, programs such as Vray will probably overload them. Is it possible to remove the M2’s altogether and have the OS in a SATA SSD? Is there just one SATA slot?
in GT75 you shouldn't have any overheating issue since it has a huge heatsink mounted on top of the 3x M.2 Slots and has thermal pad applied, to help the heat go out into heatsink to keep M.2 SSD from overheating.
No, most gaming laptops have soldered CPU. But Dell decided to make new gaming laptop in alienware range called Alienware AREA51m which comes with a desktop socket for the cpu instead, on the motherboard and gpu is replaceable as well.
Cringe , no battery disconnect before disassembly , risk shorting out ... connected battery before reassembly , risk shorting out to ground .. did not reapply thermal paste ...plus I bet that shit didn't have WiFi after because he didn't connect the two signal cables back on the WiFi card ... Terrible Terrible !!
Man I wanted to replace the stock Kingston ram with hyper x until I see how much hassle it takes to replace the hidden ram slot, not sure if I want to do that now considering the laptop might not work if I fk up the procedure
Ho Lee Chit it’s a hassle but if you take your time it’s not that bad. I bought this laptop and installed like 64gb of ram. I did the same thing with my wife’s gt63. God was it scary at first but again take your time. If it’s not coming off don’t force it. Double check you didn’t miss any screws or cables. Apply liquid metal is more nerve wracking lol.
Bit of a noob when it comes to these things so this could be a stupid question but is there any way to replace the keyboard (The whole thing not just individual keys) on these laptops? Quite a few of my keys have stopped working after my very kind mother wiped it with a dettol wipe
did u end up replacing the keyboard, i got this exact laptop and sometimes the keys type random stuff ( i guess water damage from a screen wipe) i bought it within a year so should still habe warranty, how did u get it fixed?
@@DavidStalvey hi dave, do your keys still type fine? mine make random characters sometimes. If its only the lights have u tried reinstalling steelseries engine? i had that problem before too. Hope u can fix it yourself.
@@kennethschaijk8698 Yes, all my keys work fine. After a small spill on my laptop I shut if down and cleaned up as much as i could. I left it to dry overnight and started it the next day. The lights worked for a bit but after a couple hours they began to flicker and then went out. The keyboard works perfect otherwise. It actually flickered on the other day (a month after the spill) and right back off. I have reinstalled the engine with the same results. I think it might be something with or near the button that allows you to cycle the color layout.
I know your comment is old, but that's correct, whole top cover where keyboard and touchpad and so on must be replaced, since the keyboard is glued/screwed stuck permanently onto the top cover.
FANS on this laptop are big and does get loud during gaming. That's normal and cannot be avoided since this GT75 laptop has no throttling which is why fans become loud, if you did make it a lot silent then the laptop would start throttling and you wouldn't be able to play for long.
The warranty policy varies from country to country, in some MSI has decided to accept that breaking the factory seal won't void warranty as long owner of the laptop does not cause damage or breaking the laptop. Anything like that happens will make warranty voided. But upgrading RAM, Replacing HDD does not affect warranty. But I have heard that if you do need to send the laptop for repairs, you must putt old components back in or the authorized repair center will complain and most likely refuse to repair laptop if the new parts are inside it. So keep old parts and drives in case this happens, so you can put these in and send the laptop for repair. If it comes to a warranty repair.
this is not for everyone and I don't think it's normal to have to do this as not everyone has the knowledge and confidence to do this also not after this video.. it's the same that if I use my skills in painting for a video people won't be able to paint after watching my video. * mine is able to upgrade to 64 .. bought it with 32 in it but I think if I ever need to do that I bring it to a professional to do it for me 😅
Hello. I know this might sound a bit silly to you, but I have ordered this laptop with 16gb ram and I wondered if I'd have to mess about with the board flip if I wanted to upgrade to 32gb down the line. Or could I just slip a 16gb module into one of the more accessible slots?
Take my words with a grain of salt, but if you can grab another 16gb of ram of the same model, you can easily slip that in to give you 32GB. I always suggest getting the same ram models so you won't get any issues with different factory makes. However, you'd have to get the last screw that's under the factory seal to get to the ram slots, which might void your warranty, so you'd want to go to an authorised store to do it for you. If you really want to do it yourself, you should be able to find the ram slots in this laptop easily through google.
Sylly Thank you for your reply. Although I was speaking about whether I would need to do a board flip, like in the video, in order to upgrade to 32gb and maintain performance - would there be any adverse effects if I just put another 16gb module (similar spec) into one of the other slots?
Apologies. I don't think you'd need to do a boardflip if you're only adding in another 16GB of ram. There's two slots at the top of the board which can have a max of 16GB each, which is relatively easy-access compared to another set of slots at the bottom on the board. If you're not wanting to have 64GB in your system, then I don't reckon you'd need a board flip. There shouldn't be any adverse effects granted you get the same model of ram card. I've heard some people have had a bad experiance equipping another ram of a different model, so I'd advise trying to stick to identical cards. Here's a link to a general disassembly of the laptop: www.laptopmain.com/msi-gt75vr-titan-disassembly-ssd-ram-hdd-upgrade-options/
