MSPTDA #02: Data Analysis Business Intelligence Terms: Microsoft Power Tools for Data Analysis Class 

I studied Excel with many instructors, but Mike is the best. His tutorials helped me to get my current job and perform very well. Every time I want to do something in Excel I still can hear his tune of voice in my head. Design, show in tabular.

You can be contagious easily by Mike's enthusiasm in teaching students. His teaching style is incredible. He is one of the best teachers I have ever had. Thank you, Mike. Keep up!

I enjoy the teaching, quite user-friendly. Mike is an enthusiastic teacher who conveys his passion for excel to his students. I became interested in Power BI 2 years ago but got bogged down at work. Thanks to that introduction, I recognized that it was time to start using Power BI if I didn't want to become totally mired in the large datasets that I've started using where VLOOKUPS can take upwards of 10 minutes and more! Your simple, straightforward but comprehensive introduction, helped me to quickly get back up to speed and I look forward to the following videos to get me started on my way. Thanks so much!

Mike mentions something very very important at 4:53 and that is that we excel users usually don't think about defining the type of data we have in our columns. However, in a Mr Excel post a few months back he encountered a rather interesting problem. He couldn't get the Insight tool in Excel 2019 to work on his 10-year-old data set. The Microsoft experts eventually discovered that a record in one of his data fields/columns was actually formatted as a date even though it was all text in the column. This caused the Insight tool to not analyse his data set. To Mr Excel's surprise, he'd been using the file like that for years and never noticed. Behold, when I tried the tool on my own large dataset, I too had the same problem. With the exception of the date column, I converted all other columns to general then Insight worked like a dream.

Mike has contributed more than anybody else in the world for the sharing and teaching of Excel knowledge, based on my experience Mike teaches what is relevant, Mike videos are always high quality, yet Mike is so humble. Thank you, Mike, I was a completely obscure excel user until I start to watch your videos, and it was amazing to hear (in the first excel video watch from mike) you referring to the Excel cross-hair as the angry rabbit.

Great overview course and highly recommended! Don't skip this one if you are just learning Power Pivot, Power Query, or Power BI - good overview on structure and getting it right the first time. I cannot tell you how many times I discovered I had an awesome workbook but the structure was not in the star schema format and left me trapped!

First off, I love your content! It is well organized, easy to follow, and has been a great resource for me. There is one thing that needs a correction though... a field is not a column. A field is where a column and a row (or record) intersect. Therefore, a record can have multiple fields. But each field is specific to that record. Thanks for all your hard work. Professor Mike, a very nice summary of a lot of useful jargons that are used in the DW/BI area. I love the examples and the clear way they were organized and explained. I also loved your definition of BI "convert data into useful/actionable/refreshable information" - i have been using Actionable only so far - I am gonna add Refreshable also into my vocabulary as I get what you mean :) . I also liked the way you labeled Dimension table attributes as "attributes for Filtering" - beautiful as a typical business user would be able to relate to these label easily :) I also emphasize in my classes proper naming, understanding the grain/LoD of the data set before we start dragging and dropping. For many-to-many, the example I use is Budget vs Actual as that is something everyone understands and it is the classic usecase for M2M. I felt your example of invoices-to-orders was a bit of a stretch. The way I explain the difference between Relational DB model vs Reporting model is that Relational DB is optimized for faster writing (write it once, write it fast) and reporting models are optimized for faster reading (it is ok to duplicate data to speed up reading times). Overall a great video with awesome notes - I am going to use your video as a reference to share it with new people in this field.

PowerToolsIsFUN. Great stuff as ever Mike. Many analysts get bogged down in the technicalities of producing 100% accurate summaries, or having a perfect source and often lose sight of the fact that their work is to produce analysis that informs a business decision. The other thing that's often missed is the importance of timeliness in such cases. The perfect report is worthless if it is presented after the Decision Point has passed. I'm in the process of recording a video based on our Business Intelligence course here in UK. When it is uploaded I'd be interested in your comments about any regional differences you notice from what you are teaching in USA. We often have particular issues like datetime formats where the data is from an overseas source i.e. Germany (SAP Databases) 24/06/2018 = 24.06.2018, USA = 06/24/2018. The "Locale" of the source data setting in Power BI Desktop saves loads of time sorting this out, otherwise I have to Split by delimiter, CONCATENATE and then get Date from resultant Text.. Another question: I spend a large amount of time generating random data sets to use for training. Is it the same for you? Keep up the FUN and thanks as ever.
