OMG!! It took me one full day to watch this video and follow along with Mike step by step to complete this file. I had to stop and rewind the video many times to understand and complete the DAX formulas. I learned how to create a table, new columns , Dax formulas, different visualization with charts, cards, matrix, and many more. This was sure a comprehensive video. At the end of the day, I had a huge headache, but it was worth it. THANKS A MILLION MIKE!!! You make learning fun.
Most comprehensive and all-in introduction to Power BI. Its a tour de force, highly recommended and must watch for beginners and intermediates too. What an achievement!

ExcelIsFun Hi Mike, I have a question for power BI that bothers me few days and I can’t find a solution for it.I have created the last year year to date (LY YTD) figures and year to date (YTD) figures from original sales data in power BI using measures. And I have also created three customer groups based on the LY YTD and YTD using measures. I would like to place the groups in power BI slicer so the other users can simply choose the group that they want to see and the sales report will show. But looks like we can’t place measures in slicer. I have tried the below methods but none of them work: 1, create columns instead of measure for LY YTD and YTD. However, it’s not working as they appeared to have dependency issue. 2, using SWITCH functions tried to link the measures with the sales report, still not working. The demonstration video that I looked at only shows the total figure, but I would like to have the list of all the customers that under the selected group. 3, I’ve tried the VAR logictest but the similar issue as method 2. Do you have any suggestions? I’m not quite sure whether I’m on the right track to solve my issue but each method is so close to my expected result... really really appreciate your advise! 😊
@@emmafeng55 I am not sure exactly without seeing a small replica of your larger model that can illustrate all the parameters in the problem. In general, if you want something in a slicer, you gotta put it is a table and put the table in the model with the correct relationship lines. If it was just customer group, then the customer attribute would go in Customer table. Maybe you need the LY YTD and YTD sales as amounts in column in customer table!?!?! If you can make a small model in Excel with your tables and customers and so on, amd give me an example of the final result, I am pretty sure I could figure it out... Can you do that?
@@excelisfun Hi Mike, yes i do tried to create the customer group in a new table and I'm not quite sure whether because my background linkage formula is incorrect so its not successfully link. If it's not too much trouble can I send you the small part of the data and you can have a look? May I have your email address? thanks a lot~~
@@emmafeng55 not a small part of the data. Send a complete parallel but much smaller model that shows your situation, state what your model is, what the goal is, and an example of what the end result is (maybe a few examples of what the correct answer would be). Maybe I can back my way into the logic that way. I get 100s of correspondences each day, so unless I can understand what your situation is, the goal and what the end result should be, in less that one minute, it is unlikely that I can help. excelisfun at gmail : )
I felt that I had not completely grasped the knowledge this video is supposed to convey so I watched it a second and then a third time. Now I can say I have grasped completely all the knowledge Mike Girvin is transmitting via this video. By watching the video several times I also can appreciate all the time and effort put by Mike to shoot a video like this. Every detail to deliver a clear message is taken care of: zooming, panning, highliting text with different colors, differente shapes pointing to messages, pdf notes, etc. This is true for all the videos Mike uploads to RU-vid. I feel compelled to say what an amazing job Mike G. does...and it is for free!. Thank you Mike, I admire you very much. I wish you and your family a very happy new year.
Yes, indeed, it does take an immense amount of planning and executing and creating and inventing!!! The video and all the resources took 161.5 hours to create. .. I am so happy that you watched it a few times, because that is the intent. I try to put as much into one video and story, so it is a one stop shopping for those that want to learn the hows and whys : ) Thanks for your support on each vid you watch with those comments and Thumbs Ups, Carlos : ) : )
Once again you never dissapoint... You are a great inspiration and awesome teacher to learn from. Most of what I know came from your lessons. Thanks you so much....
An epic video indeed. It took me 4 days to work through the example myself as you showed step-by-step the entire process. It was worth every minute of time spent as always! Thanks.
This is just another amazing and phenomenal video form Mike Girvin. There are golden nuggets at every turn, I would truly be lost without his training and expertise. Thank you so much
Mike everything has been already written from others. Remarkable work as an instructor/tutor. I started from power querry lessons and moved forward, at this point I am grateful not only for these online courses but because you explain the way things are function. My learning key is based on understanding the concept before gain the experience (trials and errors) - you give us this knowledge in most of the times with fun! Thank you for all
Although part of the contents are already touched upon a bit in previous or other videos, still this one is complete and more insightful, really worth to spend the time and effort in this one, learn not only the operation method, tricks, but also more important, logical behind. Awesome course, really appreciated for sharing
You are welcome! Yes, my classes are less about the flashy, and more about the technical formulas stuff and about the concepts and whys. I am glad that it all helps you, zhou!!
This video is amazing. Power BI has apparently gone through a few updates since it was made and a few of the buttons have been renamed or moved around, but I was still able to follow along. Particularly the NLP at the very end did a much better job of interpreting my input. Thank you so much for this video. What a great free tool!
I just love Mike videos because he always finds a way to explain and illustrate concepts that otherwise would be difficult to understand. Thank you very much Excelisfun channel.
You are welcome!!!! I HAVE to figure out a way to illustrate the difficult, or else a guy like me (not too smart) would never understand it either : ) Thank you very much for your support, Carlos!!!!
what else I notice first, if we add all notes created by mike we will get the biggest book about excel ever made second,...you find very useful exercises ( i try them especially for this series indeed I learned from them too ) thank you mike I owe you the excel knowledge :)
Yes, that is 100% correct. That is 100% my intent!!!! The pdf notes for all my free classes at RU-vid are lots of free books. I give away free videos, Excel files, books and practice problems for the world to learn from. I am trying to make the world a better place with free education for the world!!!! i just wish there would be more support for all this free education...
thank you for this excellent video Michael. I haven't stop watching. It is so detail, clear, relevant and on point. It is exactly what you called it -comprehensive example. You're such a great teacher - i know this as I've followed through your excel videos and learnt so much. Though it's a lot to follow and grasp from this, it is worth it. You made power BI fun and enjoyable for me. You just made it so easy and fun. I always look forward to listening and learning from you. Thank you so much. i highly recommend this video.
Thank you, thank you , thank you. Paid for a course on Udemy 🤦♂️, the best things in life really are free . Anyone can attempt to teach but only a select few do it well, you sir are in a class of your own.
A lot of the paid classes are not high quality. I am sorry about that, Francisco. But at least, you know now that I post free resources for the world here at RU-vid. Tell all your friends, and pay for each "free" video with a comment and thumbs up, and a Sub too : )
Mike, when creating a calendar using DAX you can add in Quarter by using Format just like you did for Month. Quarter = Format(dDate[Date], "Q") Another way to prevent hidden date tables from being created is to turn off that functionality. Options and settings > Options > Current File: Data Load > uncheck Auto Date/Time under Time Intelligence
From our Teamate, pa beader, we want to Define the terms used in the video with more accuracy (In this video I used the term "Dashboard" incorrectly). 1) Report = Power BI File Created with Desktop that contains the Tabs (Pages), Data Sets and Data Model. 2) Each Report is connected to One Data Set. 3) Tab in Power BI File = a Page a set of visuals. 4) Dashboard = a place to pin visuals in Power BI Service website. A Dashboard can contain visuals from different Reports and Data Sets.
Hi Mike: in PowerBI How do we calculate cumulative balance for financial data like balance sheet Asset/Liability accounts. in essence the calculation is Asset 1 balance in march is Balance beginning of year + accumulated transactions during the year on same account number. Example: Account 1211 Accumulated balance in July = balance as of 20xx/01/01 + All transactions booked on account 1211 up until end of July I couldn't solve this issue nor could i find solution online...is it possible for you to make video about it? it seems that many people has it, found in my search many questions but no concrete answer..
What a video Mike..!!! Lots of world class tips and tricks that might take an individuals months to figure out and understand. I installed Nov update and didn’t see the new relationship view pop-ups. I had to go Microsoft page to figure this out. Thanks for raising this and directing me to the right channel. Continue changing the world as Power BI Desktop Does 🌷🌷
I recently started learning some VBA. Writing formulas in steps is makes them much easier to read; especially when declaring variables inside of DAX it makes it super easy to come back and edit.
@@chrism9037 Nice!!! Split screen... I still have not gotten there even though the default setup at my work is two screens for all employees because I am just too fast with the Alt + Tab to get to whatever window I want. One of these days I will have to upgrade : ) Glad it was awesome for you and thanks for your amazing support : )
Thanks Mike. Awesome again. Just like Die Hard 2, Die Harder... The sequel was as good as the original. This video is is as good, if not better than MSPTDA 15. Great work.
Thank you seems too simple of a word to express my gratitude for the effort, and work, you put into making this video, and all supporting documents. Amazing sounds a little better, but still falls short. I am exceptionally and perpetually thankful to you. Point and purpose of RU-vid, right here!!!
You are welcome! Thanks for your words. You choose great words, Morck!!! Thanks for the support on each video with those comments and thumbs ups, and of course your Sub : )
Power Pivot Video and practicing was fun last Week. This is another Challenge !!! :) DAX formula in a straight line view is much much more readable for me. Beautiful Staff. Thanks Mike :) :)
I am a new bee to Power BI, ealier to this learnt Tableau. This is almost my first go at the videos. I am already in love with this play list. I am straight away starting with this series. Hope you will not dissapoint me. Liked :) Subscribed :) ;) :)
I hope that I do not disappoint. Start at #1 and watch all the way through. Below each video are files, pdf notes and practice problems. Be sure to comment and thumbs up each video as a payment for this free education : ) Thanks for your support, Vijay!!!
Glad you like it! I do try to provide free education, end to end : ) Thanks for your support with your comment, thumbs up and of course your Sub, raheel : ) : ) : )
One more day in lockdown and learn one more tutorial, Quite similar to previous one as comparing in DAX but nice visuals. Thank you much for sharing. It's simply Greatt...
hi mike, I give you five stars for ddate table I remember that Isaw the same approach in one of your excel date function and formula videos ... great!!!
One comment: You are calling your reports "dashboards", but it may be wise to call them "Reports" because "Reports" and "Dashboards" are distinctively different things in Power BI Service. It took me a long time to understand the difference at the start of my Power BI learning journey, and I thought it would be important to establish the terminologies especially if the audience tends to be at a beginning proficiency. Btw, MSPTA has been an awesome series, Mike! I always recommend your channel for those who want to teach Excel to themselves, and now I can do the same for Power BI.
These terms are very important. I guess I made a mistake. I thought that the file was the "report", and each tab in the report was a Dashboard. Is that not correct? Is this more correct: 1) File = Report, 2) Tab = Tab, 3) Dashboard is a place to Pin particular pieces of Reports in online BI Service website ?
@@HachiAdachi I am working on a new video based on your comment and pa's comment : ) Thanks for you two Teammates for helping me to get it more right : )
Just a quick note: Power BI uses the term Dashboard in a very specific way. It is a place to Pin particular pieces of Reports. What I find odd is you can only make use of it through the Power BI Service website. So you can't actually make Power BI Dashboards with the app. Not sure if that was confusing anybody else.

A File created with Desktop = Report and Dataset A tab in a Report = Page A Dashboard is a place to pin visuals... Also, they make a point of noting that each Report(collection of Pages) is connected to one Dataset. That's where a Dashboard is a bit more flexible in that it's visuals can come from many different Datasets.
That is why I post: to help people like you to learn and improve!!! I love to hear that it is helping : ) Please throw the help back this way, too, with those comments and Thumbs ups on each video that you watch : )
Excellent Lesson!! I think in the finished homework file, the start date for the rolling 12 mo ave tran sales measure is showing as + 1 year instead of - 1 year. Am I reading this correctly?
Amazing job you did here. Very practical application for Data Analysis. The homework very challenging but got it done. I wanted to use the LEFT() to extract the first letter of the City’s name in the power query editor but returned error message. I used extract drop down menu in the home tab instead. Got same visuals in the PowerBi as yours. Thanks for your contributions to knowledge development.
Thanks Mike, this video was very informative and power packed vid quality knowledge. Few of thing shown in the video can be directly applied to my workoperation. Awaiting 4 these video was worthwhile and you again have show us tat your d best of all excel masters. Please keep up d good work
I am glad that the content of the vid can be directly applied to your work operation!!! Thank you for the support, santosh, with your comment, Thumbs Up and Sub : )
Thanks sir for such an epic video. For me, dealing with date is the hardest part. For example, when analyse the retail sales, because of the difference between the weekdays and weekends in this year and last year, the sameperiod measure should not be used or elses Running total projection would therefore be distorted. I wish Excel would have the measures or formula to easily find the matching weekdays/weekends between diferrent years.
Yes!!!! Thanks for your consistent support, kostas : ) : ) Together, with my free education and your support on each video, we can make the world a better place!!!
@@excelisfun Sure Mike, that has to be the goal! To make our world a better place. And you offer much to this goal with your effort to make professional, rational, understandable videos for these wonderful tools (excel, power bi etc). Thanks once again.
I'm with you, I find the formatting a bit confusing when you first come across it. I'm used to it now but still type my own stuff in a line but try to format if posting a question.
I greatly appreciate your Power BI insructional video and have learned so much compared to other Power BI videos. I took note step by step and found that the Ave Daily Gross Profit measure was not covered in the Power Query editor fTransactions field and was not available when you started creating the Dashboard. So I created the DAX forumla looking at the 016-MSPTDA-Excel file for Ave Daily Gross Profit as shown below. Ave Daily Gross Profit = AVERAGEX( dDate,[Total Gross Profit] ) measure in Power Query but the Total COGS $267,510.50 had different numbers than what is shown in the video when adding it to the values field in the Dashboard. Is the excel fact sheet source data using slightly different numbers? Please address this!
