Thanks for the review Paul. I have the Micromo which is a tall narrow Jetboil. I like it but it is a little sensitive to wind which always seems to be blowing in the foothills and mountains of Northern California where I go hiking and because of that have become more interested in the Windburner recently so appreciated your review.

I've had a Jetboil for a few years now (the Sol in titanium). Absolutely great for winter day walking (when you need more than a flask) and for solo car camping when you're eating out during the day and just need the odd brew / breakfast. Great comparison and not much between them in normal conditions. I have just ordered a Jetboil skillet, having seen how it performs. 👍

Thanks for the in-depth look at these setups. This was really helpful in giving the extra information required to make a decision about which of these would be suitable for your needs. Pretty sure everybody's main gripe with this type of burner is their inability to cook on a skillet or pan. Saying that though, I think that's true of all camping type stoves, be it an alcohol stove or mini bush-box.

@@jonmathias6159 thanks Jon, when I get a chance I’ll get mine out of storage and try, but I’m pretty sure it doesn’t all go in - the burner + canister yes if sideways but not with the pot support too. I never really used mine much, not really a fan and mainly use alcohol burner set ups instead these days (speedster or trail designs). The only gas set-up I’m a fan of is the gsi pinnacle with a decent wind guard have that is firm but not too heavy. My Mini mo is too much of a weight penalty and too bulky for my liking.

Thanks for the in-depth review, great stuff! I have been a long time Jetboil user but the performance of the MSR Reactor and WB are unequalled in windy conditions, they just wipe the floor with any other stove on the market. Most of my outdoor activities are in the mountains and, surprise surprise.. it's windy! MSR for me, it's a no brainer. The WB may fall behind the JB in certain aspects, but all of those disadvantages are outweighed by far when it comes to performance in harsh conditions, at least in my book. The ability for boiling water quick when other stoves barely heat it is a godsend in many circumstances. If it's family camping etc then that's a different story, I think it comes down to your intended use of the stove. Truth be said if I were family camping I would be using cheaper options than either of these.

I also use a Windburner and it is great not to deal with a windscreen for any kind no matter how the weather is outside. For melting snow in subzero temps... well... that's a whole different thing and I use an Primus Omnifuel with white gas for that!

As a novice I would say that the jet boil is a fair way ahead (except in windy conditions) especially if both are used with the MSR lowdown stand that you reviewed a few weeks ago. However, I've got to do more camping to be sure that I can justify (to myself) splashing out on what are both premium products. Either way, I enjoyed hearing your comments.

I have both and i use my jet boil pot support on my wind burner. You must mill out the support to expose the burner to keep from over heating the stove. This could be a problem on your backpack trip if you were to over heat it because now you're down a stove unless you know how to reset it in the field. The wind burner has a nice heat distribution with the support. Msr's pan concentrates the heat in the center of the pan as you demonstrated. This is why i didn't go with their pan. The jet boil pan works great with the msr because they now both have good heat distribution. Using the jet boil with their pan is ok if you move the pan around to keep from hot spoting your pan. So far I'm still using the msr. Use at your own risk if you modify your pot support. It seems theres always something wrong with the design. I'm Norwegian so using a frying pan is a requirement.

I have a barely used Jetboil. Early model, no integrated lighter. It doesn't suit making meals so I take my Trangia gas system for multi day trips where actual cooking will be done. Sea kayak or car camping, so weight is no problem. I use the Jetboil for hot water drinks when at the beach for a swim, but can just as easily carry a flask of boiled water. The two reviewed here will each do a job for backpacking but there are lighter options if just to boil water.

Thing is with the jetboil and the pot adapter is that you don't have to use the jetboil brand pans or pots, you can use anything you want on it. Both have french press accessories (I have the jetboil one), the jetboil has a hanging accessory for the traditional narrow one.

Perhaps we seem to have a different idea of what compact means..I bought the Minimo and its the bulkiest stove I have, especially considering the adapter need to use a skillet does not fit inside when packing it away when the gas can is inside. I noticed you use the skillet but then pack away and skip the part of what to do with the adapter. I can fit a small gas can and my Soto Amicus burner inside a Lixada 650 titanium pot, and no special adapter needed, no wind break need, and about half the size.

Does the Jetboil pot support fit in the bag/can as well? I kind of prefer that design to be honest as there's no vendor lock-in, you pretty much have to use MSR pots and pans with it due to the design. Also (according to Jetboil!) their choice of a shorter pot is so that it's easier to eat out of.
