In 1992, the Marine Science Research Center at Stony Brook University commissioned John J. Stevens to create a series of videos on the Science of Long Island Sound. Program #1 shows the geography of Long Island Sound (as well as Long Island) and its surrounding coast line/ shore line. The scientists at the Research Center have investigated the contour and composition of the bottom of Long Island Sound. Geologists explain starting with the Continental Drift 200 million years ago, how Long Island Sound was originally formed 50 million years ago, and how it has been changed to the present form
