Does after market exhaust affect the engine?

If you change the whole exhaust system and it creates the Back Pressure on your engine then the exhaust gas will be stuck in engine and it will affect the mileage, but If you just change the mufflers then it'll change the sound but will not affect mileage anyhow. So i think if you just want to change the sound and not looking to increase minimal power, then go for muffler change rather full system.
