Just 24 hours after getting back from my adventure to Mt Owen, a perfect weather window down south led me to jump in the car and drive the 8 hours from home to Manapouri. Ahead of me was 4 days of absolutely epic conditions in the Fiordland wilderness.
Every time I'd previously been down this way, Mt Titiroa's shining white ridgeline - which from afar can be mistaken for snow but is actually granite sand - called out to me. So stoked to have finally made it here and fulfilled a long held dream.
As I mention at the route map in the video, from Garnock Burn (430 m elevation) to the summit of Mt Titiroa (1,715m) is untracked and unmarked. It's a case of fording the river then picking your way up through a steep section of forest and bluffs, then once out of the bushline (1,000 m), following the ridgeline to the summit. Remote backcountry navigation and survival skills are essential.
Total walk time from Manapouri to the Titiroa summit is approx 11-12 hours (with a fully laden pack). It's largely downhill on the way back so the return will be faster. For an extended trip it's also possible to head over to the North Borland.
If you enjoyed this video I'd be very grateful for a like or comment, your feedback inspires me to go on more adventures!
