Wow That's really cool and interesting vidz my friend. Keep it up and more vidz to come. Stay Safe and healthy always. More Blessings to you with your family my friend. Have a wonderful day ahead.
Catching up on your vids as I relaxed and enjoyed your CO hike. Passed thru CO two weeks ago as we were making our way to spend Thanksgiving with our three granddaughters. Scenery was great and looks like the weather was good. Nice they allowed man’s best friend to join along. Thanks for posting your route. Greetings from KY.
Magnificent place Bryan. The scenery is amazing. That was quite something with the sheep. And great camping for sure. And only seeing two people in three days is pretty awesome too. So glad you got to go together. ❤️ Awesome adventure. 👍
Hey Bryan, good video. Looked like a pretty nice trip. No weather issues, quiet....I've spent quite a lot of time in Medicine Bow-Routt NF but always the northern section in the Snowy Mtns of Wyoming. Appreciate seeing the "other side", as I've often wondered what it was like. I love the cool, crisp mtn mornings and then the afternoon warm up. Mountain backpacking at it's finest. Thanks for sharing, Tom
@@BryanDeLay It's pretty much my beginning itinerary every time I make a trip out west. I take I-80 and get off in Laramie and head to Centennial, Wyo for a few supplies. Set up base camp in the Libby Creek area and spend a few days in the Snowies. Exhale and unwind after the long drive, get my mountain mindset going. Exit via Saratoga and head for the Winds. It just works out well for me.
That sounds like a good plan Tom. I'll have to check out the Libby Creek area. Normally I camp at Vedauwoo Climbiing Area, about 20 east of Laramie, and the next day drive to Boulder, WY.
As always, such a great video. Thank you for taking us along. You gave me another place I'd like to go. Plan on revisiting Glacier next year. Wanting to take the Boulder Pass Trail (Kintla Lake) to Hole-in-the-wall.
Way to go rescuing that poor sheep you guys. That was crazy I can’t say I’ve seen anything like that before. The Lake was really beautiful that you camped at.
Enjoyed seeing more of the Routt National Forest and seeing some of the Mt. Zirkel Wilderness I didn't venture into in 2018. The fly fishing was too good on the Elk River to wander too far away from it.
Glad you enjoyed the video John! I bet the fly fishing was good on the Elk River. I think the Steamboat Springs side of the wilderness is much more crowded.
As always Beautiful walk in the wild! Loved the river views/sounds. Thank you both for rescuing the sheep! Good to see the dog on the trail. I always bring my dog, but not for as long a time, and I usually carry the food. The Mt range is gorgeous, I liked that zoom in!
Thank you Kara! Should've mentioned it took us about 45 minutes to get the sheep out of the ditch. On the others side of the high peaks is Steamboat Springs and I'm pretty certain that part of the wilderness would've been very crowded.
Hello Bryan, another great trip & video. Looked like perfect weather the whole time. Kudos that you both helped that sheep. I wouldn’t been able to pass by a struggling animal either. 👍✌️
Glad you enjoyed the video Chris. In this case I was wanting to backpack somewhere in Colorado that I'd never been before and since I was coming from Wyoming I researched wilderness areas in north Colorado. I had heard some good things about Mt. Zirkel Wilderness so I ordered a map and planned the trip from the map.
Great trip Bryan and David! You saw some beautiful country! Fun to see the sheep- I thought maybe David was in the bushes picking berries, but, wow, you were there at just the right time to save one of the sheep! Pretty mountains, lakes and streams. Too bad about all the blow downs... I wonder how many people are hiking the CDT every year... maybe they are doing sections. Thanks for showing us the Mt. Zirkel wilderness!! 👍👍
Thanks Jennifer! I don't think that sheep would have survived the night. I'm not sure how many people thru-hike the CDT each year, but in early September whether north bound or south bound most thru-hikers would have already done this section of Colorado.
Awesome video! Good to see Coach and Buddy too! So awesome you were both able to save that sheep! Thanks for the great trail views. It looks like a beautiful area! 😀
So far I really like the Duomid, although there are trade offs. On the pro side the Duomid is quicker to erect, the height is greater when the shelter is staked down close to the ground, the 9.2 feet length is really nice, and it offers better wind protection. On the con side it does not have the openness when it's zipped up during rain. However I created a hack for this as shown in my Naked Ground, Hangover, and Haoe Lead video.
@@BryanDeLay Bryan's comments are in the video @ 9:45 to 13:00 in the Naked Ground, Hangover, and Haoe Lead video. Always appreciate your insights! Thanks very much!
Those GPS based measurements are error prone. Back in September, we did a little experiment with a Garmin Fenix GPS Watch, a bicycle computer (calculates distance based on wheel rotation, so no GPS), and AllTrails using GPS on a Moto Power G7. We compared the reported distances to a listed trail distance of 4.4 miles. Our findings were: 1) watch was 2.3% shorter; 2) bicycle was 4.3% longer; 3) AllTrails was 18.2% longer. The watch claimed to use a multiband tech that helped make it more accurate. But I was a bit shocked by the large error of the phone based app. So, if you hike in an area where GPS signals are poor, the GPS device will take its best guess at distance.
Thanks for this great information! For about 17 years I was a very serious cyclist, so I'm very familiar with a bike computer distance based on the wheel rotation. If the bike computer and wheel circumference were calibrated correctly and the wheels stayed in constant contact with the ground, not going over jumps or rocks where the front wheel could spin freely, I would think the bike mileage would be the most correct. If I'm not backpacking I walk/run some nearby trails everyday and record it using a Gaia phone app. I've noticed that sometimes my maximum speed can be way too fast, so I've assumed that the phone lost contact with the GPS system for a moment or two and that caused the maximum speed to be off.
@@BryanDeLay Agreed. The wheel based measurement is very accurate when properly setup and calibrated. On the plus side, the woman who rode the route is a practicing mechanical engineer. The bad thing is we only made one traversal of the trail. Ten or more readings for each device would have given us more confidence in the results.
Hi Bryan, The quality of the images in the video is extraordinary! Thanks for sharing! I too saw a mileage discrepancy in the electronics I use. So I drove a loop in my neighborhood to record the mileage. Then walked it with my Garmin Etrex20 and my Garmin inReach mini. There were no overhead obstacles. Just a clear sky above. The Etrex20 measured exactly as my car odometer, but the inReach mini recorded the distance too short. Maybe because the intervals between each tracking point were set at 30 minutes and the inReach skipped some distance? A topo map really helps to pinpoint location.
Thanks J Mash! You may be right about the 30 minute interval. I'm not sure what interval David was using, but it may have been 30 minutes since he was tracking the entire trip. I mainly use my InReach mini as a communication device and rarely use it to track my trips. I do download the map to my Gaia phone app and use it to determine where I am from time to time especially on this trip to determine where we were on day two and where the trail was suppose to be.:)
8:04 As the bird fly's and as the human walks are always different. As the human walks can add 1/3 + more to every mile as the bird fly's. It's just to be expected and plan accordingly.
As the bird flies is a strange comparison when talking about GPS miles, since a GPS tracks every turn in the trail, or path walked. Second, it's not uncommon for GPS miles to vary slightly from miles indicated on a map, but never have I seen such a big variance as we experienced on this trip.
