There are certain things you should probably bring with you on a trail ride. Usually, the bare essentials consist of water, a pump or CO2, tube, tire levers, and a multi-tool. Now that you’ve collected your key survival pieces, how are you going to bring them along for the ride? Depending on who you ride with and what you see online, it can get a bit confusing figuring out the best option for carrying your gear. In this video, we explain a few of the popular options. Check it out!

That's a great idea. I currently use a team of Gurkhas who follow me, carrying the fluid on the backs of Himalayan Yaks. It's getting pretty expensive, so I'm thinking of the balloon option in bright green for visibility.

Sorry, I don't ride or equip myself in ways to make myself look cool... or cuz the pros do it or not do it. When I'm hitting trails that has me climbing for 7 strait miles, then some technical downs for another several miles, then up another set of climbs and more technicals for 24+ miles, I'll take the dorky looking camelBak that carries 3L vs a bottle or two on my frame. Screw looking cool. I'm out for myself.

I've never thought of having a water bottle attached to your bike cool and the bottle gets really dirty and has a tendency to fly off the bike when the trail gets gnarly. Hydration packs are cool to me, it centralizes everything: your water, food, tools and spares into one place not unlike the trend where you attach/store all you need all over your bike.

I got used to Camelbaks in the Marine Corps, and I still use them while hiking or riding. I prefer riding without it, but I like not being dehydrated more. If I am doing the local loop when it isn't hot, I can get away with no water, (Or just a bottle on the bike,) but for the long days and the hot climbs, I have to have the water. If you're a park rat or shuttle monkey, maybe you don't need one. For those of us that earn our turns or ride all day, a bottle won't cut it. I also hate mounting extra shit on my bike. On bike storage has improved a lot since the 80s, but I still associate on bike storage with products that scratch up your paint, bounce around, and eventually dump your gear off the side of a trail. I like the hip packs, but they aren't fat kid friendly. I have found that Camelbak's ultra runner packs are more comfy than some of the bike stuff. And if some trendslave endurbroh gets wound up about my choice of gear, that just makes me happier.

Yaaaaay I am not the only 1 who doesn't like strapping stuff to my bike, kinda hard to find these days. Funnily enough most people I've met actually like my hap pack saying that it really would be handy and nice :D. Have you tried a hip pack though? I have that Evoc pack and tho I might not be super fat or anything I am still no slim guy by any means and it fits me quite well, but yes it can be a bit annoying at times (excuse my wording here) depending on what roll it is resting on.
@NoBrakes23
@NoBrakes23 6 лет назад
boomerangfreak I had the Camelbak Palos for a while. I liked a lot of the features, but the magnet would not hold the drinking tube in place. I used a retractable key card retainer to fix that, (a Seth's Bike Hack,) but that was a kludgy fix. I will probably get another hip pack, as it was a nice way to get another liter of water for those long rides.

I personally don't like strapping stuff to my bike, I dunno I'd probably damage/puncture or lose it during a crash. I used to use a 16L backpack with a 2L bladder. Then after some back issues and realizing my backpack barely has anything in it and I usually come back with plenty water left in my bladder I switched to a hip pack, that exact evoc pack you showed in the video actually. I LOVE IT! It has plenty space for my essentials (and then some), the 1,5L bladder paired with a 750ml bottle on my bike gives me PLENTY water for a couple hours. The pack for me also sits better than my full backpack, it's less wobbly and leaves my back way less sweaty and sore. At this point I really don't care what people say about my hip pack, it's nice and it makes my bike look nicer not having silly stuff strapped to it.

One thing people usually don't realize is that they also keep your back (especially spine) from getting hit as hard or scraped up. It always feels better to ride without one and I usually do if the ride is short enough, but they still prove another surface to prevent harm just like gloves.

I use camelback and the main reason I didn't switch to bottle in races is that bottle likes to get out of cage (i've seen many bottles lost on start of race which is not nice for owners when it is very hot). Bottles used to get dirty more often and it is harder to get to water in bottle when u are riding gnarly trails - camelbacks are a lot of easier and if u put tube in mouth u are not involving hands any more while drinking. But in races most peaople use bottles - maybe they don't like fealing of having sweat on thair backs.

I wore a hydration pack with 3 litre bladder for a long time. But I realised that although my pack had a ventilated back panel, it still made me too hot, made my back sweat too much, and made me more dehydrated. Also the bigger the pack, the more you carry! I've switched to the Evoc hip pack and I love it. My big pack was comfy but was still a weight on my back and shoulders. I love having a cooler, drier back and lower centre of gravity. A bottle on the bike and 1 litre in the Evoc bladder is plenty for me now, and the pack has bottle holders for longer rides. I agree that a backpack can save your back in a crash, but wearing a back protector does the same job.

I don`t like having backpack on my back while riding, but since I got backpack for riding with hydration pack, i was reborn.Its way easier, faster and "safer" i guess. You don`t have to rech some awkward places on your bike to get your bottle. I don` even have bottle cage holes on my bike. And I always carry bunch of stuff with me. Food, 2l of water, tire, pump, multitool, wallet, food, my keys (they are like 200g alone). I don`t have to worry that I will lose my bottle somewhere on the trail, if its covered in mud and shit. The only thing I have to worry about is how much water do I have still left in the pack, because sometimes you think "Oh, I almost haven`t drank any water" and 5 minutes later you are sucking air. I`ll stick with the hydration pack

i think it really depends on the type of rider, if you're a youtuber or someone who likes filming videos, you're probably going to need one for all the equipment, but if you're a racer and trying to replicate how you would feel on race day, it might be better to go packless just because of freedom of movement and comfort, also cuts down a bit on weight. nice vid!! packs aren't dorky at all.

As I started progressing and going for more technical and dangerous singletrack or dh style trails I found that using a backpack/hydration pack was more comfortable for carrying my things when throwing the bike around or jumping, doubling also as a safety item for my back when i crashed. So long live the mtb hydration packs!!!

Where i am in summer its too brutal not to keep a good amount of water on you, but in winter most days you can get away with a water bottle and not wear a pack. I do like carrying the pack to throw my gloves tools and spare tube into.

Being dehydrated and heat exhausted is lame. I like the little kick I get from some cold H2O. Hydration packs work for military ops, hiking, biking, and skiing. True multi-sport use.

For really long rides in the extreme cold, packs are a must, as even the insulated bottles freeze up. So I wear one under my jacket if I'm out for more than an hour.

I run a One-Up component multi tool in steering tube, with a co2 canister attached. Spare tube strapped to the frame with a One-up components strap. And an insulated 24oz water bottle with Lezyne cage, that has never fallen out. And an IPhone in my pocket for all the instagram clips. But I’m also never afraid to bust out the hip back for longer rides when you need snacks and more water. I strongly believe they’re the best option if you absolutely need a pack, but honestly most people don’t. They just carry too much stuff for an hour or two long ride.

Keep up the great videos guys! I run a Dakine Hop Laps Gripper. Almost like a BC Research strap, but it has some more pockets. I also run 2 water bottles (XC Race Hardtail, Devinci Wooky). It’s hot here in SoCal, as you guys know, & having something swinging & sticking on my back is a no-no for me. Again, keep making rad videos!

Besides carrying water food tools and essentials hydration packs are great for spine protection. Love my EVOC 12L i crashed in sedona and it saved my back in a rocky section. Clown me all u want but I like the protection and ease of use👍

I love my Dakine Hot Laps hip pack. I use it more than my Skyline Camel Bak hydration pack now. Still love the back pack style but the hip pack stores plenty of water and keeps your back a little cooler.

I’m 52 and while I should be “lightening” my load I keep finding things to add. Water bottle AND hydration pack + tools + tp + food and even a filter (I do longish backcountry rides and have run out before...no fun.) I don’t race and want to live to ride another day!

Man I have been riding with a pack so long I feel odd when I am on a bike without one. My first pack I bought in the very early 90's didn't hold anything but water. I bought it because I was racing XC in N.C. and back then the XC course were not built by roadies. So they were tight twisty and had roots,rocks and fallen trees(one race I remember after pre ride the promoter went and cut down a tree as a surprise for us) everywhere . Back to my point there was no time to reach for a bottle . The hose was so much easier and now you can put tools, food, TP and first aid kit in your pack! ARWYP (always ride with your pack)!!

Great video! I drink a lot of water so a water bottle isn't enough for me. I used to wear back packs but now I wear fanny packs. Mine has a huge water bladder and I stick all my gear in it. I actually made my own fanny pack years ago out of my paintball harness to hold 2 water bottles before all these companies started making fanny packs. Having the weight lower on the hips vs on your back and shoulders makes a huge difference imo.

Dehydration is DORKY! I ALWAYS have my slim line small hydro pack on me when riding or even snowboarding after way too many times out riding being cotton mouthed and BONKING due to not enough hydration. Depending on temp and ride time or difficult climbs, I usually carry 1.5-2.5 liters. Also in my pack is a grumpy session worth of TP, crank bros multi tool, 4 short and 3 long zip ties, pump, tube, 4 tire irons & patch kit, spare derailleur hanger, and lightweight tire pressure gauge. I strap the race face pads on for the climbs. I really like being able to grab tube, bite drink and keep on the go, not having to stop, clear the gunk and mud off the bottle, wasting time just to get a drink. Just last week I used my hydro pack to wash some sweat caked dirt off my face and forehead after taking an impromptu "soil sample". Nothing dorky about staying hydrated whatever method you use. I could give a rats butt what "the pros" do. I do what works for me. Happy rolling.

Hydrate packs not only carry water, tools, pump, supplies and jacket if needed, they also protect your back and some have impact pads. Riding without a pack is lighter and it's nice to have your tools strapped or hidden on your bike but if you have a few bikes that could be complicated. Try putting a tube, tools, Co2 and your phone in a jersey back pocket and hit some rough descents, I think you might change your mind about that. The bottom line, a H-pack is an easy way to have everything you need for a ride in 1 place and ready for riding any of your Mtn bikes.

Hydration pack loaded when I’m out for more than 2 hours, scouting new stuff, or doing some trail cleanup. For the usual lunch and after work rides I rely on my backcountry research strap to have my back with the essentials just in case. It’s nice to have the bike ready to go and one less accessory to think about in order to get rolling.

Screw minimalism, I have the tool or spare I need for everything short of a broken frame or rim, *and* get to pull a cold sixer out mid-ride. Hell, one time I surprised my buddies with a box of donuts at the top.

I'm good either way. I still have my first gen Camelbak Mule. Has saved me on a couple crashes, too. Went over my handlebars and landed on my back. Felt like I landed on pillows....sort of. That has happened a few times. The Camelbak is still going! Anyway, off topic. Longer rides, I use a hydration pack. If I'm just doing a short ride, I will use a bottle and emergency "stuff" strap on the frame.

I ll go with Hydration pack because I carry crash gear for the way down and want to stay hydrated, as well as have extra water just in case. It also serves as protection for your back if you head over the handle bars and end up on your back! Ben there, done that, walked/road away. No school like old school.

For me pack has 2 key advantages, its ready whichever bike i choose to ride that day (1st world problem) and it keeps the dirt out of my spares and tools, which in the UK is important. Enduro racing requires quick access, but trail riding the extra 30 seconds to access a tube is no big deal for me.

My heavy osprey pack created a super sore spot in my lower spine that I've had for a month now. I'm trying a minimal camelback with water only on my back and move the rest of the weight down onto the bike into a water bottle cage tool holder. I like being able to take small sips during the ride to stay hydrated rather than stop to drink from a bottle with horse/cow poop on it.

I understand people who don't like wearing a pack of any kind. But, count me among those who prefer a pack. I have gone to great lengths to reduce the weight of my bike - within limits; I'm not a weight weenie. I climb on some technically demanding trails where the ability to move the bike around independently greatly increases my chances of success. Putting pounds of gear on the bike would negate those efforts. I have found the new lumbar style packs are the best option for me.
