Hiking Here we have 2 use cases: The first is the parent who knows nothing about MTB and has teenage children who want to MTB. The advice is to get an entry level bike, the so-called Entry Level, for hiking, so with a maximum excursion of 120mm. It can be either front or full, but full bikes cost more.
The second use case is for people who live in the city or in mostly flat places and are looking for a MTB to get to work, go for weekend rides in the park or in the hills riding mostly on dirt or forest roads. Again, a touring bike with a 120mm fork either front or full is more than fine.
Cross country (XC) bikes - have use cases that fit both hiking enthusiasts and professional cyclists or those who like to take part in competitions, so we find mtb's with different technical levels: Entry Level for beginners or occasional cyclists, Mid range for intermediate or experienced cyclists, and Top of the range for professional cyclists or those who take part in competitions.
Cross Country Marathon bikes are MTBs geared for those who enjoy long rides or multi-day competitions, on mixed routes and where several hours are spent in the saddle. They are light, agile and pedalable bikes, but also durable and comfortable due to a less aggressive geometry than Cross Country bikes.
Downcountry is a newly developed typology with the aim of coping better with modern cross-country trails, which are increasingly technical and demanding on the descent. This typology fits into the gap that existed between the Marathon with 120mm and the Trail with 140mm of travel, which we will see shortly afterwards, so the fork travel is 120-130mm and the angle is slightly more open than on the Marathon.
Trail bikes are versatile bikes, capable of adapting to various types of terrain, from flat to rough. They are usually full bikes with 130-140 mm of travel. The frame is sturdy and comfortable compared to the three previous types because the torso is more upright and the position less racing. They are suitable for those looking for an all-rounder, fun and reliable bike.
All-mountain bikes are bikes designed to tackle mountain trails with demanding climbs and technical descents. They are full bikes with 140-160 mm travel. The frame is strong and stable, but also light enough to allow good rideability. They are suitable for those looking for an adventure bike capable of overcoming obstacles and jumps.
Enduro: These are bikes designed for fast and aggressive descents, but also capable of climbing with a certain efficiency. They are full bikes with 160-180 mm travel. The frame is strong and reinforced, with a geometry that emphasises safety and control, and they are bikes that are mainly suited for difficult and steep downhill courses.
Freeride are bikes dedicated to extreme descents, with jumps, drops and tricks. They are full bikes with 180-200mm travel. The frame is very strong and heavy, with a geometry that favours manoeuvrability and responsiveness, so they are more suitable bikes for bike parks.
Downhill bikes are specialised bikes for fast descents, with little pedalling, and used for competitions or where there are lifts. They are full bikes with a fork travel ranging from 200 mm and more The frame is massive and rigid, with a geometry that guarantees maximum stability and aerodynamics
And lastly, Fatbikes are special bikes that have very wide wheels.
These characteristics make them suitable for difficult terrain such as sand, snow or mud. and they can be equipped with a fork or not.
