That is one beautiful bass! Nice of you to talk about EQ-settings, important stuff for us bassists. I had to do the same EQ discovery before christmas when playing in a musical with a big band and had to use both fretted and fretless basses to cover all songs. I could not get why my fretless did not have that distinct fretless sound until I boosted the mids around 1k...

Thank you, I love it! Absolutely! There are two approaches, but for the most part I’m eq-ing one way or another, be that through pickup selection or eq boosts. With this bass changing the EQ has a massive effect and really makes it possible to work on a huge range of material. I’m also finding that these new strings being a little smoother are facilitating an almost fretless vibe if you slide into the frets and apply a little vibrato, whilst you’re on the subject of Fretless! Will be looking for a higher quality Bass at some stage and I will look to MTD first I think. Great explanation Thankyou ! I also tried a Sandberg and liked it a lot. I think Sandberg for a Jazz and MTD for my overall Bass ⭐️

How do you feel about playing specifically an MTD through a tube amp vs solid sate? I felt like it filled in a lot of the mids on mine.

Got to Love MTDs my favourite basses. I only own a Kingston super 5 which was bought for me by my eldest boy (🤯) love the tones from it and it's a joy to play. Was using a vigier passion which, although was great, could never find the exact tone I was after then an ibanez 1205 both lefties neither are made any more. I prefer the Kingston to either of them

Alec M thanks man! Definitely a big number, but I’d never played a bass as good as this and still haven’t (including £8K+ foderas), so for that reason alone it’s worth it for me. Once you’re in this range it is incredibly hard to quantify value without playing the bass yourself, and what’s treasure to you may feel totally wrong to another player - a lot like putting on someone else’s tailor-made suit. T

@@TylerSpicer I know where you're coming from Tyler and I hope I didn't come across as running down the bass, far from it, I know how a quality instrument feels and plays and I'm sure the MTD fits the bill. Enjoy it for many years .

Nice bass man. But what was it about the Fodera you had that made you want to look for another high high end bass?
@TylerSpicer
@TylerSpicer 4 года назад
Thanks man! The electronics package wasn’t quite for me overall as it was an EMG PJ setup, and as 5 strings are my go-to, I rarely gig a 4. For those reasons I moved the Fodera on. However the Fodera was still an exquisite instrument, I just felt the range of sounds from the MTD felt more individual and versatile. T

Tyler Spicer ah ok didn’t realise your fodera was a 4. I want to try a fodera for myself one day. Cheers for the reply. Great content.
@TylerSpicer

James Cullum thank you for the kind words and support! Definitely try one if you get the chance, they’re exquisitely made, but I’d suggest starting with a standard as your first experience as they have a pretty universally comfortable feel whereas some of the very expensive customs I’ve tried have specs that are chosen by the original owner which can be very specific to their play style and preference. E.G. 36 inch scale 6 strings with 20mm spacing etc. The standards are made to just the same level level and feel great. T
@jjcbassguitars2114
@jjcbassguitars2114 4 года назад
Tyler Spicer I will give them a try soon. Not on my radar at the moment as I picked up a sadowsky nyc last month and I’m in need of a 5 string fretless currently and I don’t want to spend fodera or sadowsky money on something that may be used on 2/3 songs a set if you get what I’m saying. Maybe next year I’ll look for a top shelf fiver again like a fodera or MTD.
@TylerSpicer
@TylerSpicer 4 года назад
James Cullum nice! Which model NYC? I’m a big Sadowsky fan myself! I did the same - I ended up with a Sandberg VM 5 string second hand. Having both the MM pickup for those Musicman fretless style sounds and the spiltable coils made it a sensible choice for those odd occasions I need a fretless. T

That's what custom built basses cost now these days, I did a quote with Fodera for a simple 5 string bolt on construction for $12k. You definitely get what you pay for, I currently play a warrior bass and they're not cheap either. Factory built basses are great but if you want upmost quality built by the hands of wonderful luthiers, that's a price most are willing to pay including me
