MTG - AGGRO DECKS ARE HARD TOO (GAMEPLAY) - MAGIC THE GATHERING

This is a gameplay video of a MTG match I played recently in a high stakes tournament. I chose this match because I think it illustrates that Aggro decks are hard to play too and can involve a lot of hard decisions as well.
The deck in question is Gruul Aggro in Historic, but the concepts that I talk about in the key turns should apply to every Magic: the Gathering deck (and especially aggro decks), so the goal is that this is useful for you even if you don't play this deck or format in particular.

Thanks for the very interesting and thorough analysis. At 8:53, when Ken Yukihiro plays Growth Spiral but doesn't activate Ooze, I think there may be a few more things we could consider: 1) You have no playable spells or abilities, so once you skip combat, your client auto-passes to end of turn. That should be a moderately strong indication to Ken that you have no instants and that he therefore shouldn't play around anything. Though maybe pros in important matches do regularly bluff by e.g. setting stops at their end-step but not in their second main phase, or soft-passing turn with Enter. 2) If Ken somehow *does* expect you to have Bonecrusher Giant, he could have eaten with his Ooze before casting Growth Spiral, and thereby threaten double-activating Ooze in response to Stomp. So why didn't he? He could've made a mistake (e.g. he only thought of Stomp after he'd already cast Growth Spiral), or he might have thought the play I'm suggesting was bad (why?), or maybe he hoped to find a blue land with Growth Spiral so he could cast one of his interactive spells or another Growth Spiral? In the latter case, he wouldn't have had open mana to play around Stomp, anyway. I have a weak impression that these considerations together don't entirely make sense unless he made a mistake.
@PVDDRMTG
@PVDDRMTG 3 года назад
The Arena stop makes sense, but it's hard to pay attention to this all the time. The reason he didn't activate Ooze first was that he had another Growth Spiral, so if he drew a blue source he could play it that same turn, yeah

Oh my god. I usually try to read the types of blocks my oponents could do before chosing my attacks, but I usually don't play around what I think that THEY think that I have (usually I only play around what I think they have, with only one layer/steps). That was a really valuable lesson, thanks Paulo! About this kinda of video, yeah I would LOVE to have more of those! As a Gruul player, this video was very insightful. Even though I could see a good amount of these plays, some lines I would have missed 100% and I could have definitely have lost that game if I wasn't playing as much attention as you did. I also agree that CoCo is superfluous in Gruul: I am playing a version with none and It is actually an improvement, because relying on my 4 mana play to get good enough bodies on the field is not as good as having reliable cards that I know how good they can be

As mathematician I can appreciates more an aggro deck than a control one, this because there's much more perfect information about plays at the start of the game: in game theory the "selten's horse" explain well this type of game, choosing the right path to optimize the chance of winning. Control decks are difficult too, but the randomness grows turn by turn not permitting you to predict the right moves.

Amazing video, I especially liked the part where you pick up on why they didn't activate the Ooze and then try to represent the card they are already playing around! Sometimes the best approach is to win quickly, but sometimes patience pays off! Keep the vids coming 😊

Honestly, I feel like you can just talk about whatever is interesting to you that happened recently and that would provide high quality, entertaining content that would be diverse. Game play, meta analysis, deck/card choices, testing methods, good/bad habits. If it's interesting to you it's probably interesting to us.

Great video! This game was a good example of a game in which you did draw better than they did, but a little less precise play would have gave them lots of outs. Your play completely shut the door for them. Congratulations on the weekend results!
