Am I mistaken or is Virulent Plague not just a straight up win on scapeshift? LVD even brought it up as a card to search. Why not just get it and win?

Most Field decks will have answers like Ugin. Given that we had boardwipes in hand it didn't seem necessary. Teferi into Scapeshift caught me off guard.

@@LegenVD Gotcha. It seems like the Ugin is kind of a win for them anyway. Probably the best way to win is to just get the combo fast and sometimes it just doesn't work out.

@@jheckie14 I gotta say, after some personal experience playing against scapeshift... it would have been plenty interesting for me to warch LVD slam a hard counter and the opponent just scoops.

I enjoy them both, but I think myself and a lot of other people play Standard mostly when it first comes out, then once Standard becomes stale we jump into Historic.

My issue with historic is the power level is so high that though I want to play fun stuff like zombies + Lilianas, anything even slightly janky just feels awful when you get curbstomped by mono blue or ramp/field/ugin or mono red. Standard power level is obscene and historic is therefore even more so

I've been watching your videos for quite some time now and I think the second match in this video is the first time I ever was not agreeing with the way you played (think getting the plague would have been my priority). Which is quite insane, you defenetly are an excellent player, considering all the options, which I often would miss. Love your videos, they brighten up my day.

I agree with his reasoning though. Scapeshift is pretty rare in Field anymore because it's often too slow. Zombies aren't hasty, so a Scapeshift followed by a board wipe really hurts the Field deck as Scapeshift is often a "all in" approach.

Jumpstart has been great so far. I have seen a couple of goblin decks since jumpstart and they all played very different fun combos. I enjoyed even the games that I lost against them. I think Moxus Goblin King is a fair version of Winota and the new old Krenko could go wide against my elves. I am very much looking forward to the next crazy decks that you are going to come up with.

Goblins is strange. I’ve been playing quite a bit of Historic recently around low Mythic and half the time I see that deck it looks like a bad aggro deck and I destroy them... and the other half they Prospector into a super early Muxus who then allows them to draw and play their entire deck through Ringleaders and absolutely murder me. I agree, it’s an interesting deck.

Winota also died to removal. Doesn't mean it was a great idea.

@@besNait Winota could kill on turn 3, requiring instant speed removal to deal with and being able to win off a regular go wide aggro plan even if every winota died. This deck requires 8 mana to assemble the combo pieces and can't win in a timely fashion if they get removed. Pretty big difference.

I'm well aware that Winota was stronger, but I want to highlight that argument "dies to removal" doesn't mean much. IMO cards that enable 2 cards infinite combo on turn 4 should still be avoided because they can cause unfun/non interactive game play. The fact that this deck is weaker then current top meta just highlights how insane other decks are.

Why not just go for plague vs field of the dead? With that they just... lose, right? Am I missing something?

It's probably a good idea to bring it to gain some time, but Field of the Dead won't "just lose" because of it, no. They still ramp into some big payoffs like Krasis, Ugin, Nissa, some of them being able to deal with a simple enchantment. It's like cutting Tron of Tron, at some point you still get crushed if you don't manage to sneak under the payoffs.

Does Mazemind Tome replace Treasure Map in majority of decks then? Or is this limited to only certain kinds of decks? Still relatively new to the game.

LVD, I'm thinking of building this deck in paper magic, do you think it is competitive enough to keep up on the modern level? A friend of mine told me the deck would be to slow, but I think it has enough disruption to get to the combo, what do you think? Keep up the great vids!

I've been tryint to make it work with vampire theme but it faires poorly against goblins which are everywhere. If you already play Golos, you should probably play a phyrexian tower as a 1-of.

@@literallysomedudeliterally9470 I think he means since this combo works identically putting in lifelink creatures so the combo kicks off on turn 4 or 5 when exquisite blood hits the board. Much like he was able to do with the tome in these matches

@@mattd3978 exactly i created a deck mono black with 96% of the creatures having lifelink and over 40% flying 100% vampire. Aside sanguine and exquisite i also have several sorceries and one or two instants that kill creatures and trigger life gain or opponent life loss. The only downside i believe is that the deck relies too much on the sanguine/exquisite combo for the win. It has 3 of each just in case and 3 or 4 (dont remember atm) cards that look for them. But i like the scry/extra draw strategy of this deck. Its much better and effective to get the combo cards faster. I think in going to re-build that deck using this as inspiration.

Yes. Some of the cards are Historic format only, and many are reprints already in Arena however. I think it was 37 new cards introduced.

What happens if opponent has their own Exquisite blood in play? Do you just keep sucking each other's blood indefinitely?

No because Exquisite Blood triggers off of you making an opponent lose life, not you yourself losing life. If both people had the combo in play at the same time, it would be a race to see who could deal a damage or gain a life first.

No. Either Vito or Blood requires an action to trigger the combo, which is opp losing life or you gaining life. Only one side of the board will trigger the combo.

Historic is at its worst IMO when pros are testing for an event (like right now). But even then, the Play Queue is such a breath of fresh air with some of the most fun magic around. It's a shame the Jumpstart acquisition model is kinda sketchy.

It's still a tricky combo to set up, so without interaction we'll be dead before we can win. Both cards are also quite bad to draw in multiples.

That may be, but some decks just have bad matchups against certain other decks. A pure combo deck will struggle against a counterspell deck for example. Losses don't necessarily equate to a bad player. :)

With the additions of jumpstart goblins have become EXTREMELY annoying, Muxus is just busted and if you hit well you can easily kill the opponent the turn it comes down

@@popspops1611 It is "rigged" in a few well known ways. Hand smoother and matchmaker are just a couple of them. If your opponents are being selected for you based upon their deck, I wouldn't exactly call that "not rigged".
