Recently got my high school friends into Old School. They have sold all of their old school cards years ago, but I let them proxy, and it is tons of fun playing the game as it was originally intended!
Old MTG is something everyone should experience at least once. It is so different from today's Magic.. yet so similar. I would encourage anyone/everyone to just make some jank proxies and do it for fun at least once. It is so absurdly wild what could go down. The lines between colors were drawn differently back then as well. You can find more info in the necronomicon.
Check out Brian Weismans Old Skool Singleton Primer. He is a pioneer in MTG, and still plays Old Skool to this day. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HHbwNRehhUw.html
Necronomicon! Such a good video Mox Man. Loved the card drops and extra editing you did there. The first "OG" card that really got me interedted in things was Red Elemental Blast, I was like, "Wait...what!? Red counterspell!?!?" The concept of using these older cards to open conversations is superb. I like the idea of incorporating old school cards in decks to fuel conversations.
When Alliances came out I traded for 4 forces of will cuz I love blue. I build a counterspell recursion deck and played against a twist walk power 9 deck . When I won my opponent immediately went and bought a jester's cap just to stop force of will.
Necronomicon! I like Nether Shadow, Meekstone, Natural Selection, and Mana Short as my underrated picks. And I see what you did there with Mana Breach. Boomstick💥😎
Not only does the Necronomicon write about the differences between life and death, and how to cross them, but also how much color "hate" was around in the early years. Cards that destroy all lands or cards of the opposing color were pretty common, also the elemental blasts. And we had CoPs, something nobody would include in the deck these days, and only few did 25 years ago.
Heh, funny that you mentioned Zuran Orb, Balance, and Land Equilibrium in this video. I used to have a deck with all three, and a ton of mana rocks. It was obnoxious. Slow, but obnoxious. I just bought an UNL Wheel of Fortune, since I was able to get it at the price that Revised ones were two years ago. Got a small stack of Alpha basics too. I couldn't pass Alpha forests up for $11 like wtf man. I too try to get stacks of cheapo old cards just to have. I don't care that The Fallen sucks, it's old and cool looking.
I was about to preorder the fallout deck set, but I looked back at the sealed purchases I made the past year(some good some bad) and I realized that if I had gone for singles I'd be better off right now. So instead In ordered all the shocks and a bunch of other cards I had pending lol boooomstick 💥
So speaking of cheap. I picked up a 4 set of all the commons in unlimited for around $200. That's cheap considering Giant growth, Lightning bolt, Dark ritual to name a few were around $15 each during the height. Got a collector lotus for 2k. That was over 6k in 2021. Moxes are $500. also I like how you mentioned foil. Everyone seems to overlook the DCI foils. I got foil Ball Lightning, original picture for $20 each. There are deals to be had everywhere. I know of people who sell old and foil lands exlcusively on ebay and they are cleaning up. Still lets look at new cards. Ikoria variants are spiking in value. Throne of Eldraine, Theros, 2021 and more all had variants like this. Get them in foil, they are high value cards. Necronomicon
Oath of Ghouls, Niall Sylvain, Inner Sanctum all great prices I hit up this week. And yeah I got some old school foils Inc that awesome Mortal Combat! Necronomicon 💀
Just picked up my 1st Beta Rare! It's only a lifelace, but didn't think I'd ever see a Beta Rare for $33 ever again. I'll stash it away in the ol necronomicon 😊
Banding is actually a very strong combat mechanic, but a lot of the cards with banding are just overcosted. So it's just very misunderstood, and totally underrated.
@@allancook5235 OK, so another one not getting how good banding is, not a surprise. Gotta have some suitable creatures, for example regeneration. If so, banding on blocks is almost unbeatable.
Necronomicon’s 2nd Appendix (Boomstick Ed.) states players using Recycle, Fastbond, Memory Jar, LED, Concordant Crossroads, Argivian Arch. & Retreat to Coralhelm will not soon be forgotten!
So I appreciate the video, but unfortunately you didn't tell us anything we didn't already know. We all know mtg market sucks and has for years. And the ones you can thank for this are the very "heros" of the community you all flock to. Alpha investments, channel fireball etc. All of these guys buy up huge chunks of the market upon release (over 20% of the stock)You all listen to "market advice" from the very people whom create that market! Fishy? Yes yes I think so
Finally some real talk on these old cards. A lot of them really aren't that pricey ever, and if you don't buy online, even cheaper. Just have to know how to wheel and deal, even shark a little if you must. Extra tip, never deal with anyone who 'knows what they got." They'll overvalue every time.
Great video my only comment is you can get revised cards for even cheaper than unlimited, and you can certainly get foreign legends and dark cards for much less than their English counterparts
Hey Keith 100% big difference in price but Just like the deeper rich colors an knowing the print run is a little tighter by a few million cards muhahaha
Necronomicon! Thanks! Loved this post!!! Have full sets of The Dark, Fallen Empires, Arabian Nights, Ice Age, Revised (including some alternates) Exodus, Tempest, The Urzas, etc. in NM. Just kept them in binders. Stopped playing in 1999. Just got back into Magic. Crazy to see how much some of those have appreciated…and it’s a low market! So much fun to hear about some of those cards here. Glad I found your channel. More, please!
Love he old school cards and the idea you can get them cheap is correct, I looked at a few after I watched this video, some VERY cheap cards for next to nothing just crazy
I don't care what fancy schmancy cards wotc prints, nothing beats original cards. Jester's Cap may be considered underpowered, but that original artwork is perfection. I have many copies of it, and even several from 5th ed. The only newer cards I actively pursue are the retro frame reprints. They aren't "quite" the same as original, but close enough.
Yet Boil is legal in Modern, lol. (Weird huh?) Does anyone even trade cards in person anymore? That was the most fun of going to Magic tournaments. (It is how I got most of my original 4 horsemen cards back in the day).
This whole show is a MESS. All these random cards are presented as fomo yet they wont fit most playable formats besides edh... Hate cards are not fun in edh because you make 1 player not participate. Dont boil someones islands. Not cool.
Collector edition basic lands for commander decks are an awesome affordable way to treat myself. Most are under $4 and 99% of other players I've met will never complain about using them
Yes, there is a huge difference in game play comparing the old cards to the newer ones. You can really make a surprise play using a much older card when playing Commander. Thank you for the video Mox Man. I hope Disney does not have another flop with the Deadpool Wolverine movie. Unfortunately, as of late, Disney has ruined the Star Wars, Marvel, and Indiana Jones Franchises. They also ruined the Willow story as well. Necronomicon. Shop Smart, Shop S-Mart. Good advice on the old cards. Hey....What's that? Why it's Mana Breach!
I have sold almost all of my bulk collection and put it in reserved list goodies. Even cut down the amount of commander decks and put them towards RL. I literally only have my 6 commander decks and cards I may play with
I think the message is: everyone was worried that M30 might destroy the market, so everything went on a downward spiral. Now we can see that it didnt actually effect the market much at all, the cards have stabilized and so they will now go into normal growth, so if you dont have duals and want them, get them now!
I still want to make a color hate EDH deck. Only issue is you will definitely have useless cards in hand at certain times, that you will have to figure out how to discard, for other cards you need.
