I'm glad I bought a Commander 2014 deck set a couple months ago for $126 shipped. I've been liking these precons for Commander and looking forward to getting the 2016 set.
Nice, I bought couple 2014 decks from my Walmart just couple weeks ago. Rollback to $31, solid investment. If this movie ever makes it to the big screen, we might see a surge in players ;)
I actually just ordered these! 2013-2015! Got the box of 5 for each one. I got them to play with though. Now I don't know if I should open them! I spent the past week or so researching them. I might have to buy up the rest of these now!
It sometimes pays to invest in those premade decks, your right. When Stronghold came out, there were premade decks that contained Ensnaring Bridge; you always got a guaranteed Ensnaring Bridge in that deck and look where that card is now. It took ages to get where it is now, however...
SOLID video, good analysis and even better advise. I still pay rent and drink cooking oil myself. I see mtg as an investment for my mental wellbeing :)
Rudy i´d really like a video on insventements on sealed decks if its profitable as a long term insvestement or is something not to approach. when i talk about sealed decks is more like from revised to maybe the today's starter decks
I bought 15 BFZ fat packs when they first came out. They were sold out that day, I had to go to 4 different LGS and many Wal-Marts The full art lands, chance of 1st print expeditions, and the fact they all sold out in minutes really makes them a GREAT investment. I predict $150-$200 after 3-5 years
Oh man. Reading this comment 6 months later sure is interesting. This set was massively overprinted and today you can grab a fat pack on the internet for as low as 45-50 bucks. I wouldn't hold my breath this is gonna get into 150 range even in 5 years. Seems like you picked the wrong set for the long game.
thanks for the advice about elevating from gamer to major investor. do you still feel the same about someone wanting to buy a single box of the new sets and hold onto it for example?
Hey Rudy, How do you know when MTG stops printing a set? Do they make it publicly known from the beginning or gauge by demand? Appreciate the videos. Keep it up! Adam.
Well, you are right about how most people feel about CM14. When I see the set symbol, I'm just like "Eww!". However, I see these products all the time at my local WALMART in all 5 colors and they are begging to be sold. I'm talking they've been on the shelf for weeks, they've been in piles, they're marked 35% OFF covering a 20% OFF covering a 15% OFF sticker... I don't think the supply is as dry as you think, because I'm pretty sure I could pick up all five colors for just over $100 if I really needed.
Don't blame you for upping the price- if people want to compete with u and list at lower price , they will, then you would prob have to adjust. and thanks for telling us its too high of a price haha.
I want to say this as a avid commander player. yes commander products are very much so something an investor should commit to. but, as an avid, there are specific sets to invest in. is 2014 at the top? no, not really. but possibly in the future there will be a standard set the makes them valuable to a degree. '13 and '15 were amazing for me as a seeker and I would buy all but one of those 10 from '13 and '15. Don’t get me wrong. '14 is unique and has strong value in it... if you can sell it all as one... in the future. so far I still would not buy the '14 over the '15. and I have bought 2 from each set. except '14. it was a cute set. but it needed more. more over, as I hinted at before. there might be a tone when a new block/set comes out that puts cmdr '14 through the roof. other then that people new to magic and even commander will be enticed by the planeswalker commander entry to the format.
Outside of old duals, what would you recommend in hoarding priority for singles that are not on the reserved list. I was considering investing in khans/onslaught/zendikar fetches (because it's all about the fetch) but I see groves, horizon canopy, $$lilly/jace, new ravnica shocks, krakas ect and i just want to buy everythign even though my budget isn't too strong. What would you considering investing in if i was to stick to something singles wise?
playable lands are always a good investment. standard is horrible for investing, and modern is up in the air both for how often cards will get reprinted and if modern remains as a big format or not in the future. the only real safe investment are reserve list cards and sealed product with limited print runs (modern master/eternal master boxes, stuff like commander arsenal, etc.)
so aim for just lands with high play ability and reserved list cards? Sounds like going straight for fetch lands and old duals. That is something can get behind though :).
Also +Alpha Investments We all know you love to invest and make money, but on the same token, you must like to play Magic. What is your favorite format/deck?
If Martin Shkreli contacted you and said he had X hundreds of thousands, or X millions of dollars to invest in MTG cards and wanted to partner with you for a share of the profits, would you do it?
Once you have 1x/4x of every card you can do both...invest and play. Complete sets for standard are as much as a booster box, 4=all you ever need to play, period. THINK RUDY....Think.
I figured out what he means by symbolism. RUDY 2008? $8 dollar haircut? The modern format starts with.. 8th edition. BUY MODERN MASTER BOXES RIGHT NOW BEFORE RUDY!!!
This guy is hilarious, but I've never been able to figure out the symbolism he says he has in his videos. Anyone know the significance of him pouring himself vegetable oil retrieved from his box? Is he just trying to make the point that Magic investing is risky and requires full commitment/short-term costs?
If you don't want to invest in an $8 hair cut every two weeks then you should invest in a $30 pair of hair clippers. They should last you several years.
Maybe I'm late to the party but I swear his videos aren't as script free as he makes them out to be. in the last some odd videos I've seen SOMETHING gets knocked over. Funny and I like it but eh... idk.
His videos are for educational purposes, not personal gain. And he's probably slaying on the Patreon because people like the straight talk. I think it's brilliant
He told people not to buy Commander products from his store, not to just not buy from his store period. Also, it's not like Commander products are the only sources of revenue for his business.
I like that you can admit you're partially just addicted to buying Magic product. I see that a lot. As someone who tends to prefer extremely short term, high risk investments I see people load up on things like these commander boxes and sealed product talking like they're going to make money and I'm like "Dude, when the fuck are you actually going to see a return on that, playboy, do you even know?" I mean it's always good to START investing in that sort of way for the long term at some point but if you're not also making money in the now then who cares? The only people who are making a constant income from investments that take 5-10 years to reach fruition are people who made one of those investments 5-10 years ago and kept making them at a constant since that point. Which means you can make money consistently from that kind of investing but you basically have to spend money...and then keep spending money for five years straight until you finally hit that first profitability point. Obviously that is only possible for someone already possessing a HIGHLY disposable income. I think it's good of you to be like, "Bro don't fuck around with this dumb shit if you basically work at a Good Burger."
I still have a sealed Counterpunch. (from the 1st commanders print) That reprint on Scav Ooze kinda screwed me a bit but I'll still sit with. I honestly don't have shit for money, but here recently I have been selling my singles just to get sealed product. I only own a few sealed things, but I enjoy keeping things sealed, but when financial problems occur sometimes I have to let go of things. My friends call me a walking price guide just cause I constantly watch single prices. But you helped inspire me to get away from singles and just hold on to sealed product.
The problem is they are already too expensive. I saw all the 2014 decks all over the country when I drove from NYC to LA a few months ago. But, at $40+ a pop retail it's a hard sell. Then you figure if you really want to play EDH these are way too weak. I like the product but Wizards need to put more value & reprints into them so they are competitive right out the box.
the Commander series decks are the most powerful preconstructed product Wizards have recently been releasing, and they already pack a tonne of value with relevant reprints and powerful cards. What more could you want? How can you complain about the high price and the uncompetitive power level at the same time? I think they're an amazing introductory product and most reviewers do too.
avery hola You can't build a 4 color deck without the land base if they don't have the right set up, like I said they will flop. Now the Clash Pack did have Windswept Heath so you never know.
As a fellow alternative investor, I am wondering if you could do a video focusing on the logistics of holding physical property as part of a portfolio. Specifically, thoughts on secure storage, insurance against fire/theft, selling product efficiently, etc. Understand if you can't be too specific for security purposes, but even general thoughts would be interesting. Thanks, and keep up the good work.
