The fact that Umezawa's Jitte, by itself, makes this set better than a handful of other sets combined says a heck of a lot about the preferred sidearm of Shogunate era police. They definitely knew how to keep the Shogun's peace.

I agree it's a good card, and I suspect the police you talk about were proficient at their jobs - however I can't think that the two are in any way contingent on each other.

@@christopheraaron1255 That is correct. I felt like giving some RL historical context to one of my favorite cards not making a direct comparison or evaluation of such. Also comes from being a fan of Usagi Yojimbo whom features Shogunate officials from time to time using jitte.

The art of Sickening Shoal is just horrific. MTG art has depicted many brutal kill spells over the years involving blood and gore. Flaying, gutting, needling, etc. But imagine waves of spirits spewing endless putrid bile over you so rank that you choke to death just from the smell.

The funny thing about the Jitte was that it was included in a rat precon. You could buy the precon and flip the Jitte for 10 dollar profit.

Worth noting with Tendo Ice Bridge is that it has been basically powercrept by Aether Hub, which works with Energy instead of charge counters on the land itself, which is a bit better against stuff like land destruction. There are some outlier situations where the Bridge will be better (there are situations where shock lands are better than og duals), but on balance it's going to be a bit worse, especially in modern which doesn't have wasteland. I wouldn't expect it to receive many more points outside of a standard reprint.
@filipefernandes8669
@filipefernandes8669 2 года назад
Actually not really, because aether hub's ability that generates energy can be responded to. While Tendo's can't, so if you opponent has something like ghost quarter they can denny you the right color, or even cast stuff in response to the trigger while you' don't have the energy. Over all neither land is that great and you're probably better served with some other 5 mana land, but if anything Tendo is the better card. Unless ofc other energy cards get involved.

Tendo Ice Bridge in Standard interacted favorably with the Ravnica bounce lands. Most of the decks that could profitably run bounce lands (risky when there was a Magnivore LD deck running around) ran Tendo with bounce lands. Jitte was so format defining that Jitte supremacy was a good portion of the format it was legal in. Luckily it was available enough that the price didn't get too crazy (it was in the Rat's Nest preconstructed decks that sold for 10 dollars and you could find at Walmart).

In my opinion, easily one of the best things about Kamigawa (not that I can be nostalgic for a block that came out when I was 3) is the art. Hokori, Dusk Drinker is an example of something so abstract yet amazing. Almost as amazing as the glorious and elusive "Top 10 Vintage Cards (Minus Power 9)"! But still, definitely up there.

When Kamigawa was released, I think people at the time thought it was an under powered set. But the farther away we've gotten from it versus cards that exist now, Kamigawa has some extremely potent cards and interactions.
@celebrim1
@celebrim1 2 года назад
I feel Kamigawa block represents pretty close to what power level all sets should have. Other than the Jitte, which needed to be limited to only getting counters when it did combat damage to an opponent, I don't feel they got much wrong. At the time though, I felt Kamigawa was not only not down powering, but pushing, as the dragons in the block were probably the most powerful creatures that had been printed to that time and I felt that it represented a trend toward making creatures that were overwhelming win now cards.
@GilroyIronheart

Kamigawa has the misfortune of being the successor to Mirrodin, and it’s definitely less powerful by comparison. But the proximity of the two did lead to cards like the Vintage playable Kataki. I’m interested to see if Kataki gets a new card in Neon Dynasty with technology having taken over so much.

Regarding the Shoals: I thought discarding a card will always just pay for the X Mana, but you will always have to pay the two black mana. Am I just confused by his wording or am I misunderstadning the card? Because if you would have to pay the two black mana, the card would seem really bad to me.
@curtin1107
@curtin1107 2 года назад
You don't have to pay the colored pips. Exiling a card lets you skip out on paying its mana cost entirely, not just the X part of the cost.
@CanadianBaconPwnage
@CanadianBaconPwnage 2 года назад
When it asks for a Mana Value (Converted Mana Cost in old terms) of X, whatever the Mana Value of the card you exile is will be the value of X for the effect. Exiling a card is enough to make casting the card completely free, colored Mana and all. The Mana Value is just so the card's effect actually does something when cast. Example: if you discard Giant Growth to Nourishing Shoal, you would only gain 1 life. But if you discard a Collosal Dreadmaw, you would gain 6 life. In both cases, you cast Nourishing Shoal without paying for ANY of its Mana cost, including colored Mana. I hope that made sense.

I've always wondered why Kamigawa Block was considered "weak"... they have lots of good cards for competitive and casual. While I agree that there ARE some cards where I question the sobriety of the designer of the card like Shimatsu the Blood Soaked and Numai Outcast, I remember more good cards than bad. Some good ones outside the ones listed in Nizzahon's 3 videos about this block that I can think of are: The 5 "Star" dragons are all decent to good, the shoals give free spells so its good for an ambush, Meloku turns your lands in to 1/1 flyers. It also sports a couple of cards that are fun to use in casual games like Arashi, the Sky Asunder, Sakashima the Impostor, the Kirin cycle, Reiki (when you play a legendary spell, draw a card), and the original "flip cards" (which can be annoying to read but whatever). These aren't strong, but continually flipping creature's P/T, killing them with their own power and constantly coming in as a different creature are all fun things to pull off! Really, the ONLY thing I can say I hate about the sets is the set's naming convention. It sounds like it's trying too hard to be Japanese and overly dramatic. It just annoys me to read names like: Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Yomiji, Who Bars the Way, Opal-Eye, Konda's Yojimbo (cant you say bodyguard???) and "That which was taken". It's purely aesthetic and just my personal taste, which is why I dont even consider it an actual strike towards the set.
@riccardocalosso5688
@riccardocalosso5688 2 года назад
It was considered weak because the myrrodin block that was right before it created decks like affinity and kci, so most kamigawa cards failed to make an impact, and those who did ended up powering those decks, leaving many to think (wrongly) that the sets didn't impact the game at all.

Mirrodin wasn't just the block immediately before Kamigawa, it was the first block with the modern card face. At the time, it wasn't clear if Mirrodin was going to be the new intended power level -- plenty of other CCGs have had actual power creep like that. Kamigawa seems "weak" in comparison. It doesn't help that a lot of the *signature* elements of Kamigawa ended up being fairly weak. Spirit tribal? Good now, but it wasn't at the time. Splice onto Arcane? Never quite worked out in practice. Though I do think it was underrated at the time. It's a lot of card advantage, just at the cost of a lot of tempo. Samurai? Which were more or less the face of the set? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think a single one appeared in any of these three top tens. Credit the kinda bad Bushido mechanic. Legends Matter is basically just "downside matters" (and was harsher then than it is now, due to rules differences). It's a block that does have a ton of strong cards, even quite deep lineups of them, but they had more impact on non-rotating formats than they did on Standard, and those cards aren't the ones people wanted/expected to be great.

To anyone wondering how standard playable this whole block was: turn 1 you play land. Pass. Opponent plays land. Ornithopther. Mox. Frogmite. Pass. Turn 2 you play land and pass or any other crappy 2 mana legendary shitstain on card board. Opponent plays land cranial plating... you concede. The whole block... every single card was shit in comparisson to any card from Mirrodin. And afterwards when Ravnica came around it was immediately snuffed out of every competitive deck... damn Ravnica pre constructed deck would steamroll any "kamigawa block" deck.
