So, first things first with the new USRA Heavy Pacific from MTH’s Premier Line. This model is not 100% accurate to the real USRA Heavy Pacific, and the model I have here, Maine Central 470, wasn’t actually a USRA product at all in the real world. And yet, since getting an accurate Maine Central C-3 class Pacific is unlikely, and MTH never claimed this to be such a model, an equivalent engine of roughly the same dimensions and lettering will do. Therefore, I won’t be judging this model on prototypical accuracy, as much as I will on build quality, detail, paint, and operation. I may be a bit of a rivet counter, but you’ll see how far my appreciation for this rendition goes as we dive right into this.
The real 470 was built in 1924 by the American Locomotive Company for the Maine Central. The engine was used on the Maine Central’s name passenger trains, such as the Gull, and the Bar Harbor Express. 470 was the last steam engine operated by the Maine Central, and was preserved as a display piece for many years in Waterville Maine. Now the engine is undergoing a total rebuild to operating condition by the New England Steam Corporation for eventual use on the Downeast Scenic Railroad of Ellsworth Maine.
The engine is equipped with MTH Proto Sound 3.0, and has both stack and whistle steam effects. The whistle steam effect is the same newly redesigned whistle steam feature the 2021 Berkshires and T-1s featured, where the steam is emitted from the whistle itself, and not a hole in the boiler - a huge improvement, MTH! Very happy to see that these are becoming commonplace in the Premier line steamers.
