I bought The Real Thing on cassette tape when I was about 10-11 years old (when it was released...I'm feeling old😒) and while everyone was crushing on NKOTB etc, my walls were covered with Mike Patton/FNM, G n' R etc posters (especially Slash). I'm an Aussie and loved my MTV. Back when it wasn't full of shit. Whenever MTV had Patton on, I was glued to the TV. I much prefer Layne-era AIC (I'm a hardcore Layneaholic) these days but will always be a FNM fan🤘🏻
32 years ago a just turned 13 yr old saw FNM and said oh I'm going to meet that guy..MP..lol wishful thinking, exactly how, I did not know. And today 13 August is 30 years exactly the first time I met Mike, Jim..the whole band. Two years later again with the Angel Dust tour...then again later in 97 in Australia. From Perth to Melbourne, where I lived for 4 years. And in between in Germany once and back in the States, my home at that time..and part time school in Europe. Chaperoned around for modeling😫 But. Serendipity played her part beautifully for me and I'm so grateful for the memories. Started my career in music a&r, managing, assisting etc bc of FNM. Great stories about so many great bands. From GnR to REM to BJ worked with all and partied and talked nights away. I've been urged to write a book about it all..I'm still deciding. So far no. But maybe someday❣✌🏼😜
oh my god my walls are covered in fnm and gnr too oh my god ahaha, not like the other people my age covering their walls with Harry styles and other modern bullshit haha
That was 91 not 90. I remember bc I was 15 yrs old, had just arrived in Perth visiting Down Under and went to 78 records to pick up my FNM tickets @ The Charles Hotel..no one wanted or could go with bc work or school, it was a Tuesday night. So after procrastinating too effing long..I cabbed it there arriving to a awesome but crazy rough crowd going OFF!!..I wasn't going in to that..so stood back at the top exit and ffs it was halfway through their last song. Suddenly a white van pulls up next to the exit door and the band come walking through. Said hello to me and had a chat..Jim asked if I enjoyed the show, I said yeah!! Totally ALL half of the last song..he was so cool, saying you wanna come along!? I said yes and jump in right next to MP. A random guy jumped in too and we had a great time driving back to the hotel for MP to change and we all went on a drive around a very quiet city. They saw the HWY sign said Innaloo arrows..so we all went to see what Innaloo burb looked like, they were pumped from adrenaline and so funny and just down normal guys. Jim a total gentleman..asked me my age and I lied said 20 but turned 15 in March. Kept in touch with JM for yrs. And caught up a 4th time in Melbourne in 93 as JM had called my mom's number in Perth to contact me and I happen to be in Aissie land again but Melbourne. We spent a few nights out and about and Jim phoned me from their car ph to go out to eat with all..I was late so JM and I went to a steakhouse then met up with the band hanging out the rest of the night. I'm so glad I jumped in that cab that first night 3 yrs earlier..very almost didn't. Lifetime's of great memories and kickstarted my career in music A&R and PA. Love those guys the best of all the future bands I worked with including GnR. Kurt was my all time best.
Great story, I'm a Perth girl so love hearing all about your adventures. :) so wish I could have seen that first live show, but managed to make it to every other time they played Perth. Jim has always been my favourite member. Do you still hear from him?
@@kelly5822 Hey how are you doing there Perth girl!? Thank you for your comment. It's nice to know you appreciated reading mine. I totally love Perth, it was a beautiful city so full of talent, which being so isolated helped and I used to say back when younger "oh I'm going back 'to the edge of the world' again" Lol. Yeah it was a fantastic time that first meeting. And to think 5 minutes..3 min longer and I wouldn't have crossed paths with them..as I almost didn't go!! It absolutely did kick off my desire and ambition to work in the music industry. I had a band but we were..well I was a crap vocalist lol so yeah it was behind the scenes that I truely wanted anyway. I have so many stories of my meets, greets, and work...80% through work. But it was FNM that started that for me. I've been urged to write a book about it all and I still have every filofax diary and receipt lol..literally of all. Packed away in storage in 3 different countries. Jim had also sent me lots of stuff..the FNM band only itinerary for South America, times when to get their butts to the waiting transport, times for promos, down times, suggestions everything an itinerary for the band would have. I remember one advising "guys if you want to go out sightseeing in **.don't go alone or at night or if you do don't wear jewellery, rings in *area as you will lose it WITH your finger still attached" and all sorts of good stuff. I guess the music scene in Perth is still great!? Being isolated does make for some brilliant creativity. Do you know of that suburb of Innaloo? Yeah they just wanted to see it..and it was a very quiet night in that city. The small boutique hotel overlooked water and like a freeway to the right. Are you going to the FNM tour in February 22. Unless postponed. You may have to fly to New Zealand to see them. Anyway I'm glad you enjoyed my little memory of my Perth escapade. In Melbourne we fed apples to possums on the Angel Dust tour. Some of the best memories ever from even all my work..drinks with Slash and Duff and swimming was great fun too. But nothing beats looking into Mike Patton's eyes 😍and Jim is just too special too.✌🏼💫💫
I was only 16 when I lived 5 miles from Brixton and I wished so much I was at that gig, I was grounded I was too young ,😟, I never got to see FNM after this, a lost opportunity 😐
the interviewer comes off as a real uptight, out-of-touch 'gentleman' (i don't want to be rude). the boys had really good social skills even way back then.
Holy Crap, I've never seen this interview and Roddy is wearing a Treponem Pal shirt! I love that band and have been listening to them since the early 90's, that's awesome! Also, they just released a new album, Screamers. Get it, today.
Richard Wilkins is a bit of an off-putting person. I've seen him in person a couple of times. He's 7 foot tall(ish) and he just comes off as a man who only deals with TV world, and not normal people. He gave me a ''what you doing here kid?'' look one time, which was fair enough seeing as I was at my work station when I wasn't supposed to be there (long story). I don't think he's good at mixing with people outside his field, and this is not the only awkward interview I've seen him do. Donnie Sutherland, Suzanne Dowling, and Clinton Walker are probably the best people that have done interviews with musicians in Australia (I'm sure there are others).
I firmly believe the ‘awkward MTV / music channel interview’ (where the band members were clearly, passively trolling the interviewer) was a non-negotiable for a band to maintain credibility between 1987 and 1997. Give or take.
I,ve been see FNM 4 times ,and Mike Patton alone with Fantomas! I remember the first time,at the Monster of Rock 1990 the Poison incident 😂😂😂Mike was a crazy guy!!
