The 1992 MTV Video Music Awards aired live on September 9, 1992, honoring the best music videos from June 16, 1991, to June 15, 1992. The show was hosted by Dana Carvey at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles.
The night's biggest winners were Van Halen and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, as each group earned three moonmen that night. Particularly, Van Halen's video for "Right Now" took home the main award of the night, Video of the Year, and received seven nominations, making it the most nominated video of the night. The Red Hot Chili Peppers, meanwhile, won the award for Viewer's Choice and received a total of nine nominations for two of their videos, becoming the most nominated act of the night. Six of the Peppers' nominations were for "Give It Away", and the remaining three went to "Under the Bridge".
The show was notable for a feud between Axl Rose and members of Nirvana as well as Courtney Love. It began backstage before the awards show, when Love jokingly offered to make Rose the godfather of Frances Bean Cobain. Rose threatened Cobain, telling him to quiet his wife, and barbs were exchanged between Love and Rose's then-girlfriend Stephanie Seymour. Bassists Krist Novoselic and Duff McKagan almost came to blows over the incident, just before Nirvana were to take the stage. The spat went public onstage immediately after Nirvana's performance of "Lithium", as drummer Dave Grohl taunted Rose. Cobain then raised the dispute in post-show interviews at the VMA.
Along with Nirvana and Guns N' Roses, the night's performers included the likes of Bryan Adams, Def Leppard, En Vogue, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, and Eric Clapton, among others. Also, there was a special performance by U2 via satellite, with host Dana Carvey playing the drums for them from the Pauley Pavilion. English band The Cure was slated to perform, but had to cancel their appearance, citing illness and exhaustion.

That's what I have said that is the difference from the 2010's onward. Very specifically the 90's were INCREDIBLY ecclectic, you had from grunge, to R&B, to Hip-hop, to ballads, to alternative and THEY WERE ALL popular. The show was FULL of guests from musicians, to groups, to models, to actors, to athletes, to legends. It feels like MTV really had a wide target range, from say 15 to 35. I don't think it's MTV's fault to change the direction of what they offer...WE changed it, with the internet and the way we consume music.

Music was still at the forefront of culture at the time, and the industry was so bloated with cash in the 90's it was insane. After the early 00's, things began to slow down a lot, and after the early 2010's, it's like everyone ran out of ideas. Like any gold mine, it was inevitable that it become depleted at some point. In hindsight, the timing of Napster was almost perfect.

Brian May talking about Wayne's World, how Freddie Mercury would've loved the amusing side of it and how Freddie would've loved that kids are discovering Queen because of the Wayne's World Bohemian Rhapsody scene warms my heart. Rest easy Freddie. 1946-1991. Timestamp where Brian May shows up is 18:34-19:15 in case you want to see Brian talking Freddie and Wayne's World.

Dude! I was at this awards show when I was seven years old. And I'm just watching this again realizing the crazy level of people I was in the same room as at a young age. I kinda forgot half of them. I've seen Mick Jagger with my own eyes?! I totally forgot.

Weird that Van Halen beat Nirvana and Red Hot Chili Peppers for video of the year. They're a great band but they were long past their peak by 1992. That was an award they would've deserved in like 1984/85.

It's not hip hop's fault. Rappers just filled a void that was left vacant after about 1996. Blame the rock industry for failing to promote the right bands to forge a huge new rock scene after the grunge bands faded/broke up, Metallica went lame, and Guns N Roses effectively broke up. Green Day was promising but didn't put out an adequate follow-up to Dookie for ten years, and No Doubt stopped making rock after Tragic Kingdom. Nu metal finally broke in 1999 but those 3 years of nothing but post-grunge nonsense and Load/Reload made rock really lose a lot of ground, and it was too little too late.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure this was the last year when Viewers Choice/Video of the Year was 100% rock music. I think rock was still bigger than any other style through about 1996 but I think after 1992 it was clear that it was beginning to cede ground to other styles of music. Really from the 50's through 1992 (except briefly during the disco era) rock was the undisputed king.
