In this video I answer one of the commonly asked questions about Muay Thai:
'Can you use for Muay Thai for Self-Defense?'
Yes...?
Using security camera footage from our old location, I breakdown confrontations that I've had in the last couple of years and how I used Muay Thai techniques and strategies to defend myself.

De-escalation is probably the highest value self defense technique/set of techniques a person can learn. Most regular people don't want to fight and even when they are extremely angry. If we choose our words carefully we can often de-escalate the situation without physical violence. The people who actually want to fight are usually pretty easy to spot, they often don't speak much and words usually won't work well with them. The people screaming and whatnot usually are like a small dog barking. Some basic techniques I've learned for basic de-escalation are: 1) avoid the use of the word "you". some people will get defensive just by using "you" 2) avoid direct use of the word "no" 3) in general use a more "yes and" vs "no but" type approach. even if they say some absurd/crazy/aggressive stuff you could say something like "ah, okay, right on. lets step out here" or whatever. 4) if it looks like a fight is actually going to happen or they are more than just verbally agro, use open hands and try to keep the palms visible to them until the aggression actually starts. if there are cameras without audio that alone could save someone from a criminal charge should a fight actually break out.

Expertly and humanely handled. There are so many people out there who seem to be waiting for an excuse or opportunity to use violence or a weapon in "self defence". Totally agree about the power of body language. I worked in mental hospitals - remaining calm and not reacting to agression (which is often a cover for fear) with more aggression gets you out of 99% of situations.

Thank you for watching and appreciate the kind words. Agreed that many people want an excuse to 'show them what they got' and some of the reactions to this video seem disappointed that there wasn't any of that. I've learned that reactive behavior usually leads to consequences... better to let things blow over versus getting ego involved.

Sensei Vik! Man, it's crazy to me because in Texas public intoxication is against the law, and so is trespassing. You are blessed that these people did not have weapons nor were really violent. Kind of a scary location. Glad you were safe and moved!
@thaiboxinginstitute
@thaiboxinginstitute 8 месяцев назад
Yes very fortunate that situations didn't escalate. I do believe all those things are illegal here in CA (especially trespassing on private property) but we are sort of left to fend for ourself. The video demonstrate a sliver of a bigger issue and I really feel for those (both employees and business owners) who have been in these situations and ended up being victimized.

7:20 It’s actually the “fight, flight, freeze or fawn” response. Women are really good at fawning.. it’s the best “stay alive” strategy we can use with a hostile man. Not because a woman isn’t aggressively reacting, yelling for help or fighting back does it mean she’s not in a dangerous situation.

Of course everyone in the reel comments have been calling me out for not doing hurting them and that lizard part of my brain that directed much of my life agrees with them but the rational, logical part of my brain sees no reason with assaulting people. Besides, even if those videos did exist, it would be soooo dumb for me to post them, lol.

To chip in on the legal definition of self defence- 1. Force used to defend self must be reasonable and proportionate to the threat 2. What is considered "reasonable and proportionate" is assessed based on what a hypothetical reasonable person in the same situation would do, not based on what you personally think is reasonable and proportionate. But it allows for nuance if you're in 'fake' danger which looks real at the time, like the guy pretending to assault you for a 'prank', if you treated it as a serious threat and ended up whupping his ass. 3. Most importantly - self defence is a legal defence to assault/GBH/manslaughter etc. In order to plead self defence, you are saying "yes, I admit that I hurt someone with violence which is a crime to do in normal circumstances, but I should not be punished for it because I was defending myself and it was reasonable for me to do so and I used reasonable force". It means that if you are unsuccessful in claiming that what you did was self defence, you have by default pled guilty to assault/whatever and will have to face the consequences for that. 4. Pre-emptive self defence is a thing and you're not expected to wait for the other guy to hit you first if it's obvious they're going to attack you - but obviously, it's often a harder thing to justify if it's not unambiguously clear (e.g. you having it all on video the guy dojo storming you and coming at you even after you've backed up and asked him if he's sure he wants to do this) 5. The court usually takes it into account if you have combat training or experience, so if you hurt someone more than you you need to you're more likely than the average untrained guy to get into trouble for it, and more likely to be penalised more harshly because they expect you to know better and have better self control.

Great job Coach Vic. I am a retired police sergeant from a municipal agency in Palm Beach County Florida. I was a defensive tactics instructor, expandable baton instructor, Taser instructor, firearms instructor, and chemical, weapons instructor I’ve trained martial arts since 1983:2 styles of kung fu, 2 styles of tae kwon do, Krav Maga,, Muay Thai, and Haganah. Your instruction regarding how to manage those situations was spot on. Also, your perspective regarding how to perform during violent encounters is also spot on. A skilled operator just goes to work to achieve the objective. There’s no place for emotions and taking the attackers actions as a personal affront. Train professionals try to remain emotionally, detached, and focus on achieving the desired outcome. I learned that in law-enforcement and reinforced it through Krav Maga. Thank you for the way you gave your advice regarding Krav Maga. Krav Maga offers a great deal of value in perspective of violent encounters, and things to keep in mind before, and after a violent encounter. Krav Maga works best as an addition to those who have a great deal of training and experience already in more traditional martial arts. Sense much of the focus of Krav Maga is responding to an attack with detailed combatives, many students can get so focused on the details that they believe the effectiveness is found in specific execution of those details instead of being a strong effective fighter. Nevertheless, good advice and keep doing what you’re doing in your service to the community, good instructors, and good schools are difficult to find.

I was at home one day, searching the internet for a Muay Thai boxing class in my area inland empire California. Yours had to be, as far as appearence, the most authentic looking Muay Thai academy. But your classes are too far, being in Los Angeles. I live in Beaumont California. Plus I am a over-the-road truck driver. So I don't even know if I can actually sign up for classes anyway. But I do want to get in shape and learn how to fight in the process 💯

@thaiboxinginstitute

@@brotherlogicrmf2199 hmm- it sounds like you want to buy a package of drop ins. pricing depends on area and cost of living. average price to try a class out is $20 but some places will do a free trial. I would guess in your area drops in will prob cost around that much whereas the average rate for any fitness class in my area (west LA) is 40-50 dollars.
