Before you type that comment 🤣 there are a number of rules in Muaythai and yes I have not mentioned all of them. However this is how I could have explained it in the most simple way that came to my mind.
I also have a number of other explanations in the video playlist so check them out if you’d like to learn.
Being in the sport for 12 years I have learned so much! But I still feel like a complete beginner.
So here we have it Muaythai scoring for beginners 🇹🇭
Very different to any other sport, Thai Boxing is scored traditionally over 5 rounds and judged on a fight as a whole.
Judges look for who maintains strength and finishes strong, showing less damage and less fatigue.
It’s also an art based on clean effective striking with the fighter who can pick his shots carefully and precisely being favoured. Unless showing damage himself.
Boxing, MMA and Kickboxing is scored round by round. Muaythai is scored on a whole.
The feeling out process seems weird but once you know the process behind it, it makes sense.
On a fight where you are judged based on how much you can exploit your opponent and also finish strong, you aren’t in a rush to use energy nor expose weaknesses early on. Hence why a lot of Nak Muay fighters start slow to see what their opponent offers. This round is normally a 10-10 draw on the scorecards as less important.
As the fight progresses, round 2 isn’t a big one, however can be won. This is when it picks up slightly. 10-10 or 10-9
Round 3 you want to win but not kill your gas tank as you still have 2 more rounds unless damage on your opponent has been visible then you may be trying to secure a KO or TKO victory.
Round 4 is really interesting. This is referred to by many as “the money round”. This is when most gambling in Thailand stadiums has either taken place or people placing bets have secured their money by picking the right fighter. This is a crucial round to win!
Round 5 is to finish strong, showing no signs of weakness and fatigue. If you have lost previous rounds, this is your last chance.
Many fighters by this point know if they have won or lost. So it’s normally one fighting and one coasting to victory.
There is such thing in Thailand called “hanging the glove” which has happened to myself in a fight. It’s almost as if, when you accept you are defeated, you make an obvious hand gesture to your opponent, touch gloves, and circle around the ring until the fight is finished.
Many fighters want to be uninjured as they are fighting so regularly, so if you are fighting a losing battle in round 5, some just happily take the points loss on the back rather than take further damage.
This can be frown upon, especially when there is money involved.
However a close fight in round 5 can also mean carnage as both fighters most likely want to do everything they can to win money, or a championship title.
The sport and martial art is beautiful along with the culture around it. I’d recommend it to anyone as it’s changed my life for the good.
If you like what you see or you’d like to see more MMA, Muaythai, Kickboxing or Boxing content that’s exciting and filtered out for the good stuff, please drop me a sub 👏❤️
