Here I tackled the heavily soiled engine bay of a 15 year old 16v Mitsubishi Colt which I suspect hadn’t seen so much as an oily rag for years!

One tip you left out- all of this should be performed in someone else' driveway to prevent all the grease and grime from staining up your own drive way. :)

Always just in case, when covering electricals with bags you should check the tightness of all caps. Like oil, power steering, coolant, and especially the brake fluid cap. If water got in there bad things would happen

@dewrus2153
@dewrus2153 6 лет назад
+Billy-I generally agree as I've done so for years with no issues...and I keep vehicles a very long time. One thing to note, however, is to check if your alternator has a one-way clutch (overrun pulley). Some cars have this and it doesn't like water and cleaners very much. The alternator itself is usually just fine but the pulley can be problematic over time primarily not so much by the water but the intrusion of cleaning chemicals into the clutch that can cause it to fail. If you car doesn't have one, then you're fine. If it does, I would just be careful not to saturate the pulley with cleaner and go easy on water.

Whilst freshly cleaned- a few sponge brush dabs of hi-temp silver on valve cover and exhaust would do wonders, keep the rust down. Pump-up sprayers are easier on your hands, spray 360', hold more product. I like how you shined all the plastic & rubber bits; oxygen is very corrosive, but it's big Brother Ozone is even more damaging to plastics and rubbers (hydrocarbons). After a degreasing- they will quickly craze white. Belt dressing is also a must to make tacky and repel water.

When cleaning your engine, ALWAYS keep the car running! If you have to use brushes to scrub anything in the engine compartment, the product you're using is not very good. You don't need compressed air to dry the engine. The water from a power washer can sit in any area when rinsing. You don't need to cover any of the components with bags or avoid areas. None of this will harm the engine. The best products I have ever used for the engine is from the company Jax Wax. Buy the Orange Citrus and Shine All.
@98Blackbess
@98Blackbess 6 лет назад
I tend to have the engine running when using my power washer for 2 reasons. 1. If the engine is hot, the water turns to steam and then removes the grime easier. 2. The engine dries quicker for the final detailing but also cools down fast enough for the detailing to take place. I've been using this method for years and have never had a problem. In fact it gets the job done quicker but with the same amazing results. I know we all have our own ways of doing things so its just constructive criticism to hopefully help, that's all.
@vistron888
@vistron888 8 лет назад
Had a situation on a petrol engine where water ended up in the deep spark plug socket wells and it wouldn't start. Diesels are more forgiving but with newer and newer cars you get ever more electronic gadgetry so you have to be a bit careful. Back in the day engine cleaning services were done as steam cleaning. I remember the car auctions offering this service to fleets entering their vehicles and yet down the side of the auction houses they were just blasting them with cold water pressure washers.

Interesting facts. I did an MOT history check on this car and at the time of this video it had done over 104,000 miles! It passed MOT's in 2013 and 2015, although didn't have one in 2014 (meaning the MOT expired a month after this video). Sad news. Since the MOT in 2015, where the only advisories were the two front tires, a lot had gone wrong on the car. Upon it's MOT in 2016, the car failed on the following: Exhaust has a major leak of exhaust gases (7.1.2) Exhaust emissions Lambda reading after 2nd fast idle outside specified limits (7.3.D.3) Offside Registration plate lamp not illuminating the registration plate (1.1.C.1e) Offside Stop lamp not working (1.2.1b) Nearside Headlamp aim too low (1.8) Offside Headlamp aim too low (1.8) Nearside Front Tyre tread depth below requirements of 1.6mm (4.1.E.1) Offside Rear Tyre tread depth below requirements of 1.6mm (4.1.E.1) Front Tyre(s) incorrect because different size tyres are fitted on the same axle. (4.1.A.1a) Offside Rear Inner Suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded wheel arch (2.4.A.3) Offside Rear Outer Suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded sill (2.4.A.3) Nearside Rear Outer Suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded sill (2.4.A.3) Nearside Rear Suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded chassis (2.4.A.3) Offside Rear Suspension component mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded chassis (2.4.A.3) There have been no MOT's since so I assume the car was scrapped. Sad ending :(
@CarCleaningGuru
@CarCleaningGuru 6 лет назад
Yes it was scrapped a by the owner who had it after my sister. To be honest most of that list is minor and with some welding, a new exhaust and some part worn front tires the car could quite easily have gone on to see another day. Guess it just wasn’t worth it!

Car Cleaning Guru OMG CCG replied! 😂 what made my comment on a 4 year old video stand out? 😂 oh and I did this clean a lil while ago on my Peugeot 307, came out a treat!

I agree with the car cleaning guru, all minor stuff and this car would have lasted another 10 years. Mechanically this series was fairly indestructible.

Respect that Mitsubishi's they are great cars and ultra reliable. The cleaning job is very well done 👍 I would only suggest leave it without dressing as dressing collect dust and also make car feels cheap clean rather than professional. Another great video.

the dressing is water based. nothing sticks to it.

Good job, mate (as usual), and thanks for working on old cars. Not everyone can afford a new car, although you'd think they could if you believed the bullshitting commenters. Cheers from Australia!

Nice video! just remember not to use silicone based dressing under the engine compartment, silicone will migrate and destroy oxygen sensors !

While I appreciate the before and after, unless you are planning to do a car show, there really isn't much functional point in having a shiny engine bay. Keeping the general muck and grime of daily use down is good though, so you know when various components are needing replacing etc. Great video in any case, lots of useful points and explanations as to why you use each product at each stage.

I'd not expect that bucket of bolts to have such a clean engine bay; I'd be very suspicious if I was looking to buy it.

MKRM27 it's a shame that people actually think like that.

MKRM27 depends on how the rest of the car looks. If the rest of the car is as well taken care of you'd be a fool to asume someone that let's there car be neglected is somehow less suspicious.

@@Gnik4144 You're the idiot I buy a junker with a leaking headgasket, clean the bay real quick and sell it to because you thought an old POS with a clean engine bay to hide leaks was a good thing 🙄

I never use any kind of "dressing" under the hood. Looks great (for about a week). Dressing makes surfaces dust & grime magnets, a good washing & degreasing twice a year looks good & lasts much longer.

I know what you’re saying but a water based dressing buffed over afterwards shouldn’t attract much dust or grime.

Great video! I would add, take the rusty screw out of the oil fill cap, and stick it into some cardboard. Give it a couple of coats of Rust Olium wheel paint and a clear coat. This will go along with the highlight gloss dressing 😉

Pressure washing an engine bay is risky, best to rinse with a garden hose. Great work!

Now pull the valve cover media blast and paint it. Pull the header and do the same with a good high temp ceramic paint while you are at it and the engine will look brand new.
