I have had a set of Maxxis RAZR MT's since 2019 on my Triton and overall have been thoroughly impressed. I run what most would consider a "skinny" tyre being a 235/85r16. Offroad, combined with twin lockers, there isn't that much that I cannot get through. On-road, yes they're noticeable (the MQ Triton isn't the most well (sound) insulated vehicle), however conversation is easy without any raised voices! Something I have noticed though is that they are very strong, and this also means heavy, with near bullet proof sidewalls that can support a lot more weight compared to AT's. If you are used to All Terrain tyres, discard all the usual pressures and work out a new set of numbers for different conditions. Go too high with pressures and on the black top the ride will be awful and scary (particularly in the wet). Get the pressures right for the weight of your vehicle and these transform into a pretty damn good black top tyre too, being very predictable in cornering and braking, and handle standing water very well without any hint of aquaplaning (a somewhat terrifying characteristic of the previous BFG "no terrains" the RAZR MT's replaced). They're definitely a tyre worth considering, but if you want the same (tyre carcase) toughness without needing an MT, the RAZR AT is my second choice.
Hi Nathan. I used to run all terrain BFG's primarily as the original BFG mud terrain was literally a tractor tyre, so noisy also, just as mudfies were many many years ago. Then they produced the KM2 muddie which were in such demand I couldn't source a set prior to my first Cape York trip, so went with Maxxis muddies, my very first mud tyre. Noisy was an understatement, drove us mental travelling to the cape & home, then eventually cut through a sidewall some time thereafter, so I then replaced them with the BFG muddies I'd originally wanted. This has no reflection on your choice, that was many years ago and the razors are a much better tyre than the maxxis range offered back then. I'm not going to bore anyone with comparison other than to say KM2 aren't noisy new, had far better on road grip than maxxis muddies & BFG all terrains did, especially on wet rd towing, (all terrains scared me a few times on wet bitumen) the KM2's just impressed BUT from 10K on they became noisier the more they wore. Wear wasn't what I'd call bad considering the design for a muddy. Run on many sets over the years after that initial set. Then I began with the KM3 as soon as it was released, as it had far better sidewall grip, deeper and better tread design again. Nissan dealer measured the tread depth at 19mm when taken in for service, yes heaps of tread BUT as you experienced with the maxxis, steering response poor, but that doesn't last long, niether does the deep tread, yes they wear quicker than KM2 did, but are softer and better again on & off road, but once 30K ticks round they are noisy also. Darn quiet new though. I've gone thru many sets of BFG muddies, never one puncture, cut to pieces on sharp rocks, not a single puncture. For this reason I elect BFG Muddies at every renewal, even forgoing the local dealers efforts to sway me into their brands, no, just order in the BFG's is my response. We tour extensively on these muddies, love em. Oh, just every now & again I take the aftermarket rims the mudfies are mounted on off the vehicle and replace them with my standard rims & factory tyres, they'd have less than 10K on them total. I only do this if I'm going to do a 100% on road trip. The fuel savings are impressive & road noise almost zero, so yes, we do pay a price to run muddies but the assurance of off road grip, no punctures whilst touring outway the savings in my humble opinion. Oh, BFG's do throw rocks up, underguards emphasise that to us, that's just some of our experience being shared with your viewers.
Re' Maxxis Razr M/T. Mine is predominantly used for towing a 19' offroad van. Why did I choose the Razr M/T? #1 The Maxxis Razr M/T & A/T are the most robust available for my application in the sizing I run. #2 On occasion, I need to get through slippery/ muddy conditions with a fully laden vehicle and van in tow. Now having said that, we agree that the vast majority of our driving does NOT require the extra traction of an M/T. However, anyone who has had a van offroad where you need to negotiate muddy / slippery conditions ie heavy rain overnight and you need to get out of where you were camped etc... it's in these conditions that the M/T comes into it's own and you will forgive a little extra noise, less tread wear or on road performance when it's the extra traction that becomes your #1 priority dragging a boat anchor out of a tricky situation that may otherwise have you & your family stranded or risk vehicle / van damage in the attempt. In soft sand the Razr M/T is fantastic when aired down correctly. Wet on road performance is also quite impressive as mentioned - more impressive in fact than many A/T's we have used. On road towing the van they behave very well with my combination. We know from experience that sharp iron stone riddled tracks such as the Gascoyne, Pilbara, Kimberly and by the looks Savanah Way are NOT the Maxxis Razr M/T's best friend (As also explained to Harry @ F2F). If you intend on doing a lot of touring in these area's the Toyo R/T or M55f (albeit quite noisy on road) may be a better alternative IF you can get hold of a set!! You appear to be running a bit more weight than we are which may be contributing to the accelerated tyre wear. ie Mine had worn barely 1mm in 10K slightly more so on the rear.. However my vehicle is not full time 4WD nor does it have a thumping great bi turbo V8 eg: I am not getting nearly as much front wheel slip under hard acceleration😁😄 Having also travelled from Cairnes, up through the Daintree as far as Cooktown then back down to Mackay via the table lands via Atherton, Ravenshoe, Japoon etc & we know how steep and tight some of the roads/ corners are in QLD vs WA and how this significantly impacts tyre wear particularly towing. I’m running the Maxxis Razr AT811 on my 2018 VX 200 and I have to say they are a fantastic tyre! I’m absolutely stoked for them. Iv ran Nito Trail grapples, KO2, Toyos, Mickey Thompsons, falken wildpeak and more. And these tyres are on par or even better then most tyres and are great value for money.
Really well put together review mate. I was leaning towards these as my next tyres for the Prado, currently running Pirelli Scorpion ATR which i highly rate and are up there with the best all rounder. I've love another set but dedicating the vehicle to a local weekend track warrior i think the Maxxis would be the best fir for that application. Cheers, enjoy the trip.

I have 285x70x17s Falken Wild Peak AT3s towing 3.5 ton full offroad Lotus van with 350kg tow ball weight and have done 98k on them with 8-9mm of tread left out of the original 14mm. We have been towing for 4.5 years and have concluded that mud tyres are not suited for touring and as you have experienced they wear out quickly. We get off the black top regularly and have never wished I had mud tyres. 45 psi rear and 40 psi front with tyre rotation every 10k.
I'm going back to A/T's for my next set of tyres. The inconvenience of pulling out traction devices a little more often well accounts for the constant noise, wear and cost (both fuel and tyre costs) of my current M/T's. Mind, I'm not canning M/T's generally, just for my use.
Hi, Good review I have the 33x12.50R15LTs & as far as I can tell the LT are the same in pattern as the MTs. I did not want the LTs but I think the seller just thought I would not notice or be bothered, I noticed too late. I am guessing the MTs will be more pliable. But I have to say, on a Sunraisia standard steel rim, they were pretty conforming in mud & rough terrain. I was warned by a few that they would be too stiff but I have not found that a problem @ all. I am running them on a modified 1981 Hilux flat bed ute, so the vehicle is relatively light compared to your Landcruiser. The traction is awesome In my case my side wall is much taller than yours. I am @ about 15,000kms on a set of 5 & even @ 3000km interval rotation they can be noisy for the 1st 400kms on bitumen. So I am wondering how your 1st rotation @ 10,000 will fair, whether they will be noisy beyond the 1st 400 or not.
Great review. I hope once you have to replace them, you would use a different make Like Mickey Thompsons for a good comparison between different options.
Thanks Nath. I guess with a specialist tyre there will always be areas they excel in and some not so great. Like you said it depends on whether you are concerned about economy, noise or a particular part of the tyres performance i.e. mud, sand sharp rocks etc. One story I can tell you is that before I bought tyres for my car 2 independent dealers who sell multiple brands sang the praises of Toyo. Then strangely enough while I was having mine fitted a guy walked into the tyre place and completely unsolicited said to the proprietor can you put the same ones on my car these have given me great mileage and performance. They were Toyo Open Country A/T2's. But I'm sure there'll be plenty out there that bag these as well. On another subject Nathan, when are you going to get into the merch? hats, stubbie holders etc. Could be a nice little earner for you.🤣🤣 Cheers, Peter
Thanks Peter, you're absolutely right. The mud terrain has it purpose, it probably should be used in mud 😆 Maybe not the best for touring the top end 🤦♂️ So my first preference was Toyo's, I was looking in particular at the RT's, however there wasn't a set available in Australia. I had heard this had been the case for some time, so I took the chance to test out something new. I think I'll be looking for something difference next set, just to compare and try other brands/styles. In regards to the merch... yeah I've thought about it. Probably something I'll look into after this trip, bit easier to organise from an address 👍 I've done some quotes, wouldn't be much of a money maker, but that's alright, can still get the channel exposure and hopefully some cool designs out there.
@@XploringOz Yes the RT's look good. Not available when I got mine otherwise I probably would have gone for them. Look like a nice balance between the AT's and MT's. Only really a bit of fun about the merch. really but they all seem to do it now. Main thing is you and your family enjoy yourselves and don't let this youtube stuff become a chore. I’ve used most brands of tyres over the last 30 years and have settled on these tyres as a go to, up to my sixth set on my work & personal vehicles. Was keen to have a go on the ATs but my tyre guy suggested while they have the same strong carcass as the MTs they haven’t quite got the compound right.
Interesting... I'm getting close to getting a 30,000km review of this set published. I think I'll experiment with some other brands before settling, but its good to hear you've had good experiences with them this far 👍

I’m confused - why would you increase tyre pressure in the front when hitching up? My understanding is that the tow ball download will reduce load on the front axle, therefor, if anything, I would have thought you would decrease the pressure? Wondering what your thoughts are for doing this.
Good objective review as always Nathan. Have you ever had animals strike or needed to use your winch on your big lap so far? Trying to prep for a lap and wondering if there items are overkill or not.
Hey mate, so yes we have had/done both. We have had 3 animal strikes. One into the side panels (so bull bar was useless) and 2 into the bar. Only one of which may have caused damage, however with the bar work it was good. Winch wise, again yes. We have used this a few times. Couple of times was because of the tracks we decided to take, but one time it was required just to get out of a Victorian High Country camp after rain. Without it we would have been stuck until it dried out 👍 Personally given that we are usually by ourselves, I wouldn't go without one. The next trip episode has some winch use!
Something different. Wanted to test it out and thought the Cape York trip would be a good chance to do that. Testing the AT in the same brand is definitely on the cards 👍
Hi Nathan, like most things on 4wd can be a compromise. My experience with muddies they do use more fuel, wear a fair bit quicker, and become noisy with age.. but get in muddy situation they are excellent. Personally I probably wouldn't tour predominantly on bitumen using muddies

Nice one. Think for towing this size is excellent. It’s a sweet spot on size and fuel economy. Your review will be unlike others as you will be harder on the tyres than many others. I predict 45,000kms based off 3 others I know on the same. I think the bagging out is the size not the tyre. Another great review
Thanks mate 👍 For sure, the size is definitely suiting the 'touring' lifestyle well. The improvement in fuel consumption is handy after all the trips' costs so far 😬 I agree with the bagging out though, doesn't help I'm running 18" rims, which I wish I could down size, but hey, all a compromise in the end. Still yet to get stuck with these though, so I think I'm making up for the loss in size with the addition traction. I'll need something new before the High Country though 🤔
Thanks Nathan, for me the construction for reliable use remote touring is why we consider MT tyres also. I guess that’s where RT style tyres fill that gap well. Like you I’m considering the Toyo RT next but these are a dark horse. Remind me again, what was the AT you come off of?
I am on my second set of Toyo Open country RT'S and they have been great,dealt with the harsh Pilbra roads and the Kimberleys with pretty good tread wear you just need to rotate every 10k as the 200 series is very hard on the front tyres
For sure mate. To be honest the Toyo RT was my first pick, but there wasn't a single set in Aus at the time I needed them. Something I'll be looking at in the future. I came from 6 sets of BFG KO2 AT's and 1 set of BFG KM3 MT. 👍
On my third set of these and on the road in the wet they are absolutely terrible for traction, feels like I’m on ice skates doing 25km/h around a wet round about 🤣

Only because the Sahara and VX models of the 200 series Cruisers can't fit a 17" on their larger front brake calibers, otherwise I would have definitely gone smaller 👍
