On 22 November 1981, in the middle of their mammoth American tour, the Rolling Stones arrived in Chicago prior to playing 3 nights at the Rosemont Horizon. store.eagle-rock.com/muddywaters
Long influenced by the Chicago blues, the band paid a visit to Buddy Guy's club the Checkerboard Lounge to see the legendary bluesman perform. It didn't take long before Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood and Ian Stewart were joining in on stage and later Buddy Guy and Lefty Dizz also played their part. It was a unique occasion that was fortunately captured on camera.
Now, restored from the original footage and with sound mixed and mastered by Bob Clearmountain, this amazing blues night is being made available in an official release for the first time.

That would be Mr Willie "Big Eyes" Smith. He was a boss on the harmonica. He'd been blowing the harp for Muddy Waters since the early 60s at that point. He really shines on Muddy's 'Get Hard' album.

Ann TwoShoes Definitely special! His spirit is in that room and quite a few others, I suspect. I hope he was there in person. I was lucky enough to meet Buddy Guy in Melbourne. He is such a lovely person and a dynamite performer. One of the greatest blues guitarists still in my opinion.

Back in the early 80s living in Everett Washington I was walking by the Anchor Tavern and heard music this is a working mans bar mostly longshoremen looked inside and there sat BB King . For the next hour and a half I was sitting and listening to the best concert I've ever been to. Something I will never forget.

I love when Keith climbs over the table, then grabs & leans on the woman serving drinks, almost like she's furniture, then kisses her confirm it was really a hug; she smiles & puts her arm around him, to say, "I know, got the joke; you're family here." Beautiful moment. One of the sweetest interactions you'll ever see on the internet. Muddy Waters beaming with joy like a proud father at Jagger & Richards, exact same dynamic. (I was at the Checkerboard a few times & remember her: so *heimish*.)

I think I've read everything about Keith Richards...women love him. He seems kind and authentic. Jagger's reviews from women are terrible. I read one Stone's woman's book, (sorry, they blend together). She said her mother threw a joint in the pool when Keith handed it off. So he rolled 2 more. "This one is for me to smoke, and that one is for your mum to throw in the pool..."

Probably one of the most legendary moments ever recorded in music history. The inspiration for the name of the Rolling Stones came from the song Rollin Stone by Muddy. Crazy to be able to see this and the audio is amazing quality too.

I'm impressed by the quality of the recorded sound (even in stereo) and the image. The Stones' arrival was planned. Table right up front reserved for them; camera crew hired (there are at least 2 cameras going simultaneously); sound recording crew hired. Whoever thought of setting this up, good on them, so we can all enjoy it decades later.

I think he brought is own guitar, and so did Ron. Otherwise, Muddy's guitarist would've just handed his off to Keith. The Stones security had to have called the club ahead of time, to arrange for them to get some VIP treatment and seating. It's easy to imagine someone from the Stones camp telling Muddy they'd be there, and him saying have them bring their guitars, if they want to come up and jam. Both guitars were tuned and ready to go. How did they know they wouldn't have to check the tuning ahead of time? A prepared guitar tech?

It takes Mick a while to get up to Muddy, but when Keith and Ronny are called they scamper across the tables, and in a few moments they had their own guitars in hand. The dead giveaway, is the guitar straps are the perfect length for each. As for playing with Muddy's Band, they were set for standard tuning with their guitars, and most of the music would have been in standard tuning. Perhaps Muddy's guitar player might play slide guitar, and he probably would be in an Open G Tuning, or a tuning that is tuned to a chord. Dailyflash, you nailed all the arrangements getting everyone into their seats. The big question is where is the video of the other songs they played. You know they were doing 2 or 3 songs with a couple guys shooting film, went to the trouble of getting Keith and Ronny's guitars on pitch. I didn't see Charlie, but he doesn't like getting out, but Bobby Keys was there, and could have provided saxophone. There must be more film and a couple of other songs.

In fact it is nothing. Hes playing the simplest pentatonic scale...like any brginner can do after kess than a year practice. The only thing that can make the difference is the " feel". But the " teddy boy attitude" he has to me, doesnt compensate the fact hes a poor player. I mean..you playing wit guys who invented and move the blues. If you cany add anything special, just leave it to them

Hi you can get the whole concert on DVD came out a few years ago, muddy waters live at the checkerboard lounge!! I was at Eel Pie Island in '71 at the bar,..when I saw Mick chugging a beer, talking to Rod Stuart. Keith picked up an acoustic guitar and there followed 20 minutes of loose jamming ending up with the best version of Maggie May I ever heard. Sacred days.! Good times!

Remember that before the Stones and Eric C guys like Muddy were unheard of and never made money. They made sure that the record companies paid them royalties . That’s why you see a guy like Muddy reacting like this when the stones walked in!!

Look at any Stones album and you'll notice that the original artist is always credited. The Stones always acknowledged their debt to blues music and the original artists. I've no idea if they still do it but the Stones used to perform in small clubs like this under various pseudonyms like "Little Boy Blue and the Blue Boys"; I think they played old blues songs.

What a treat to see the Stones just trying to listen, and as any classy and legendary talent "the few we had" he had to bring the young talent upfront. Everyone went home happier from the beautiful experience with a big smile on their face. Music is such a transcendent exercise of free flowing our emotions and ideas. As the story goes, back in the 60s when the Stones were just starting out, their first stop after landing in Chicago was Chess Records. Muddy Waters recording studio. They came in hopes of meeting Muddy in person. After walking up the stairs they saw a man on a ladder painting the ceiling in the hallway. Keith said “Excuse me sir, would you tell us if Muddy Waters is here?” The man put down his paint brush, got down off the ladder, wiped off his hands and extended his hand to Keith. “I’m Muddy Waters” he said. Just know, Bill Clinton fucked up the music business. He passed a law where before it used to be maybe 50 different companies that controlled pretty much everything entertainment and other things, and now it's about 5 or 6 componies, like Disney, Viacom, all those big ones. They now control everything we hear, see and read in America. So before we had much more variety, more risk, more thought into what we all thought the world was. Now society has been mushed into one view, with one idea. And this idea is that music must be consumable just like junk food. That's why everything is tge same. It's much harder to find the music that once challenged and was proud of being a part of something, and it's been damn near impossible for musicians to live that way too. So fuck bill clinton, fuck Napster, and fuck the junk food they force us too make.

I come back to this song because everything about the performance is so great. The sound is ENORMOUS, everyone is extremely talented (shoutout harmonica fella), I really love how Muddy pressures Mick on stage (Mick's initial reaction is hilarious), Keith's tasty as fuck solo-it's all great. You even love (at least I do) seeing all those servers serving. Feels and looks so authentic

Nope, Stones and Muddy met a couple of times, Muddy was close to the end, the Stones were not in their 'high" zone... Nothing special... Nothing special but a cool moment to witness, although it must have been better to live it at that moment and that place...

That's so cool! I used to play blues harp down at my local with some seriously good blues musicians at the monthly Blues Jam. I felt out of my depth compared to them. They appreciated me, I loved it. Best days of my life to be honest!

I just thought that 1. Keith was a bit of an a**hole for not acknowledging or barely even thanking him. He just ignores him. 2. He played better than Keith.

@@nielsje30 You've never played in a band otherwise you'd understand the culture. Musicians don't give props during a performance. Just not the way things are done. The exception I've seen is in some jazz ensembles where all the musicians will stand up and point to the drummer during a solo. Look at the Moranbong Band doing "Let the Snow Fall On New Years Day", The first violin and the cello give the big point to the drummer while she rips off a good one. As far as Keith being "not as good", that's another silly remark that shows your ignorance. Musicians judge other musicians on their body of work. On their lifetime contribution to the art. Keef has been doing it for over 50 years. I don't think anyone has been more influential than Keith Richards. Writing. Tuning. Improvisational stuff. Pushing the envelope. If you think the other guy was "better" then you're a tofu-eating woke Democrat.

Every body at Chess records inspired all the bands from England, when Muddy was in his hey day, we here in the states didn't hear his music, but in England they got air time and respect they couldn't get at home.

Most people know this, but for those who don't know, the Stones went to Chess Records on their early American tours. First or second, you pick, I can't get to my record collection right now, but the Stones were being recorded with blues greats at Chess. That record album is raw blues. Later, when the blues artists from the US were touring in England, they made a second album featuring the Stones again with blues artists from London. I have both albums.

That's because tone is all in the hands. The way you hold your chords, the way you pluck the strings, etc. Sure you can do many things with effects and knobs, but at the end of the day you can have the exact same equipment dialed in the exact same way and you won't be able to sound the same as Keith.

The devil is going to have a good old time when Keith finally has to relinquish his soul. Because obviously he made a few more deals with old Beelzebub to prolong his life. Eric Clapton found a way to get out of his deal with the Devil by selling his soul to Adult contemporary music and not playing the blues as much.

The story was that when the Beatles first toured in the US they were asked what they wanted to see. Muddy Waters they replied. Where is that asked the interviewer. When the Stones pulled up outside Chess for the first to record they were unloading their equipment A voice asked if they wanted a hand. It was Muddy Waters. Jagger and Brian Jones were awestruck and couldn’t believe one of their heroes was there.
