Great idea! I’m still on the hunt, though because we have two fluffy Great Pyrenees that will cover our inside with the shavings.

I just did this to cover a trail in backyard that dogs made, now I have pine shavings all over house. Back to the drawing board 🤦

Yeah that’s what I mentioned in the video. But once they get wet they lay down nice and cover the mud. But it’s not a permanent solution.

Cedar chips! Or straw bale

Awesome I’ve been thinking about the shavings vs pea gravel as well. I started with pea gravel rubber mulch mix that works well for one “running zone” although places that are mud now that I might reseed it’s a good fix and probably even beneficial when reseeding. But I like the larger pea gravel because it seems to not disappear into the soil as fast from 2 large dogs continually running on it. Going to the Tractor Supply store right now for my muddy mess. Thank you

Does the gravel seem to hurt your dog's paws? Are you able to poop scoop okay with it?
@Goo475
@Goo475 5 месяцев назад
@@joey8701 Yes, driveway type gravel hurts their feet. I use the 1"ish size of the rounded river rock pebbles. I origionally bought bags of rubber mulch, then added the rounded pebbles to hopefully make a base in the dirt. The rubber mulch is interfering with the pebble base settling but it's doing an awsome job staying on top of the dirt being it's squishy recycled rubber. It's about 2-3 " deep which has been plenty to allow heavy rains/snow pass through keeping the top dry and dirt free. I also added several bales of large bedding shavings to another area that was all mud. It's working great. I had a lot of wind rearrange it over some grassy areas, tho I think it will provided excellent protection for overseeding as well. Even with the dogs thrashing around the once grassy areas, I can see baby grass popping through. It's a win win. Looks like a big hamster cage!

My Goldendoodle looks just like yours, same cut, color, size and is also skiddish to anything new lol. Yep, I'd rather clean up the chips vs mud!!
@belladriver258
@belladriver258 Год назад
By the way I sell firewood for a living and I don’t use the broom I blow the chips out of my floor with my leaf blower lol so I’ll be do the same here too I rather have chips than mud mix with poops and who knows what else these dogs bring inside that mud with worms in it. Thank you for Video I can’t wait until I get it done

After a rain the chip don’t cling to your dog. They settle into the mud and make a nice non-mud area for your dog to walk.

Still holding up nicely. No mud. Everything has worked itself into place so we're not getting fur bombs either.

I know its over a year later but i have to ask how the transition from pine to gravel went? I have two dogs and a yard that doesn't get sun light so lots of mud. i want to switch from a dirt\ grass patch yard to a gravel yard. Did the pine shavings add more work when you tried to change your yard? I'm really trying to be positive about the shavings but don't want to add a lot more work if im going to gravel in a few months when the ground truly thaws. Thank you for the Video it was a great help!

Sorry, just saw this. I stuck with pine straw. The grass filled in and I only have a couple small spots. The pine shavings, after wet, add a nice layer over the mud. It works for walking over. But if it's a high traffic play area you'd have to keep adding. In that case pea gravel would be better.

That’s cool, but MY yard is all sand because it FlOODS and takes a week to dry out. So I’m stuck with muddy floors until I win the lottery and remove all the clay, put down French drains, and backfill and then sod it. Your Pups love chewin on that pine lol now instead of mud to mop up you’ve got pine to sweep up 🤷‍♂️ what’s worse lol

That was day one, so she's calmed down on laying in it and chewing on it. But still, she'll pick up some flakes as she walks or runs through it. IMO, better than mud because I can sweep it up whenever. When she came in from muddy yard via dog door I'd have to run and catch her before the whole house was a mess. A lot less stressful.

I heard that wood shavings discourage grass growth because it uses all the nitrogen in the soil when deteriorating. Have you noticed any issues with regrowing grass in those spots after the wet season?

The areas I had mud had issues growing grass, which is why there was mud. But 7 months later the same shavings are still preventing mud. I know a few spots out in the sun have grown there grass back, but I didn't watch to see how quick or healthy. If your goal is to grow the grass back, I wouldn't use the shavings.

I have a mud pit from my GSD.. have put sod down 2xs.. watched your video.. how has the pine shavings done? Have the dog dug in it?
@weekendhomeprojects
@weekendhomeprojects 10 месяцев назад
It’s been almost a year and it’s worked. The shavings cover the mud for a lot longer than I thought. Many months. You have to add to it from time to time due to the mowing, but it’s easy and cheap. The areas I have mud don’t get sun so never have grass. But, I suspect the shavings will prevent grass from growing in any spots you put it in. So that’s a con. But still better than muddy paws 3x a day.

Oh yeah, the dogs don’t pay it any mind. Mine don’t anyways.

Hi. Did it clean up easily in the spring? We have 2 GSD and I just can’t take the mud in the house anymore. We don’t know if we should put down straw or these chips. Any advice appreciated.
@weekendhomeprojects
@weekendhomeprojects 11 месяцев назад
After a rain or two the shavings laid down nice and wouldn’t stick to their fur. It’s worked out great this entire year so far. But I only have a few spots. But for $3-5 a bag you can do a large area for cheap. The other option for large areas is have some pea gravel delivered.

Once the shavings get wet it’s no longer sticky and sits above the mud as a barrier. Not a great solution, but still a cheap option. Im still using it.
