A River Thames Mudlarking Adventure!
Join Monika Buttling-Smith and I as we climb down a ladder onto the Thames foreshore as the sun goes down. The Thames is so beautiful at night with its colourful sparkling lights and who knows what lies beneath it waiting to be discovered. Monika has discovered some beautiful objects during her time mudlarking the Thames and she shows me some of her previous finds today too. We filmed this outing before the lockdown for those of you who are wondering.
Monika is an admin on two fantastic mudlarking facebook pages: (1) Thames Foreshore Finds and (2) River Thames Mudlarking Finds.
We then take a trip to Scotland to meet Scottish Mudlarkers Nicole and Craig Lind. You can find their youtube channe ‪@scottishmudlarking‬

Hi Nicola, you have a new fan, my mum, who is 92! I had been telling her about the things you and Simon find along the Thames, and she called me last night to tell me she was watching a "nice, gentle lady finding a lot of interesting things at the Thames shore." Well, of course, it turned out to be you and she had already watched 4 videos, in one evening. She's hooked, says she would like to try mudlarking herself! She's only 5'2" so we'd have to watch she doesn't get swallowed up in the mud🌞

Where I live, they have just renovated one of the buildings in the High Street. It turned out to be, behind it's facade, much earlier than they thought and dates to the 1300s. Most of the original roof tiles were in place and were covered in cat paw prints.

Amazing how huge that kiln furniture is - it's much smaller here! Love those beads, especially the Venetian bead. I can never quite grasp how you are able to see those tiny pins!! Thanks ever so much for introducing our channel Nicola! :) That's so kind of you! Happy mudlarking

Lovely to be introduced to Scottish Mudlarking! Beautiful finds and such incredibly gorgeous scenery. I am especially loved the dappling on the seal, camouflaging it against the seaweed-covered rock.

Yes we would love to see Nicola in Scotland ; maybe introduce her to your great mudlarking / beachcombing sites not exclusively anybodies by the way or did you not know that ? Perhaps if you could find your way to an apology for not quite stating who you thought the troll was rather than putting the reputations of other scottish mudlarking channels in doubt You never did name the troll which if you care to look is most likely one of your own subscribers and nothing to do with any of the SCOTTISH mudlarking channels An apology is in order ; tell the truth or dont bother and continue as you are ; either way the truth will out sooner or later You dont grow big by making others look small ; there is a word for that reflect on it

Some very nice finds and so interesting, but it gets dark very quickly in London it was bright and sunny and you went under the bridge and it was night. Beautiful night shots of the river and the lights Nicola! Thank you for the positive ID of the thistle and rose pipe bowl at the start of you video -I found one with the same foot and design but partly broken on the same day that we met on the foreshore, I thought it might be a union type of design between Scotland and England but I didn't know how old it was so even though it is only a bowl only and has a slice out of it I'm happy 🙂 Nice to see an echinoid in the mix and Monica's horseshoe is lovely as is her paw print tile that was shown later x.

I was astounded to see you digging up clay pipes to be used for tobacco which was exported to your country by America. It is so historical to see the pipes. Money from the tobacco supported the colonies. They are part of American history. How wonderful!

How lovely to see all the distant lights from the buildings. Much like a lit Christmas tree many of us can't have this year. So your lark on the foreshore is my video Christmas tree. I do like your friend, have seen her a few times and appreciate the joy and interest you both show in small things. After I watch this I am going to go have a look at my maternal great-grandmother's memory crock. She glued so many small things on it that you often find, a padlock, pipe bowl, a doll's face. All to remind her of home when she came to Canada. I have a new appreciation of it because of the many small things you have found, When I look at it I always hope to find something new and, sometimes I do. Hey Nicola. I love your videos every Sunday. I live here in Chicago, but when I was a student in England for two years I had the opportunity to travel throughout England, Whales, and Scotland. I especially love London, Bristol, and Edinburgh. I really hope to be back again soon one day to visit Cornwall, and who knows, maybe do a bit of mudlarking. See ya next week 😁⚓️

What a wonderful thing to do! Anything done on familiar ground but later, at night, is always interesting-- the dark makes familiar things strange. That little coral bead that Monika showed was intriguing; coral was worn in many cultures as a talisman against drowning, and I've even known a surfer in this day and age who likes to wear a bead for the same reason. It was also considered helpful in preventing attacks by robbers while you traveled. Loved the extra video at the end from the Scottish Mudlarkers-- I'll definitely check them out? (Are there any Welsh mudlarkers? I am curious!) And I'm looking forward to next week's video and the mystery you'll be telling us of. Thank you!
