"Your name is Muhammad Ali." Those words mean so much to Ali coming from Cosell. When he first told the world to no longer refer to him as Cassius Clay, but by his Muslim name of Muhammad Ali, Cosell did just that. While the rest of the media joked about it, Cosell never referred to him as Clay again. He usually just called him "Champ",even while Ali was in limbo and had lost his title in court and not the ring. Ali never forgot how Cosell had his back when very few did
I'm a grown ass man but i just burst into tears at the end..That was so powerful and moving..Wonderfully genuine relationship these two had..Beautiful.. R.I.P to both of you
@@Happyッ-r4q so you said, how did you come up with that?? I said a spiritual concept, Gods interaction with man?? If you understood that you wouldn’t have said, how do you come up with that?? Now you don’t even know me or my understanding of the Bible, and you’re challenging me me to some kind of competition?? Again a sign of somebody that doesn’t know God or understand scripture
Was there ever a World famous athlete and sportscaster that got along like these two? They woulda made a helluva comedy team... love the mutual respect here.
It could only be Ali who could humanize Howard Cosell. Ali was so unique I'm not sure that I can properly explain it. He was not just a "jock" celebrity . Look at athletes both before and after Ali. None of then carried his charisma, genuineness, integrity. warmth, and everything else. Watching him with Cosell in that first clip, imagine any other celebrity being that articulate and respected. His personality was soooo likable but he also had gravitas, in other words you knew this guy was important and real. For him to come out the 60s alive is astounding! He I think gave us the first ( and only) athlete that even political leaders took seriously. He was not "a fighter" , he was a man who was about peace, equality, honesty ( esp with himself) who truly wanted to help who also happened to be a "boxer" in his day job.
Ali was simply brilliant ... morally and intellectually superior to most people in the World. ... The Historical importance of His rants and protests against the Viet Nam Draft was and still remains monumental.
Men can cry when sports guys die....right? I loved the Ali Cosell relationship. Because it started out with a modicum of respect. Then grew into a loving friendship. Just shows.
Ali maybe did not have a lot of formal education, but he was one of the most intelligent men in and out of the ring. That was a big reason why he was so great.
There has never been and probably will never be, a relationship between a reporter and athlete that transcends beyond sports like this. These two working together were as entertaining as any of Ali's fights, well close anyway. The ending words by Cosell should be played over at Ali's funeral, so moving.
2023.. 32 yo and still tearing up. The world simply loved this man regardless of his boxing record. They loved the charismatic, confident, humorous , poet, peacemaker and rebel in Ali.
The end line when he said I love you was priceless and timeless , it made me cry instantly ! Wow how can such a phrase cut through me like that ??? Because he meant it with all his heart and came from his heart ❤️🌹🇬🇧👍
You need to be old enough to remember the exchanges between Ali and Cosell during the sixties and seventies live on TV to really appreciate this, Wide World of Sports or whatever, it was magic.
They can always learn, and some of them will. Through the internet and his/their achievements, people will always have a way to learn about the greatest of all time and his ol' pal Howard.
the friendship and respect in this video brings tears to me.. those memories are priceless.. the love is the fuel to our souls. RIP FOR BOTH OF YOU LEGENDS
We watched them when they were young and strong as well as when they became old and frail and now we even appreciate them more when they are gone. RIP Mr. Ali and Mr. Cosell.
chrishasaclue Muhammad Ali did have caregivers including his wife Lonnie whom he married in 1986 and she cared for him as the affects of Parkinson’s disease grew progressively worse after being diagnosed in 1984.
That ending made me cry, the way cossel says good bye to his friend, he was very ill at that time but got out of his bed to say those words. That’s true friendship. Rip to them both
cossell and ali are a shining example to us all of muslim and jew putting their differences aside, having mutual love and respect, if only the rest of the world could follow suit, its 2016 I hope in the future we can all just get along! life is too short, peace in the middle east..
Great point! At the of Thomas Hauser's book he says "last Christmas Ali called me to wish me a merry Christmas, imagine, a Muslim calling a Jew to wish him well on a Christian holiday? there's a lesson in there for anyone paying attention" obviously you were sir.

Right!!! I felt that.... And every time I heard it it broke me down into tears... I understood it because I too understood Muhammad Ali. Many of "Us" do ❤
Well,he knew he was in the last "rounds"..and he always loved ALI..he was sad because in a prefect world ALI would be 32 and he would be doing the comment on his fights!!😥😥
Great memories as a kid of these two gentlemen and their humorous repartee on ABC's Wide World Of Sports. They were so good together. You could always tell the animosity they exhibited toward each other on camera was a joke. A chance for them to box with words and after the "match" was over and done with you could still see the joy they had in each other's company. Classic duo!
I am truely blessed that i was able to see their friendship blossom into the internal loving bond that we all wish we could have. Love both and they left a mark on this old soul.
Wow this is a heart felt tribute to The Greatest boxer ever. More than just a boxer & more than his riches. He was a legend that stood for something bigger than himself! God bless Muhammad Ali!!! 🙏
God Bless Their Souls...Cosell got it before everybody else who Fell in Love with Ali after 75 Did He knew that Kid from Louisville Kentucky was Genuine And Great
Cosell was one of few who understood, what Ali wanted to achieve outside of the ring and that he was way bigger than boxing. That's why he said' "... you're free...". This gets me every time. Beautiful.
Howard Cosell "You are free to be who you want to be, I LOVE YOU" AAAAAAAAAWH!! WHAT A FRIENDSHIP RIP CHAMP & COSELL!! : ). I ENJOYED AND LOVED YOU BOTH!
My best friend and spiritual mentor was a black man from Trinidad. I am a white man from West Virginia raised in Ohio . Most the differences in people are cultural, not racial. If we can overcome the cultural we will be blind to the Racial. Acceptance and love is the answer
Well they are brother don't let the propaganda of the media and the psychopath leaders fool you. They just want to put the attention there so people don't realize what those leaders are doing.
As I watched the video I asked my heart to give me the words mingled with tears to express my sentiments regarding the relationship between Howard Cosell and Muhammad Ali. Now that the tears have stopped trickling down my face the words to describe their relationship freely flow. The relationship between Howard Cosell and Muhammad Ali was "A friendship meant to be."
How can someone hate Muhammad Ali? How? How can you hate this wonderful human being?! Yet I have seen many who do hate him. I'll never be able to understand them.
I saw Ali in a very exclusive setting in Vegas maybe the late 1980s. Only a handful of folks allowed in and I was lucky enough to be one of them. Ali stood not 2 feet from me for a solid 5 minutes. I wanted so much to say something but I was in total awe. 15 minutes before that I carried on a conversation with George Foreman who was also there. George was easy to talk to and I had grew up near his East Texas training camp and he recognized me. But Ali just totally rendered me speechless.
The world will never see another duo like Muhammad Ali and Howard Cosell. Two legends who will not go unremembered in the annals of not only popular culture history but world history as well.
I miss these guys. People were different, athletes were different and sports journalists were actually sports journalists. Ali and Cosell were fantastic together and I'm glad to have witnessed it as it happened. 🙏
One thing I noticed about Muhammad which really amazes me is his quotes. Whether it be jokes or something wise or trash talk, it was ALWAYS unique. Like this here 3:40, it’s just a gem you never see anywhere no more. And when he he was asked how many squats does he do he said “I don’t count, I only count when it starts to hurt”. May Allah reward him with Jannah. 🙏
Wow..i remember watching this live when it originally was broadcast...but to watch it again..i did not realize how powerful a friendship these two men had in real life. Powerful and beautiful...happy 70th birthday Ali...You are the greatest!
This shit will really make a grown man cry, when he said "your free to be who you want to be" damn that hit, hope both are enjoying whatever is next for all of us 🙏
When teaching boys to keep their emotions in check we corrupt their hearts. Howard and Mohammed both had tears in their eyes. Those last few seconds told more than any other moment about how to be a human. Thanks for allowing me to see this for the first time.
Saturday night boxing! What great memories! We would all gather around the Television. To watch the Greatest! I always knew Howard Cosell loved Ali. Just like the rest of us! And yes kids! The Television would go blank after Midnight! Telling my age! Who cares! ILOVED IT!
Grazie,Ali' ,per aver dimostrato al mondo intero che un solo uomo può fare la differenza. . Sei stato e resterai per sempre il più grande atleta di tutti i tempi.
Love at it's best from two of the world's greatest. How can hate exist after watching something like this. Howard and Muhammad has inspired me to love even more.
Wow that made me cry at the end there. See how Muhammad touched people. I think Muhammad Ali and Jesus Christ have the same message. The Muslims that follow the teachings of Muhammad Ali are the good guys.
