This was Joe Frazier's best fight. He never rose to this level again, but he did have some good fights. Joe pounded Ali as he had never been hit before.

Anyone that says Muhammad Ali did not take a lot of punishment over his career is absolutely insane
@youtoo2233

Yeah the punishment started in the 70's when he came back after the long layoff but before that he rarely took many punches
@beatlejim64
@beatlejim64 Год назад
In his prime...(1963-1967)...he had the reflexes to pull back from punches just in time. When he started his comeback in October 1970 against Jerry Quarry...Ali didn't have that ability anymore...he was heavy...he had slowed...he never learned the finer points of boxing...didn't know how to block a left hook...held his hands way too low...and just laid on the ropes and hoped his opponents got tired from hitting him. Not much of a strategy....he was basically a punching bag in the 1970's...and look how he ended up.

It's worth mentioning that in his 1st fight against Joe Frazier, Ali was coming back from a 3 years hiatus because he had been suspended for refusing to go to the Vietnam War (he stopped fighting when he was 25 and only returned when he was almost 29 years old) and only had 3 preparation fights before facing Smokin Joe (who was in his prime and put the best fight of his entire career). If this fight had happened years earlier, with Prime Ali from 64~67, the result might have been totally different.

That is true, he did spend his exile years fighting for his right to be reinstated but once he was he didn't train as he should have done if he were really determined to regain his championship. He would lie against the ropes and allow his opponents to pummel him, long before the famous rope a dope foreman fight. Many commentators described him as lazy.

Good point. The GOAT status for anything is not just about skill alone. There were certainly better boxers than Ali, but he had probably the best business branding out of all of them. His poetic tough talk, the attention of the war that made him a political figure, his bravado of self proclaiming himself the GOAT, etc. Even people who knew nothing about boxing wanted to see him win or lose. It’s the same with Mayweather. He says it all the time - he understands the BUSINESS side of Show Business. Frazier changed him. It changed him mentally and physically. Ali had to change his fighting style because of him. Ali won the next 2 but damn were they close. The third one is probably one of the closest ones.

Ali didn't train properly for the first Frazier fight. He should have waited for a few more months before taking on such a formidable opponent. Dundee said that before the fight in March 1971 he was going around like he was running for Mayor rather than being in the gym training for that fight. He is clearly out of condition watching the footage.

Thrilla In Manilla was essentially a draw. By the end of the 14th round Frazier was in a little better physical shape than Ali. Any of them could have been seriously hurt in the 15th. Ali and Frazier both super human athletes. I like Ali a lot but I think Ken Norton won all three of their fights. 🤼

Yep. I believe that the Leon Spinks loss was the true end of Ali. I remember it like it was yesterday. Spinks was undoubtably THE Ugliest fighter ever in the Heavyweight division. He was small compared to Ali. He had NO CLASS and proved it by his actions following this fiasco of a fight. It was horrible, and Ali was obviously only in it for the MONEY......!
