Three knockdowns in 24 seconds ... 58:58 59:10 59:22 ... that's literally three standing eight counts. Has anyone ever done it faster? I doubt it. Imagine how good he would have been in this fight if the government hadn't taken away the previous three and one-half years of his career.
I remember this fight. Yes, I'm old, but that means I have seen the likes of Ali, Liston, Frazier, Foreman and on and on. Proud of it. That was boxing. Anyway, Oscar was a hell of a fighter. He gave it his all, but Ali was simply better.
George Vreeland Hill. I appreciate what you've seen and conveying what you've seen to us. Ignore what these other guy say. They can't even put together a sentance, much less a cogent idea.
In 1970 I lived in Greenwich Village and saw Bonavena standing by an Argentine restaurant; as always he was a joker with good humour and a great personality.
Howard Cosell is being a true knucklehead calling this fight.. Nobody tells the greatest how to fight a fight..this is Ali second fight back ..since the United States government did him dirty. Cosell wants Ali to be what he was before the government shited on the champ..In time he was who we thought he was...wow..Howard wanted Ali to be superman in just his second fight back..from 3and a half years off ... WOW!!
Ali was a very big, very strong man. He didn't seem very big because his proportions were perfect. Alot of people said they were shocked when they stood next to him because he was a very big man. When Ali came back he had a habit of wanting to beat fighters at their own fight. Ali was a contrarian by nature, he performed his best only when no one gave him a chance. Ali was incredibly physically strong. In the clinches he even yanked Liston around.
when u fought Ali u fought the best. He was in a class by himself. Ali was the king of sting and he retired more fighters than social security.58:56 THAT SPEED! The way he dodged that punched and counter reacted with a punch of his own! WOW
i alaways found Holmes more consistent than this verison of Ali in the 70's. Honestly i can't see a 30 years old Holmes ( the age of Ali here ) suffering like this vs Bonavena. Holmes didn't do the schuffle, that's right, he was less fashy right than Ali right, but Larry seemed to have learn from Ali's style and then mastered it in more efficient way. Just my opinion
Well, he would still be knocked out in the 16th round if there was one. Ali didn't want to hurt him soon so he could guarantee a fight with Joe Frazier.
..hehe Bonavina i love you menn..but say his name [ Dont sat Cassius Clay menn..Terrell get beating up for call Ali Cassius Clay...lol..Say my name..!!! Say my name..!!! By the way, what i see is the hardest fighters, are in real live soo sweeet..see Mike Tyson..George Foreman..yess the most of them, i think ;]]]
Oscar does a lot..lands big occasionally...breaks Ali's rhythm with awkward motion...etc. what he doesn't do is win more than 4 rounds...tough fight but not close.. 10-3-1 Ali at the stoppage. Judges had Ali decisively ahead. ,Enraptured with his own narrative is missing fact that Ali is out landing Oscar decisively...including a huge advantage in head snapping power punches. Ironically, Oscar s best moment..end of nine...he was hurt badly for 2:20 then wobbled Ali ...not enough to win a round where he was battered for 2/3 of it.
This is a good, tough fight! But my favorites are Ali’s fights against Foreman and Frazier. He also had an incredible fight against Ken Norton which many think Norton won. Norton fought toe to toe with Ali. He was a great fighter but you have to knock down the Champion to win. Points aren’t enough. These Ali fights are still worth watching over and over because Ali had a great style of boxing. Also, the Leonord fights against Hagler and Hearns. Thanks to RU-vid for making these available again. I’m not into UFC fights and today’s Boxers are boring. I don’t even know who the Heavyweight Champ is. No one cares anymore about boxing because of the lack of personalities. Ali was a great entertainer and people loved to hear him talk and tell jokes, anecdotes and give out sound bites. He was a master at nicknames and sound bites that the Press at the time just ate up! The Thrilla in Manila! The Rumble in the Jungle! He will fall in round 5! And then he would back that up and do it! No one but Ali did that! He was one of a kind! I miss his personality and good sense of humor. Nobody in Boxing 🥊 like him anymore! RIP Ali-You are unforgettable!
@@highdefboxing8056 Yeah, Ok. Ali was popular around the world! He was an Icon! He used to say he could go anywhere in the world 🌎 and be welcomed and invited to dinner 🥘 at peoples homes and even to stay for a while. I think he was right! People idolized him and loved him! He was a great entertainer, not just a Boxer! RIP Ali I miss his personality and humor.
Just watched the last round again and the ref didn’t give Oscar the standing 8 count either time. Ali was chasing the ref and Oscar instead of going to a neutral corner the ref couldn’t stop Ali.
Bonevena was tough as nails, frazier fought him twice, went the distance twice. Ali's left hook in the 15th was a thing of beauty. Fight was over at that point.
Belburg Bonavena would destroy nowadays; the only reason he wasn't a champ was because he was fighting in the golden age of boxing, against some of the greatest fighters of all time like Ali and Frazier.
***** Indeed, he would take out todays heavys, as well as most of the 80's and the late 70's.Could see him beating Ken Norton and Leon Spinks, Foreman should've given him and Quarry a shot, even though Bonavena wasn't the same by the time George got the belt.
Commentator (Howard Cosell) JUST DOESN'T GET IT in round 4. -ALI IS IMITATING BONAVINA'S STYLE! - Mirroring it back to him in that crouch & bull position. Good for frustrating the man & tiring him, too. Let's watch.
This guy Clancy keeps calling Ali Clay. That’s disrespectful. I’ll admit Cassius Clay was a cool name and I wouldn’t have gotten rid of it but that was Ali’s choice. He didn’t answer to Clay anymore.
Bonavena would have kicked Ali's A$$ if he was just as big. Ali was being a bully because he knew he had the reach and height. If only Bonavena would have been just like Marciano...he was almost there, but Marciano could take more punches and hit harder, and knew how to get in under his opponent. If you notice also, the Fkn referee was biased against Bonavena...he didn't even give him the 8 second count and let Ali come right after him when Ali was supposed to go to his corner.
How does mouthy Cosell miss what's happening to Bonavina's face? And how his boxing skills are falling apart. Charging & grabbing are NOT impressive skills. Strong brawler.
Ali wasn't a particularly thickly muscled or intimidating looking guy, but one thing I've noticed is that when he had to wrestle guys up close, he had no problems shoving them around. Perhaps he was little stronger than most people thought?
+Huxxy This. Watched all of his fights and noticed the same thing, finally someone thinking the same. When he wrestled with guys he was kinda strong and would always win lol, he had some power in his hands.
Ali was very strong. He always dosed his punches to last to the 15th round and most of the time he did it it served him good. He never liked to train by his own admission and lost some fights due to poor training and bad shape and condition. But when he had to fight for an important match he always won! If he was not so involved in other things he'd have been even greater!
+Huxxy Ali was surprisingly strong and heavy handed. He didn't knock people out with one-punch power because he rarely stepped into his punches with the proper leverage like other "rough and tumble" type fighters. Usually, Ali would be backpedaling, diminishing the power his 6' 3" 215lb body could produce.
just more of a testament to Ali's chin, heart and will to win. Even being off for 3 years and his 2nd fight back, in a very sluggish performance that actually people are overlooking the fact that Bonavena was TOUGH as NAILS and could punch HARD. awkward but a very durable and tough fighter.....and so it adds to the appearance that Ali was sluggish and not what he used to be, he was not fighting a bum and was starting to prove he other qualities like Ali's chin and determination
Correction: Mandatory 8 count was given after first dockdown. It was the second known where the mandatory eight count was not given, Ali was not directed to a neutral corner, of the Ali/Bomavena fight; Bonavena congratulated Ali as the Champion and Ali stated this was his toughest opponent yet (As of that date. Truly a great fight!
Because in Argentina allways Will be Clay. We dont call him "Clay" in a bad way, is a Signal of love and respect. Ofcourse Hi is the great Mohamed Alí, but here we say the two names: Mohamed Alí / Cassyus Clay. After this figth, in Argentina to Many fathers call Cassyus yo their childrens. For us, he allways Will be the BEST!!! Sorry for my inglish. AGUANTE BONAVENA!!!!!
Ali's not fighting the same way, partly because this is a different style of opponent. It's 15 rounds. Ali has TIME to figure the man out, wear him down & teach his opponent some respect. Ali hits him pretty often, as we go along. Round 8 starts.
Bonavena was really tough. Frazier collapsed after fighting him, completely exhausted. Problem was this was Ali's second fight after his 31/2 years layoff. He was not really fit and still wasn't 100 percent when he took on the champ Frazier. Who the hell takes on one of the best heavyweights of all time in only his third fight after such a long layoff? Joe Louis said Ali will never be champion again 'cause even if he had been off for 1 year it would be too much ring rust but for over 3 years it was impossible. As we all know the great Louis was dead wrong and Ali recaptured the crown and made fools of the best of us.
Ali looks horrible after long layoff,Frazier could net wait to get Ali in the ring in this shape.frazier knew he was going to kick his ass watch the interviews before the fight.
A south american Rocky Balboa, such a couratgeus guy . This Ali´s last punch was a luck. What a lucky man he´s been . He looked realy lost as Bonavena was getting bigger and bigger thru the fight. What a pity. I admire Bonavena!
Edward Chacon Maybe your luck in boxing is what you make of it. Both fighters exremely tired at the end. Oscar left himself open to the short left more than one time. He almost walked on the the finisher. Ali would have gotten up from the same punch, as he proved against the greatest left-hooker, Joe Frazier.
brother there is no luck in boxing, that punch was after Ali dodge the Bonavena responding inmediately, do you realize wath kind of reflex and speed is needed to do that? call luck to the preparation that is needed its almost an insult, that is called a counter punch it requires a lot of trainig and has nothing to do with luck.
i seem to remember that this happened after Ali's 4 yr lay off . his best years ! anyone that has an issue with GREAT needs to remove 4 years at their prime ! Ali was the greatest
Ali's performance was on that day far below his best and this is not intended to play down Bonavena's display of great heart. He and Ali belonged to an era when heavyweight boxing was at it's best and no era before or after compares to that one. Those were greatest heavyweights with or without world titles.
had to put up with the annoying cunt for all the big fights back in the day. we'd have wanted to turn the sound down, but then one couldn't hear the crowd or the punches connect. quite a dilemma with Cosell announcing.
Howard Cosell was good at his trade and I always enjoyed a fight more when old Howard was there. I saw him once back in the 1970's. What a strange-looking man he was.
Ringo definitely wasn't a pushover i recently watched joe Frazier ringo 1 again and ringo should've got the nod ..had ringo winning 4 rounds joe Frazier winning 4 rounds with ringo getting 2 knockdowns and taking the championship round with 2 rounds even
