I first met mulberries at work. Riding along a railroad branch line I saw blackberries growing in a tree, then noticed they were all along that one line! Found out they were Mulberries, then noticed different trees ripened all through the summer. I still need to go back to get cuttings for my garden and as gifts!

One thing to keep in mind is that unripened mullberry is hallucinogenic

I love my mulberry trees. A friend brought me one from Ohio as a seedling she was surprised when i told her the elm she brought me was actually a mulberry.

I spent age 3 to age 5 living in mulberry trees. Grandad had 2 black 2 red and 1 white. Black wonderful, red great but somewhat tart, white, sweet but musky.

Great topic. Mulberry smoothies are the best! Another lookalike is the invasive Paper Mulberry: Morus papyrifera (now Broussonetia).

I was presently surprised to find a Mullberry tree growing in my yard after allowing wild trees to grow, birds must plant them after eating them. Neighbors poison it along with all my fruit trees and evergreens from jealousy, claiming blight. A second one started coming up now. I had plum trees that sprung up from roots quickly spreading, that died easily from neighbor's herbicides, but Black Walnut trees planted by squirrels are very resistant to herbicides. Hardness of wood seems to make a big difference.

Being retired, I’m old enough to know better, but when I was on Holiday in Greece, I saw a drooping bunch of what I thought were small grapes. As soon as I started munching I noticed the colour on the stalks and spat out what was left. 😱 I didn’t experience any side effects but expected to keel over and die!!!!

Lol. I've never seen a sassafras, but I've seen thousands of mulberries. My hubby went & picked a bunch, while drinking mulberry wine from the year before. He didn't know, you can't eat the green ones, and puked his guts out. Lol. Make sure, you only eat the VERY ripe berries, and if you eat the leaves, cook them, and pour the water off first, before eating.
