I grew up in Iran. My house was next to a public park with 40 plus giant persian white mulberry trees. Government there plants fruit trees in the public parks for free community use. I live in California now. I'm planning on planting them here but we have many gophers. That's why I asked in my earlier post.
Awesome Mulberries! We have a dozen mulberry trees around our house and around our horse coral. The horse love eating the leaves. We make a healthy tea from the mulberry leaves as well. My wife makes and cans a lot of jam from the tons of berries we get each year! Awesome stuff!
The leaves are also incredible for eating. They are 20% protein. We use them in Soups, Salads, and i also use them to make Sirloin Garlic Soy Rolls. Nutritious and Delicious.
Hi Jay, big fan of your work, im from Portugal and watch your videos for some years trying to replicate all that you teach. It seems that your garden change a bit, has if have less trees or something. How about you do a tour video?? Really miss seeing your garden !!
I'm in the Netherlands and just planten a tree 2 years ago. This year it looks like I'm getting fruit. It's only been in leaf for about a month so will be a while before they are ripe
I have a odd situation. I believe i have one of the fruitless varieties of Mulberry. It is root bound with a huge white oak. It basically growing right out of the trunk of the oak. I live in SE Texas, there are numerous wild Mulberry trees in my area. They are growing in the fence lines along the roads. They are easy to spot, deer are under them everyday. Thats how ive found them. Here is my thoughts. Im trying to air layer my fruitless Mulberry, once i have it going, i want to graft the native Mulberry to my tree! What ca' think?
I have plenty of them in my backyard. Kept all of them in about 6 feet in height. They produce hundreds of sweet fruits similar to blackberries but smaller in size. The tree is quite easy to propagate. The one I got are dwarf everbearing mulberries.
I don't understand what are you saying because my mulberries taste like multi flavored sugar syrup and blackberries taste like lemon.. 😂 Also my mulberry fruits are about 6 inches long .
Everything is late this year, thanks to all the cold fronts that came in from Cali. Mind birds. If I lived in town, it would be white mulberries, not black or red. I keep hearing mulberries are banned in town, but a lot of people have males (major pollen producers) in their front yards. Mine are all self-fertile. We have 1 mature black Pakistan, and 3 immature everbearing. Birds are all freaked out about the berries, but thanks to the wind, cannot hang on limber branches LOL.
Great video as usual. My pakistan mulberry has a lot of fruit on them this year too, but unfortunately the ants get to the fruit before I do. Do you have problems with ants too?
Hi Jay. Great video. Do the mulberries need male and female? Does the ShangriLa accept zone 9A.? Id like to make a trip up this weekend to get at least one. Do you ever deliver to north Tucson region? Thanks for all the great info.
I’d love to grow a ShangriLa I wish they had a dwarf version of it. I know they have other dwarf mulberries but I heard the flavor is lacking on them. Any suggestions for a dwarf mulberry variety that tastes great? Thanks for the video!
@@ArizonaFruitTrees yeah maybe I’ll try that. I just wanted to keep the fruit within reach. I also saw a “weeping” mulberry where the branches go straight down. Thanks for the tips and info!
I have what was supposed to be a Persian mulberry but which I’m pretty sure is a dwarf everbearing. It’s grown fast and has abundant small black fruits, but yeah quite bland. I’ve now grafted Shangri-La and Jan’s Best scions onto it and hopefully the dwarf rootstock besides being already established will also keep the other varieties from getting too big, with the help of pruning. But even the “dwarf” everbearing mulberries grow fast and get pretty tall without pruning, I gather.
They do not do well in containers because they have a deep large taproot that needs to go into the ground, but you can plant it in ground and keep it trimmed to the size that you want it and it will actually help it produce more fruit
My tree has fruit like yours but then it has sort of clusters with 80-100 in a space of about a square foot. They don't get very big and don't taste sweet. Should i prune those "clusters" out?
You can keep them small via pruning. But they grow back fast! (Which is a good thing, in my opinion. Lots of deer where I live; so I like things that can grow back after being nibbled on.)
@@ArizonaFruitTrees , I have two main trunks in one hole and I think I have to cut one out so the tree can get nice and thick. I just want to make sure I do it at the right time.
For me, the gophers/squirrels/chipmunks don’t bother it too much. But I had to put wire around the tree to keep the deer from eating it or rubbing the bark off. After a few years when the tree was bigger I took the wire away with no problem.
