Without a doubt, this particular episode ranks solidly within my top-5 favorites of the entire X-files series. The utter simplicity of almost ZERO dialogue between them only adds to the 'purity' of the working/personal-relationships between them, both on-screen...and off-screen as well. I am glad to have almost every episode on DVD.
Agreed, the way this episode was done was simply amazing and one of my favs too!! Well done crew! It also really gets you thinking about all the tech and AI surrounding you and your world!
This was one of the best parts of the new x files season. Unfortunately Gillian doesn't want to continue. I will miss her so bad. It will never be the same. That fish was hilarious.
Some humans can be that way regarding Costumer Service on both ends of the table, so maybe the Computers learned that from someone else. Blackmailing them for a tip, well that was something else.
this was the best episode of the revival for me and definitely in my top 10 x-files episodes. it's cute and funny but also really creepy and relatably frustrating and ominous re: dealing with automation. the fact that david and gillian carried this episode with such a minimal dialogue is a testament to their chemistry and the great script. this is one of those episodes that you can tell was written by two women (scully's vibrator, her night routine, etc.) and it was overall really refreshing to watch.
OH man, the silence is just disturbing alone. The fact that the machines force them to tip them by blackmail is just more disturbing than being pissed off at a human waiter or staff. SADLY THAT IS FUTURE WE ARE BUILDING IF WE ARE NOT CAREFUL TO CONTROL AI TECHNOLOGY. At least they get food from a real place at the end.
Agree. Mulder’s sat nav in the car . I get very frustrated with this technology. Always trying to take you on the wrong route doesn’t matter how you have it seat. Also the thought of automated cars freaks me out. Would be alright if it worked like KIT. Anyone old enough to remember that show?
+John Murphy Nah definitely not. X-files was always on the ball with stuff like this. It always had a knack for expanding and warping very human like fears and worries. Sure go watch 'ghost in the machine' from back in Season 1 . It's about an AI becoming sentient and killing people in an office building. It touches on scruffy minded rebel entrepreneurs such as Gates/Jobs/Zuckerberg (And this was long before there was a Zuckerberg) and them going against the system. The episode has a heavy 2001 space odyssey Hal 9000 atmosphere but the gist is the same as in this episode. Relying too much on technology will come back to haunt you in the end.
Crazy, isn't it? It's like they were massively ahead of the curve in taking up AI as a topic back in 2016. The episode basically openly says that it was prompted by the Tay Twitter disaster, but I didn't take AI seriously back then.
People don’t get the message of the episode.....? People still sleeping in a world that soon will be completely AI. Alexa. Siri. Sophia. Drones Etc great message. Can you imagine a world where AI learns from human behavior.?.. 😳😳😳 robots would be more dangerous than humans.
Wow, it's actually kind of embarassing for me that I didn't take AI seriously back when the episode aired or when you left your comment. Now everybody realizes the dangers of AI.
Arguably the best and most disturbing episode of the new X-Files. I was asking myself if this was going to be a silent movie after the first five minutes. And if the ending isn´t a tribute to the original Terminator film I don´t know what. I´m not so sure if it´s wise to create AI that imitates human behaviour. If I recall Frank Herbert´s sci-fi epic "Dune" correctly, in the (very far) future computers and robots with human-like abilities and mental capacities are outlawed. I think we should live by this.
We were talking about the internet and ai with my dad so he showed us this. It’s pretty weird to me now because I watched this before the rest of the show. I’m currently on S7E18, and it’s still hard to think of this ep as the same Mulder and Scully from what I’ve watched so far lol.
Anyone else noticed the large amount of sound "cameos"? I noticed something from Star Trek - but also the beginning of a techno song from the 90s - when the food appears... If anyone could tell me the name of that song...
Okay at least I'm not alone. It's definitely from some 90s/2000s techno song. At first I thought (not joking) that it actually Sandstorm by Darude because that would fit the time the episode was made (the Sandstorm meme started in 2015 and the episode came out in 2016), but it's not Sandstorm. It also isn't Zombie Nation by Kernkraft 400, nor La Rock 01 by Vitalic. But it's one of those old golden greats and it drives me up the wall that I can't quite place it.
Good lord, you just saved me from a sleepless night. Just watching the episode for the first time after realizing that I have some catching up to do wrt 2010s films and tv (I never even knew there was an X-Files reboot), and I instantly recognized that chime but couldn't quite place it.
I just saw this and I have to say this episode was original and interesting. The lack of human dialogue was a little boring, but the message is clear, the danger of relying too much on AI and automated technology. God help us all if it ever turns on us like this. Sure it was different from the regular mythos and monster of the week plots, but that’s the beauty of this show, never knowing what to expect next, other than one or both of the heroes will be there.
Lately my computer reboot itself after shutting down, they say it’s due to some Win10 fast start function, but I’m pretty sure it’s waking it self up for a purpose. So lately I’m unplugging all electronics just in case.
I do not like it too much when my Comcast Cable Box resets each day, is like tracking my TV viewing or something like it and I barely use it for sure. The Computer Updates, well I am never too sure about them either.
Looking at these 'bad and boring' episode comments, OMG, wake the heck up, unless your a troll. This could very well be in your future. This is 'Smart Cities'. But, they also normalize and 'disalarm' peolple through sci-fi. Everything you saw in this episode is real.
Congrats, you were five years ahead of the times in recognizing AI for what it is. I have to be honest, I didn't recognize it for the threat it is before the hype that started in 2023.

This episode is totally relatable in todays world what with smart homes ( too much AI reminds me of 2001 A Space Odyssey computer HAL) and drones which have great application but can be annoying and intrusive.
Well, they concluded this NEW season 11 just now. It only had 12 or 13 episodes I think, the plot is still ongoing but some characters are out of the picture. Oh, their shapeshifting half Alien X Men Powered Son is still alive too. I hope that they do another season soon.
