First part of our ascent to the Mulhacén peak, 3,479 meters of altitude.
On this first day we moved to Capileira (1,440 meters altitude), in the Alpujarra of Granada to begin the ascent to the Poqueira Refuge (2,500 meters altitude).
The activity is carried out in late spring so there are hardly any traces of snow on the peaks and temperatures are mild, although the heat presses a little as the day progresses and the physical effort becomes harder.
The first 4 kilometers are bearable until the abandoned village of La Cebadilla, built in the middle of the last century for the workers who worked in the Hydroelectric Power Station of Poqueira.
Then there is a steep climb to the Cortijos del Nante where we descend to reach the banks of the Nante River. We will go up this flow through a beautiful and lush stretch that is seasoned with the waterfalls of the river.
Just when the Veleta River mixes with the Nante we make the last and hard climb to the Poqueira Refuge, crossing the Acequias Baja and Alta and leaving behind the Cortijo de las Tomas.
Nice views from the refuge to the whole valley and the surrounding peaks, including the Mulhacen that we will face in the next day.
