Multi BL | Strange love (Critique) [BL] 

PLEASE READ THIS COMMENT! - Name of the shows, music, coloring and software in the description - This video is a critique, please make sure to read this comment. - I do not invite in any case to censor these shows, I do not have this pretension nor this desire. The goal of all my critical videos is simply to point out certain behaviors, tropes which are negative, or even dangerous. There are some BLs that I really liked in this video, like REALLY liked (ITSAY, Not me, Semantic error...) so again I'm not asking you to stop watching these shows, that would be shooting myself in the foot. - TURN ON THE SUBS I. THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE VIDEO (subs): ① Use of the terms "top" and "bottom” The problem is not so much the actual use of the terms that are used by gay people themselves but rather the way they are used. In general, they fit the heteronormative stereotypes of the top being "strong" (the man) and the bottom being "weak" (the woman). But this may not be a problem in itself. The problem is when being a bottom is almost seen as something shameful, as if it presupposes weakness, submission. I have an even bigger problem when the terms are used by outsiders (e.g. My engineer) who take the liberty of telling someone what PLACE they belong when it comes to TASTE and PREFERENCES. The fact that an outsider, such as a friend, would tell a gay person "you're a bottom because you're weak" just makes the spectators think that they are also legitimate to say that kind of thing. I've deleted a huge number of comments from people who were trying to figure out who was the top and bottom under my AU video of Seojun and Suho from True Beauty. It has nothing to do with looks, appearance, behavior, it's a personal preference that should only be decided by the person himself. ② Heteronormativity Definition of heteronormativity: “A heteronormative view therefore involves alignment of biological sex, sexuality, gender identity and gender roles. Heteronormativity is often linked to heterosexism and homophobia.” This binary and heteronormative place assignment can only be bad on many points that I won't list, instead I refer you to one of my videos: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-trnLWi75Ylw.html The fact that it is in a BL is even more shocking, shameful and especially disappointing. Heteronormativity is exactly what these shows should be fighting against, but they reinforce it. Because it is partly homophobic. Let alone the misogyny. ③ Normalization of stalking and toxic fangirling This trope infers a kind of legitimacy from straight girls fantasizing about gay couples to be able to stalk, fantasize, sometimes become aggressive in the pursuit of their "passion." Lovely writer series that I included in this video does a good job on the subject in general: it is a critique of the world of BL production in Thailand, whether it is by the direction, the staging and the relationship with the audience. Be it in series or in real life, gay people are not some kind of dolls, cute things, or simply objects, idols to be pampered, used or idealized: this kind of show maintains a distancing, a gap between gay couples and heterosexual couples, as if being gay was either something incredible or something appalling, in both cases: something out of the ordinary. ④ Women depicted as enemies Warning: I'm not saying that women can't be bad. I'm just pointing out the (annoying) tendency to reduce female characters in BLs to two things: fans or enemies. They either serve to amplify the relationship between the two characters by fantasizing their relationship or by serving as an obstacle to it. Fortunately this is not the case in all shows, there are very good female characters in some shows (Bad buddy, Semantic error...) but I wanted to point out this tendency in some shows to reduce women to characters that are only useful to the two men; they have no depth, their personality and story are limited to serving the two main characters. ⑤ “I’m not gay, I just like you” To cut to the chase, it's not the worst trope, but if you analyze it more deeply, it's pretty much homophobia. Maybe it can be considered as internalised homophobia, which should indeed be addressed more; but is not introduced as such in BLs : it’s rather used to convey the idea of "you are my one and only", a romantic thing. Could we talk about the romanticization of homophobia? I wouldn't go that far, but we could certainly discuss it. ⑥ Romantization of incest / brother trope I don't want to get into a moral debate about whether it's really incest when it's stepbrothers or people who were simply raised as such without blood ties. What bothers me about this trope is that it seems like circumstances are used to explain homosexuality of the characters. Kind of like with all-male high schools (Light on me, Color rush and lots of BL thai where they are all engineers??); it seems like proximity, contact with only men or circumstances are used to explain the love story. It's of course debatable and it's never said directly but I feel like this kind of trope has been used for a long time (also for lesbian love in western movies) and I would like to understand the exact reason, if it's not trying to find excuses and circumstances for "homosexual tendencies" (which then leads to say that it's “just a phase" because the person has never known "something else"). ⑦ Normalization of stalking Not a stereotype but a misrepresentation. Even if harassment is not always romanticized, it is at least normalized. And in itself it's up to everyone to decide whether or not to forgive someone who cheats. What bothers me a bit is the fact that it is recurrent to put gay people as unfaithful people. It just reinforces stereotypes. THE PERPETUATION OF STEREOTYPES THOUGH MEDIAS “And since films must tell their stories within a limited timeframe, directors may feel compelled to project instantly recognizable images, or stereotypes, to establish characterization. These stereotypes serve as justification devices for categorical acceptance or rejection of a particular group, and work as a “screening or selective device to maintain simplicity in perception and thinking” (Biery 47). Queer images in film created a false consensus of queer people, convincing heteronormative audiences that their knowledge of homosexuality was correct, when in fact they were only familiar with a stereotype. III. CLARIFICATIONS ABOUT A FEW SHOW - Light on me: I really liked the BL but there are some scenes that bothered me a bit (the first meeting of the main couple ??) but overall it's a nice BL. - Semantic error: don't get me wrong I think this is one of the best Korean BL. I just wanted to include it to show that even the best are not immune to some mistakes. - KinnPorsche: When I publish this video, only the first episode is released. So I rely only on the trailer. But I think it's pretty clear from the trailer itself. - Lovely writer: The BL did a very good job precisely on exposing the bad tropes in the industry. But I was a little bothered by the fact that people say it was a completely healthy relationship when there are moments that totally flout the whole moral of the show. - Not me: Same thing, I loved the BL but the physical violence is something to be reckoned with so I didn't want to leave it out despite my love for it. We can't say that the relationships in the show were entirely healthy (all of them). - Bad buddy: Even though I included bad buddy here, the show did well in many ways to break the stereotypes. If I do a video on good portrayals (good BLs) I will surely include it. Thanks for helping me to make this video and for watching!

I am glad to grow up into a person who is aware of how problematic these characters were specially since they were signifying a part of a person which is already stigmatised so these show's normalization of toxic traits was really frustrating

I feel like BLs are going through the same phase as KDramas did about a decade ago, and now KDramas are much better. I hope the same thing happens to the BL genre.

Okay let me tell you my opinion about this issue with BL (I know one ask, but anyways) First of all, BL takes you to a utopian world where no one gives a damn if you like your same-sex or not, you get almost everyone is accepting that you like a guy, you get supportive family, friends, and a supporting society, and as for your crush it doesn't matter whats their sexuality is, even if they are straight if you keep chasing that guy, in the end, he will going to fall in love with you, we always get a strong masculine guy, who is will always be a top, and will mostly going to identify as Straight guy who accidentally falls in love with a guy, and one less masculine guy, who is always be a bottom who will mostly is kinda dependent on his top, emotionally or mentally but he is dependent on his top, and due to this I had seen lots of comment under BL videos where girls wishing if they were born as a guy and can have a nice love story like them because they hadn't seen that harsh reality also Because in reality, it's not that easy for the LGBTQ+ community, like firstly it's kind rare where your friends and family will accept because they are some friends will no longer be friends with you and some family and relatives will no longer want in touch with you, and if we like someone, our first thing is he even gay, bi or pan by any chance if they are straight we just stop at that time and I know sometimes people take time to realize their sexuality, and sometimes our crush also end up liking us but that's kinda rare, and after all those struggles if we still get a partner then comes the society who will mostly be going to discriminate against us, I know people are changing right now but still a majority of people are still narrow-minded and homophobic, and you guys must be wondering why I still BL series, because I was kinda done with mostly main stream movies just showing us as the victim, like in movies and shows who features a gay character, they have like zero personality everything revoles around them being gay, like they are always shown as people who are closeted still struggling to come out, or every issue in their life is them being gay, I know my life is not going to be like that is shown in BL series, but don't show me that harsh reality everytime at my face, SO here my ted talks end

1:48 Not related but a few months before in one of my mother tounge chanels who are evidently homophobic took a video "survey" among college students about homosexual relations and all the students and proffesors showed their support on the topic and clearly said "love is Love" and these surveyors just started asking "is incest ok" like how the freak is that even related. The students were trying to contradict them but they went on saying "if homosexuality is okay r@pe is okay serial kill!ng is okay incest is okay" This is the first thing that came into my mind now. I always think a person need to do actual research while doing a work and sadly idek what the research was some of the BLs. Not everyone follow a top-bottom thing, and not everyone find out they are gay after meeting the guy. That has been a cliche, a homophobe hero and a confident gay hero and the confident one "makes" the other gay. That's simply not how it works, sexuality is not something a certian person can induce in one.right?

It was a good video. But in the Kinnporsche scene, Kinn is actually protecting Porsche from getting killed. Not spoiling more. It comes in 2nd episode. It’s not anything related to their relationship.

Addicted is one of the most aggressive and violent TV series I have ever seen in this genre. The fact that I only noticed one visual from it is a miracle.

This is so important, my friend that watches bl conplains of how toxic most bl shows are and I am glad you made a video on it!

I feel like most of the dramas (not based on webtoonts etc.) that portray a homosexual relationship are written by straight people. And that can lead to bad or incorrect representation even if it's unintentional. I personally wouldn't be confident about writing a mlm story. The least the writers should do is good research on the topic. These dramas have the same problem as dramas with hetero couple. Dramas with abuse, possessiveness and forced kissing seem to always be more popular and known than dramas that portray healthy relationship, with a few exceptions of course. I think it's sad because I would love to see more healthy relationships in dramas that can also be a good way to show teenagers how relationships should be. Recently I tried to watch a cdrama called "Well-intended love" and let's just say that the title is the biggest lie ever. Would never recommend it to anyone. Thank you for making this video, because BL dramas are really popular, but a lot of them have room for improvement when it comes to good representation.

I saw this now on my phone, and I'm going to see this in my laptop tomorrow and then I'm going to watch it on tv and finally I'll broadcast it in a theater. THIS NEEDS MORE RECOGNITION. I've been waiting desperately for a compilation of the toxic tropes that often accompany bl and you delivered it without a flaw. Thai BL has progressed though, and one of the examples of that can be seen in bad buddy. It tackles so many stupid stereotypes and concepts very often potrayed in bl's and it deserves a standing ovation (also the women representation is gold). Plenty other representations do exceed expectations and stomp tropes. This was very much needed for the community. Thank you for an amazing work as always.

This is a beautiful and insightful video. Normalization of these would lead to people thinking they are normal and would not be able to distinguish a healthy relationship. Nice video

guys i just want to mention the fact that you can still like this series and some of them can be your ultimate fav bl series as long as you recognize their wrong doings. And as long as you do not cone with this type of behaviour! You can enjoy a series but be open minded about what's wrong and right which can lead to really interesting and important discussions.

What I LOVE the most about this channel is the awareness. I'm ALWAYS going to suffer from an Obsessive love stalker since I was 14. Until the laws change it's a sad reality. What I found out talking to teens in awareness groups or being in them for mental support until the stalker/attempted murderer/kidnapper was going to be released again in my case. Is that teens DON'T see this as abuse or anything. That's the scariest part about this. I had a mom BEGGING me to talk to her 16-year-old child. She was CLEARLY in an abusive relationship and could one day end up with my fate. That broke my heart. I told the mom she never had to beg me for something I would be honored to help with. By the end of our talks, meetings, etc. ONLY THEN she understood the situation she's in. Your videos are shining light on EVERYTHING wrong in relationships. You're helping so many people making these edits and maybe you don't know you're helping. Thank you for everything. Truly thank you. I'm so glad you're showing the REAL ISSUES with these dramas that isn't being seen because of how it's edited. Sadly, younger generations especially watch them thinking this is normal. It's not. Growing up with these kind of experiences and scenes all around me, these tropes were really very traumatizing to watch. Even when I was not aware about healthy and consensual relationships, I dropped almost all of these dramas because of few triggering scenes like these. I could not handle Tharn Type without feeling nauseous.

The amount of abusive relationships is massive in BL rn. Every BL i come across has at least one scene where the 'top' is forcing himself on the 'bottom' and it is just seen as 'cute' or 'sexy' and the fact that it is abusive is completely ignored. Most of the mainstream BL dramas portray abusive relationships for example, TharnType, 2gether, etc. I hope these tropes are removed very soon but I don't think it will be fast. Praying tho🤞

0:49 I feel like in this show they actually criticized the 'husband-wife' trope where he is actually scolding him 'does calling me a wife make you feel superior'? He also says that 'you dont need to call us husband and wife, we are just boyfriends'. This show also criticized 'im not gay i just like him' trope. I feel like its the most unproblematic BL ive come across, with no non-consensual scenes and also it doesnt portray women in a negative manner

Although some I'm a little biased on since skme of them are my favorite shows I really appreciate how ur channel goes into the signs and behaviors of toxic relationships

I actually just now started watching bl and light on me was my first bl. I personally agree with your point in it ,other than that the relationship was pretty fine (pls correct me if I am wrong I watched it a month ago so I don't remember much). Taegyung was really open with what was in his mind and he moved on from da on when he saw that he needs time to heal. While the main lead was although cold to him but never really showed physical violence. U can say he was too shy to express his emotions. He really cared for taegyung and waited till the taegyung likes him and never forced him to.

More actual sane gay men should be writing these bl’s instead of women because we are just being used as a gimmick of their fantasy. It’s sad how badly gay people are represented in most bl films. To the point where we just look like the most toxic and evil people in the world. And don’t even get me started how homophobic they are. Because hyper-feminine/feminine gays are treated horrid in bl’s to the point they are either made fun of and bullied or just not there at all. I have yet to see an actual hyper feminine/ feminine gay that has been the man love interest. And there is a difference from looking “softer and feminine” and having a feminine personality. Which most people don’t seem to register that. Even though yes a lot of bl stick with the trope of a manly man with a more softer male they still make sure to keep them from being too flamboyant. I hope that we will very soon see a major switch and get more wide range personalities and traits. And with that I hope they do not make it stereotypical and make the more feminine male the bottom and masculine male the top which is what is going on in a drama that is airing now which has probably the most feminine male that has ever been in a main couple of a Thai bl. Lemme tell you. You’d be surprised at how many gay relationships with a hyper feminine male and a more masculine guy where the feminine guy is the top and the masculine one is the bottom. Because at the end of the day we are not straight we don’t operate in the same way. And omg why does everyone act like being verse is not a thing……. Also why does it seem like everytime a guy is hyper feminine they automatically go by the pronouns of she/her and want to be a girl. I may be reaching but I feel like this is a clear statement that says if you are a hyper feminine man then you want to be a girl. I don’t know but I just hope that in the future it will be a huge shift on bl and get rid of this major horrid depiction of gay people and this encrusted homophobia that is very apparent.

I’ve been in the BL/Yaoi fandom for more than 12 years now, and I have to say, we have come far. I’m proud to see people don’t defend these kind of toxic traits as something sexy and erotic anymore. Basically according to these Asian dramas, if you're masculine you're supposed to be dominant and you can do whatever tf you like and not get your ass in jail. Even in straight dramas really popular ones too the female leads get forcefully kissed by the male leads and it isn't considered sexual assault but are rather glamorized and romanticized. In many eastern countries including mine non consensual sexual actions aren't considered sexual assault if the person "likes you" or whatever and this mindset is so messed up. Luckily we are seeing strong female leads in straight dramas with less non consensual stuff so I hope we have better written gay characters and storylines in future.

I would kinda want to talk about Cherry blossom after winter, he was never his brother. They stayed in the same house due to Haebom's parents demise. Well it's your perception. P.S- I'm glad that someone talked about all them redflags and toxic behaviour. To me, History 4 (the brothers relationship) was disgusting to the point I had to skip them and watch the other couple. About lovely writer series, it's a pretty toxic series filled with manipulation, the series started with pure manipulation and lies. The foundation of their relationship was manipulation and lies. I'm glad someone pointed it out. Still have no clue how people called that series healthy.

In the fish upon the sky, i really hated their stalking and toxic fangirling behaviour, i was seriously very disgusted while watching the drama. TharnType is so toxic in so many ways. It started with the first episode when Tharn abused Type in his sleep. He did it a lot even when Type said no a lot of times. Tharn actually manupulated Type to love him back. Even in the relationship they were toxic.

I think healthy relationship in drama does not exist(some do exist)cuz of fanservice while writing it is kept in mind that what fans wanted to see in these dramas and also i think every relationship will be not perfectly healthy so atleast i expect almost healthy relationship i think dramas like my love mix up,cherry magic,semantic error,lovely writer,bad buddy etc. but we need acknowledge red flags btw great video!!! Also Bad Buddy was a great series because it showed communication and pat and pran both communicated about the hubby and wifey thing and pat changed it to "boyfriend" instead

Damn...hats off to you for providing such detailed paragraphs to avoid any hate in all your videos! That being said, i really like your 4th point. One of the many reasons i want to watch (don't attack me with the whole "OMG U HAVENT WATCHED IT YET HOWWW" thing cause i just dont have a lot of time as an IB student but oh well) Semantic Error is because of the portayal of good female characters in a BL. Most gay relationships make the opposite gender the "enemy" and I don't like that. I would love to see a BL where the female bestie of the two love interests does everything in her power to get them together, and is like the therapist friend. Kinda like Bitna from Nevertheless, but in a BL. If anyone knows a BL with this kind of a female character, lemme know!! Great edit as always btw your edits are the best! Till now I have watched not me and theory of love for the offgun ship and in both of them there were cheating. In not me sean had someone whome he was in relationship with kind of but he cheated on her without even caring abit. All I can say is he never really loved her in the first place as he didn't felt guilty. Normally I don't comment on small things I disagree with in your videos because they are always so impressive and it feels like I'm nitpicking. However, I feel like in the case of Theory of love it really can't be called cheating. Khai quite literally got kissed by that girl without his consent. I know ToL isn't for everyone, but this is just victim blaming and we shouldn't do it.

Personally, I'm a big fan of We Best Love but the whole "I'm not gay, I only like you" really put me off?? It didn't even need to be included, I feel like it could have just been Zhou Shuyi realizing he was gay, or bisexual, or pansexual, etc. Characters had great chemistry but that's not how liking the same sex works???

I'm glad that even though I watched and even enjoyed some of these dramas I still could understand the problematic behaviors in these dramas

KinnPorsche is a mifia show so it will be all the red flags. One of the side "couples" relationship starts with the one being raped and tortured by the other. At least in the book. And I think there were going to do it in the first recording of the show before they had to start all over cause of behind the scene problems. Not sure if they will now.

things that NEED to change in bl dramas- 1. the top/bottom and husband/wife terms. heteronormative terms gives internalized homophobia. it's like- you can't enjoy a gay drama without adding "straight-ness" to it (i love how this issue was addressed in bad buddy) 2. FUJOSHIS. OMFG- i can't explain how annoying they are. it's literally creepy af and fetishization of anyone of anything is unacceptable. i hope someday there will be a drama where the other characters will diss the fujoshis and tell them to f off. especially in oxygen, the girl was extremely annoying and the doctor was even more annoying. he played with the other doctor's and the brother's feelings to impress the girl. absolutely trash couple, i am sorry to those who love them that's it, these are the things that bother me the most 💀

I think the newer shows are trying to get better. Like they are taking baby steps. Between Us has Win asking for Team's consent nearly all the time. Pat and Pran are green flags that talk about their feelings. They're trying. Hopefully, they will keep trying and not regress.

Like they are both guys no need for that, they don’t have to fit into some straight relationship narrative. I also hate when people in the shows ask about who is top and bottom or say that this guy is definitely a bottom because he acts a certain way. Like ew it’s none of your business, not to mention it’s disrespectful and weird. I also hate when groups of people ( usually female characters) are grouping together and acting like crazy fan’s using these real gay couples they know as some kind of entertainment. It’s uncomfortable when female characters ask these guys personal questions about their relationship or to help provide entertainment for them. As someone who is bi, I find the "I'm not gay, I just like you" trope to be particularly uncomfortable to see. It's almost as if BL writers wish to distance the character in question (who is usually characterized as the more masculine individual in the relationship) from homosexuality entirely, and in the process completely rule out the idea that they might be-- dare I say it-- _bisexual._ The black-and-white-ness of it all... falling back onto the term "straight" when you're still attracted to people of the opposite sex, not seeing your relationship as "gay" if your partner is a "WEAK, FEMININE BOTTOM" and you're a "STRONG, CAPABLE TOP", being LITERALLY HOMOPHOBIC in the way you treat your partner and other gay people... it's clownery, your honor. And it's not as if bisexuality is some obscure term-- if there are multiple gay characters with a gay community in a particular show, they 100% would know or at least _know of_ someone who was bisexual. The lack of nuance or diversity in many BLs' approach to sexuality and queer circles makes me want to run my head through a wall. My suspension of disbelief can only go so far, baby. That being said, if the character is simply in denial over their own identity, it's a different story. But if it's an excuse to heteronormify a couple? Make it less gay? Masculinize a character? Commit bi erasure? I'm pulling my goddamn hair out.
